Data center technician, IT work, essentially I work in a room with 5000 computers, building to it and maintaining it, almost all by myself. We have 6 data centers around the world and only 5 people in our team to do the work (well 4, I am counting my manager who works in the NYC office). Our company is growing big time, every team hired people, except ours yet we have to keep up with the growth of the company. It's wearing me down. But then again, days like today are great because it's a change freeze and friday so no one is really working since our hands are tied. But I've got so much stuff piled up to start executing next week that it's going to be super busy, and now the boss is floating the idea of sending me to Denver again next month.

Honestly feel like I could create a new youtube channel about my job and have it be so much more successful than my personal channel of concerts and video games, but not sure work would like me doing that, but data center nerds would love the shit we do here. And well, I wouldn't be able to film concerts if I didn't have this job, including concerts like the one I saw in the Netherlands a few weeks ago.

Just found out today is one of the network engineer's that I work closely with last day, and it's actually a shock. So he is French, but has been in the US as for awhile, his entire 5.5 year career here. He applied to have his job transferred to France to move home where his wife moved back to recently with their children. His job can be done remotely and it would allow with the time difference to have him online during hours when others wouldn't (just like we hired a network engineer for Singapore as well so they can work overnight for us). Well, they told him they won't approve it, on the day before he himself finally moves, so he is done here and resigned. I feel like this is because of our new work overlords and the transition period still after the buyout. Sucks. Now they are short a person too, which means it's going to be slow getting my own work done.

Also, my boss got promoted to Director. I'm actually happy about that, I feel like maybe that means with him moving up that there could be room to grow below him, but we will see. Anyway, I guess everyone in the office is going out to either celebrate my boss or say goodbye to the engineer, kind of awkward it seems to me but apparently bottles are opening over there now.

Sounds like he was moving one way or the other. Why should the company do anything different for an employee that is purposefully moving out of the area from which they could reasonably do their job?

Well they approved it earlier, but I guess something changed. It made sense business wise (from a technical operations stand point) and he had been working there and here for the last year (so it had nothing to do with reasonably doing their job). He said they sat on it for 3 weeks too before telling him. Not sure how he knows that. Just rubs off as new management putting their foot down on something. I don't know honestly and I'm sure there are reasons, just seems they could have done a better job instead of waiting for the last second.

BUT MY BIRTHDAY IS APRIL 29TH SO THEIRS THAT.

I swear I want to strangle the vendor responsible for one half (more like 2/3) of our cameras system here at work. We had a brief power outage on Wednesday and lost the feeds to 2 of our buildings (each building is on it's own server and we connect via the IP.) One of the buildings was back up and running on Thursday (An issue with Fios), but the other building wasn't even touched until Friday, and that involved them sending me over and fucking with shit again and again so they don't have to send a tech up here. Finally they were able to remotely get the building up an hour ago, but then 10 minutes later, we lose another (different) building. So I do what I do best and turn the server and router off and on again, and nothing. Send out an email and the response I got was "We'll look at it when we can." AND AS SOON AS I RESPONDED WE LOST THE BUILDING THAT WE JUST SPENT ALL THAT TIME GETTING BACK UP.

I know it's not entirely their fault, but I do blame them because they are the ones who pushed for this specific Chinese software, which is not user friendly whatsoever, and doesn't stay up. The other software we use is a tad older, but never goes down. Last time we had a major issue was years ago, and I don't even know if it was software related or a hardware issue.

I know how you feel, we use Dell for our servers and if shit is broken and something I'm struggling bad enough to actually have to call their support, they will dump everything and anything on me before sending a tech out here to fix it. I say I fix 99% of my Dell problems on my own, but every once in awhile when there's one that gets me stumped and I have to call, I pretty much just want to yell "YOU KNOW SOMETHING IS BROKEN SO... since we already know you have to send someone out here, how about you just do that so I can get on with my day and stop having me do stupid troubleshooting steps that we both know aren't going to resolve the issue"
