I didn't make the fan meetup (3:00 p.m. start time 2 hours from home isn't very doable on a weekday), but from everything I saw and heard, she ran it like a champ and people were thrilled.  I grabbed dinner at the CA Pizza Kitchen just before the show and ran into some guys that had been there, and they were VERY complimentary.  And then I got to see her in action during the after show meet-up, and she was doing a great job with the fans she got to escort in.

As for the show, it was fantastic.  The band is really dialed in at this point.  I know some don't like them playing to a click track.  And I get the arguments for that.  But seeing this show for the second time now (I saw them in SF on the first leg), I like the consistency that we get.  And I talked to the band a bit about it, and here's the thing:  Most if not all of them really LIKE having the click to keep them synced up.

If I had to find one thing to be critical about, it's just that I wish they'd stop playing seated venues.  Thankfully, the first few rows (which included where I was) stood up for both sets once the band came out and started playing.  But most of the venue sat, even the few times when James and JP tried to get them to stand.

A comment on At Wit's End:  It's my favorite on d/t, and I was super happy when JP told me they would be adding it in for this leg.  But at the same time, I wasn't sure how well it would work in a live setting.  Sometimes, a song is great on an album, but fizzles out live.  And it's hard to tell from YouTube clips.  You just can't feel the energy and catch all the nuances as being there live.  Having seen it myself now, I can say it DEFINITELY works.  It was the highlight of the show for me.  One indicator of how well it worked is this:  After the lights came up, and people were filing out of the theater, people were still singing the "Don't leave me now" part all over the theater.  And same thing for the next 20 minutes or so for those of us waiting for the after show.  People kept spontaneously singing it.  I think it goes without saying that people liked it.  It was a really great moment.

More later...

I was just asking about the show because I knew she was excited for it.  I had no idea that she had some kind of official role with the band.  That's really cool!

I'm glad you enjoyed the show so much and especially At Wit's End.  I too had it in my head after the shows I saw.  I think it's really fantastic on the album and live maybe even better.  Or at least equally as good.

Lol! I dont' know how official I am  - just lucky that DT USA asked me to host a pre-show meet up in my town! I guess almost 4 years of being way too interested in a rock band has a reward!  :rollin.  One of the really fun parts was that the restaurant let me play music. I brought a speaker and of course played DT - how often do we get to hang with others in a party setting (aside from a concert) and everyone is rocking to DT! Great times!

I love all their music and the 1st set is wonderful. I would have other preferences from the new album, but really it doesn't matter because all of their music is good.  I have to say though, when In the Presence of Enemies 1 finishes, I really want to hear part 2.... Pale Blue Dot really is a great concert song!! John Petrucci told me when I asked him, - "When you are making a record, do you finish a certain song and go "shit!, that's the bomb, that's it!!" - he said,  "well, we try to do that with every song..., but ya Pale Blue Dot for this one."  I also asked him if he has to relearn every song for each tour or are there some that they have played so many times like Spirit, that he remembers. He said "No! and I get pretty angry and have to practice a lot." (paraphrase)

Seeing Scenes multiple times is no issue - that album just kicks butt. James sings it great every time and the songs are all just the Best.  (who could not Love Home live!!) And yes, At Wit's End does not disappoint!!

John Myung I asked about the "wheel" in S2N - it is the earth - the earth keeps spinning with all of it's crap and we kind of have to accept it and hop on. I had to lean in soo much to hear him (and I am taller than him - actually then all of them - they are short) so night have missed more of the nuances that he was sharing. He talked quite a bit.

Jordan came a shook my and my son's hand. We chatted and he moved along.

James is my fave!  :yarr He is so chatty and friendly.  I asked about the lyrics to Far From Heaven. I had read they were about a kids point of view to parents and how I related to that.  Then he told me he was misquoted and it was about a movie with that same name and a about husband and wife and he is a homosexual and is suffering. Then we talked a bit more.

I am going to London to see them.. I am hoping some here can help me with what area is good to stay in - near or not to the venue, and how is public transportation??   I have to make up for lost time seeing them as much as I can before it is done..... :'(

Thanks for the forum!

This cannot be stressed enough.

The first time I met the band, I was tempted to fold up Mangini and take him home with me.

My kids talked me down.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Ah that's really awesome! Also had to laugh at Petrucci practicing and getting angry, I'll make sure to mention it to my husband when he can't nail down a solo he recorded years ago  :lol

Except that James talked about Far from heaven being written from a kid's point of view:

It's not a surprise, though. Many lyricists want to mess with us by sharing different interpretations of their own words. Bruce Dickinson for example described Out of the shadows as being about giving birth but also being about waking up from a nightmare.

Cool show in Omaha last night and it was Jordan's birthday! Still wish they would have played S2N rather than NTR.

The show in Cincinnati last night was fantastic.  It looked pretty full, and, although it is a seated venue, the entire orchestra level stood for both sets.  I was near the front, on JM's side of the stage.  When JP came over at the end passing out picks, I pointed to my son, and JP made sure he got a pick to him.

I saw on reddit that it looks like there was some major medical issue with a kid in the lobby during the beginning of the show. Anyone know anything about it?
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I was there but didn’t see anything . The weather was so bad that I thought the show Might be cancelled . If there was a medical emergency , the weather would have slowed down prompt medical service severely .

Probably - that's probably the real reason he didn't say hi after the show ended; he just wasn't there. :)

Also heard that he's a huge fan of Haken. ;)

But back to the Kitchener show - it was great.  James had a cold and you could hear it in his voice when he was talking, but he pulled out a great set - on the whole.  The rest of the band was fantastic as usual.  Seemed like quite a few people traveled for the show and it was nice.  (The weather wasn't so nice though.)

Would it be too crazy to expect another change to the first set/encore for the SA dates next week? Btw,they also announced Japan dates for May 2020.

It's possible, especially since Bosk did comment that there was at least one other song that he knows they soundchecked (IIRC). Still, I wouldn't bank on it since this is their first (and probably only) time through SA on this tour. I'd expect any additional changes to the setlist will happen for the second European leg.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

On that note, I have been wondering about this for the 2nd show in London when they are filming.  I will be at that show.  :metal  Would they do a couple more from D/T to have options? That also would go along with Bosk's comment.

I would hope they do. If they add S2N and R137 and rotate them each night like the do with FITL and Paralyzed, we would have most of the album represented on the live recording. They could even fit Out of Reach too if they wanted to. Getting a good live version of Peruvian Skies (which they've played this year) wouldn't hurt either. The main issue here is that SFAM will be played in full for both nights and that limits the other options a lot, and IMO we don't really need another full album live release of Scenes.

I think to add S2N rotating with R137 (or Surrender to Reason) to the first set would be perfect in terms to add a bit more time and representativeness  to the show without dragging it.

Fun fact: After the first few tour dates of 2020, TSCO will be the 3rd most played DT song ever (after PMU and Metropolis), according to setlist.fm.

Currently:
1. Pull Me Under
2. Metropolis Pt. 1
3. Take the Time
4. Under a Glass Moon
5. Surrounded
6. The Spirit Carries On

TSCO needs to be played only 9 more times (which it will, and more) to get to spot 3. It'll also be the first non IAW song to make it to the top 5.
