Favorite Opeth album?
« on: March 27, 2019, 04:30:57 PM »
Personally I have to go with My Arms Your Hearse. I love the atmosphere of that album so much. Blackwater Park is a close second.
I dig all Opeth albums from Morningrise to Damnation, plus Watershed.

What you say?

For a long time it used to be My Arms, Your Hearse, but for the last 5 or so years it's been Ghost Reveries. And actually it isn't even close anymore. MAYH would be a distant second.

Watershed is my favorite with Pale Communion and Damnation right on its heels. Then Blackwater Park. Then everything else waaaay below Blackwater. And because this is DTF, I gotta include the following:

Orchid - meh
Morningrise - meh
My Arms, Your Hearse - MEH
Still Life - MEH
Blackwater Park - fantastic, excellent, wonderful
Deliverance - meh
Damnation - amazing
Ghost Reveries - I always forget this album even exists
Watershed - Opeth at its finest
Heritage - nope, do not like
Pale Communion - amazing
Sorceress - pretty good
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Wait, wait, wait........You like Blackwater Park, but not Still Life? Does not compute....Blackwater Park is basically a continuation of the style on Still Life.

Yeah but Blackwater's actually good. Still Life just has Serenity Painted Death. My Opeth opinions shouldn't really matter to hardcore Opeth fans though, because I couldn't even stand them other than Damnation until Watershed released  :lol

Heritage. It's got this distinct feel all its own that I really love. There's some great songwriting on there, some of Mikael's strongest lyrics, and some great emotional moments.

Watershed would be a close second place. I just think it dips a bit in quality on the Burden-Porcelain Heart section.

For me it's really hard to pick a favorite but I'll say Deliverance. Very close honorable mentions to My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life & Ghost Reveries.

Ghost Reveries is my favourite. Deliverance and Blackwater Park not far behind. I also seem to have the rare opinion of not really liking Still Life or My Arms, Your Hearse that much, but really quite liking the first 2 albums.

There are bits and pieces that are really good on the 3 most recent records, but I much prefer their older style.

Oh, this is hard! Still Life, Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries. Can't decide between them. Maybe Blackwater if you held a gun to my head.

The newer material starting with Heritage is best forgotten.

They have a consistently great catalogue, but nothing comes even close to Ghost Reveries.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Very tough to say because for me Opeth have 5 truly great albums (Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries and Watershed) and on any given day, any of one of them can be my favourite. But probably the one that I most often consider their best is Deliverance. It has 3 of my favourite Opeth songs (funnily enough, none of them are the much-praised title track).

But the run from Still Life to Watershed is such an incredible sequence of albums. Outside of Iron Maiden, I can't think of a metal band that has a better 6-album run. I'm not keen on their new direction but I respect that Mikael follows his instincts and goes down the roads he wants to go, regardless of whether he thinks the old fans will follow. Interested to see how he follows up Sorceress.

"Favorite" and "Opeth" do not belong in the same sentence.

What's your take on My Arms Your Hearse?

I like it but I think it's the 'transitional' album between their first 2 (not great) and their next 6 (great). I think that MAYH was a sound they would go on to perfect on their subsequent albums.

It's been an interesting vote so far because in the main Opeth thread on here, Blackwater Park is winning the 'favourite album' poll (as it tends to on metal forums), but here Ghost Reveries has almost twice as many votes.

I have only heard a few Opeth albums, so i'm probably not the best person to vote, but I went with Blackwater Park. The reason is simply that it's the first album that I listened to that made me see that heavy use of growls could actually be cool.

I like a lot of the favorites--especially BP and Ghost Reveries--but im going for Morningrise. A bit raw and sometimes rough around the edges, but theres a haunting beauty and organic texture to it that always brings me back.

Watershed takes the cake for me...there's something about that album's song order and production that feels so organic yet epic.
Ghost Reveries is not far behind (and the album that got me into the band).
Heritage, surprisingly, comes in first. That album really works for me, and every album since then has felt like a poor imitation.

Same.

The only bad Opeth album is Heritage (Yes, I actually really like Orchid). I never waver on my favorite, Blackwater always.

It's a close run thing between Still Life and Blackwater Park.

I think Still Life is more consistent but the highs of BWP are higher than those of Still Life.

My favorites are Blackwater Park, Still Life and Ghost Reveries.

All albums are awesome until Ghost Reveries, except Damnation, which is only good. From Watershed onwards the level began to drop a lot.

Orchid: idk haven't heard this one yet
Morningrise: Same
My Arms, Your Hearse: I really liked it when I first heard it, but I haven't listened to it again since then so
Still Life: Great, but this is newer to me and I still haven't listened to it too much
Blackwater Park: A masterpiece, easily my choice
Damnation: Good, I really like the vibe of this one.
Deliverance: Good, but not quite as good as Damnation.
Ghost Reveries: Great, but not as consistent as Blackwater Park.
Watershed: Good, but not quite as good as their best stuff.
Heritage: Good, I honestly don't mind the drastic style change here.
Pale Communion: Like Heritage, but slightly better
Sorceress: That's a nope for me, dawg
