I just saw the show in Munich two days ago. I had an excellent time even though the sound was not that great, especially during the first set.

I had already seen SFAM live 20 years ago but I actually enjoyed it more this time. Loved the first set as well since I love D/T.  :metal

Enjoy!

Aaaand I'm back! amazing show!  :hefdaddy

The first part had some lenghty songs so I didn't even realize that, in the end, they only played 6 songs. Ballsy move from them to fill it to the brink with new songs, and to find room for a bigass epic like A Nightmare to Remember (didn't expect it immediately second!). Also I was sure that Pale Blue Dot would have been the encore but instead it closed the first set.

All the songs went down well, but obviously SFAM was on a whole another level for intensity, energy and crowd response. I'm telling you things you all perfectly know if I mention the initial singalong to Regression, the massive singalong with the Metropolis reprise in the Overture, the wild excitement on the more energetic stuff like the fast section of SDV and Beyond this Life, and the boner every musician got during The Dance of Eternity  :lol
Just don't ask me what was happening during The Spirit Carries On, with all the singing along and the lights of the phones on and the "fountains" opened wide it was such an emotional and great moment that you had to be there to understand it. I'm sure you all experienced something similar at your show.

About SFAM' presentation and differences...
Things I liked: the new intro and the animations (Victoria is quite a babe, Julian had a pornstache and Edward seemed like a young teen but whatever, the animations were cool), the mini drum solo in Fatal Tragedy, and the tribute to fallen musicians during Through Her Eyes.
Things I can get along with: the ending of Through Her Eyes being all acoustic and not going electric like on the DVD.
Things that got me "WTF": the ending of Finally Free. The hell was that? I get that you can't always do the same thing and that Mangini can do wonders with the drums but some of the choices were baffling to say the least. Bring back the One Last Time reprise like on the DVD!

As for James... he was quite good. I'd say he was good in the first set, and great during SFAM. We all know what his tone, pronunciation and enunciation is like live. That's not going to change. But he was quite solid in the first set, and I never had a cringey moment, there was not a single instance where I thought "geez, James, what are you doing here? why are you struggling so much?"... not a single moment.
And during SFAM he was on fire!!! he seemed even better in tone and in power, and he was great on all the song, with his usual and untouched passion during the soft moments. He was even quite good as a frontman, for example he got the crowd going during the "Whoo oh oh oh, ho ho" part of Fall Into the Light, and got everyone to double clap during the "WHA WHA" part of Home's intro.

I'm sure that if you listen closely to a bootleg of the show you'll notice some failings here and there, but it doesn't matter - in the heat of the moment he sounded good, so he performed fine. As I said - good in the first set, great in the second. And the rest of the guys were their usual monsters of skill as usual.

After 20 years of seeing DT the worst thing that could happen would be walking away thinking "meh, they got sloppy" or "geez, James can't really hold it anymore". Luckily and gladly those thoughts were the farthest from my mind and I enjoyed the living hell out of it all!!!  :metal

Good to hear. I was blown away by how great SFAM stuff sounded on the DT12 tour so can’t wait for next Friday in London. Will be interesting to compare with what I saw 20 years ago. Will have to dig out my Metropolis 00 shirt like what MP is wearing on the dvd.

Interesting note: Since the beginning of the D/T tour Paralyzed and FITL have been played alternately (both in the US and Europe). However, at the last three concerts (Munich, Rome, Milan) FITL was played. It would be interesting to find out the reasons for this.

Maybe they wanted to be fair to the italian fans playing the same show. Or maybe they started to favor FITL over Paralyzed, since it's a bit longer so it stretches of a couple of minutes an already short first set, and it gives the occasion for a nice singalong in the middle.

Speaking of length, I must say that SFAM was the fasted 80 minutes of my life! the whole album flew by so fast! of course it's not a chore to listen to my favorite album, but before the show I was assuming that the length of the album would have showed, and that by the end I'd be "ok, that was great, but I'm really starting to feel tired", but on the contrary the whole thing flew by so fast and at the end of Finally Free I was pumped and energetic just as I was during Overture 1928!  :yarr

I definitely think James (wisely) saves most of it for the SFAM portion. He 100% for sure did that at the show I attended and I was fine with it because he slayed.

I do wish they would've done the Reprise (The Live Rehearsal Demo ending) at the end as well. It's a perfect way to end the song.

If I'm not mistaken, arent the shows on this tour a little shorter than a traditional evening with? I wonder why they dont just play both Paralyzed and FITL?

My show started at 20:30 sharp and when the show was over and they were waving goodbye and preparing for the final photo, it was 23:23. I joked with my friends "they totally had time to play You Not Me" (earlier in the evening we were discussing songs and only as an half joke I said that, after 20 years of seeing them and being blessed with hearing almost everything, I wouldn't mind that much to hear the song just for the novelty of it).

I would love to hear that song. Or even You Or Me.

20 years ago I ran a prog metal college radio show. I wanted to play You Not Me on my first show. My best buddy warned me that the prog community would not dig that.

I opened the show with Metropolis Pt.1 instead :)

Oh, a little funny triva. Do you know that, more or less, the general rule for photographers at concerts is "you can take photos during the first three songs"? well, a friend of mine was in the pit and told me they could take photos for the first 15 minutes, because "first three songs" with DT can easily mean 30 minutes or more  :lol

Saw them on Sunday in Wroclaw, PL. The show really exceeded my expectations. The 1st set was almost the same as at the festival in Warsaw last year (with Paralyzed instead of FITL), but we all know what everyone came to see.

JLB was really good. He had a shaky start and a bit of trouble with some high notes throughout the show, but overall was very, very solid!

SFAM was amazing. Seeing it in its entirety was really a dream come true. The whole experience was great.

MVP - JP. Man, I've seen them for the 9th time and I don't think he'd ever nailed the whole show the way he did now.  :hefdaddy

The "highlight" was MM missing the cue in TSCO and coming in mid-verse. Not sure what happened there (I'd love to find out), but it was hilarious :lol Half of the hall laughed their asses off. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaRviJuzfsc

I felt like Mike kinda lost the flow, was a bit unhappy about it and kept the rest of the show safe, especially the FF outro.

Anyways, great show!

In other news, got an email from the Apollo regarding Saturday night's show yesterday. My front row tickets are now third row. Frustrating but hey, still third row :)

That seems odd, any reason given?
Also, Mike just made a post saying that this year he's trying to finish his solo album and also make a new DT album! He mentions prep for the dvd shoot, what would they have to prep when they've been playing virtually the same set for this tour? I'm assuming it would be too optimistic to hope for an additional tune or two.

I'm hoping they pull a couple surprises out. Also, new DT in 2020 should mean a very early 2021 release date :metal
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

Somebody mentioned a video of Jordan playing TCOT a few weeks ago but I couldn't find it. I'm trying to figure out what might make sense for them to pull out, after FII there are no real 'extra' songs (aside from Raw Dog) so it's not like they can do an SFAM b-side.

Hmm, maybe he's entertained by us thinking they're going to do anything different when they're not or maybe he's entertained that he already knows they're playing Octavarium in reverse order as the encore.

Maybe they will start with Metropolist Pt 1 and then continue with SFAM.

I wouldn't mind DT playing Raw Dog. I'm probably one of the few that likes the song.

It's also been confirmed by a recent FB post by the band that both London shows (or both UK shows?) will be filmed for a DVD.

Random question about the show - at my show, James during the pause between Act I and Act II of SFAM reminded that Jordan Rudess had just joined the band, and got him to come out and say hi at his mic. Does he always do that or was it a slightly improvised moment?

yes, concerning DT (in any way you'd like, but I meant concerning the live shows that were recorded. Of course, I know I've been surprised all the time when I attended the Portnoy era tours I attended (so 2000-2004))

I was mildly surprised by the orchestra when I attended the SCORE show at RCMH.  I figured they would do something unusual, but I wasn't sure what.  That was fun.

But I wasn't really speaking DT-specific.

Camera position, apparently. I was front row and centre. My suspicion is people who paid filthy lucre for a M&G are still on the front row whereas I just got lucky. That's what the cynic in me says, anyway.

But hey, row C is still great although I might have been more annoyed if I was still a super-fan. Not as if being in row A was going to make the show sound any better
