Room 137, S2N and Out of Reach.

It's my little microcosm under 15 minutes of what makes Dream Theater, Dream Theater.

The rest of the album friggin smokes tho

1. Barstool Warrior - As others have mentioned, so much emotion in this song. From the reveal of the title, I was not expecting much from this one. And I certainly wasn't expecting it to sound the way it does given the subject matter. I suppose I was expecting either a ballad, or maybe something a little more "metal". But it's Images & Words meets Scenes and it sounds fantastic. Great lyrics, chorus and melodies!

2. Pale Blue Dot - This one took a few listens, as it was initially a little underwhelming as the closer of the album. But I love that DT kinda subverted the typical tropes of their usual closer, not delivering something seemingly epic (even though it is in its own way). This track really embodies its subject matter, feeling dark and isolated while also delivering a sense of wonder and awe. I also absolutely love the opening rhythmic riffs. It's the kind of track that the name 'Dream Theater' conjures up in my head, and I love it for that.

3. S2N - If someone were to ask me what I'd want for the next DT album, I would say something "colorful." This track absolutely captures that, delivering something that would feel at home with LTE. It's fun and it's going to absolutely kill live (especially the keytar bit at the end).

4. At Wit's End (Honestly, you could swap this one and S2N, they're both so effing good.)
5. Room 137 (This one's short and weird, and I dig that. It doesn't overstay it's welcome and I think it'll be a fun to see live).
6. Fall Into The Light (DT doing Metallica, which I can't say I find terribly interesting. It's an okay track.)
7. Paralyzed (I dig the opening drum intro and main riff, but to me it's BMU, BMD without the catchy chorus.)
8. Untethered Angel (Really middle-of-the-road DT that we've heard plenty by now. This one does nothing for me.)
9. Out of Reach (For me, DT's ballads have been mostly misses. This one is very forgettable.)
10. Viper King (It's fun, but not my cup of tea. I can see why it was kept as a Bonus Track.)

1. At Wit's End.
A masterpiece. Colourful, beautiful and moving. And that outro! I even like the jam session ending. With time it will be a well acknowledged TOP10 DT song I'm sure.

2. Barstool Warrior.
I didn't like it much on the first few listens but now I love it. Such an emotional song with all the core DT elements in it. Not as good as At Wit's End but it will surely become a DT classic in no time. The first minute still seems a bit random for me, it would be even better without it imho.

3. Room 137
Love it since the first listen. A groovy, dark song with good lyrics and nice Beatles like vocals.

4. Pale Blue Dot
It needs a few more listens but pretty good.

Everything else is far less goof imho. S2N and FITL comes next btw, then UA. My least favorite track is Paralyzed atm but I like that as well.

It’s already changed since I voted. S2n and Rm 137 replacing PBD.  Probably will change again. AWE and Paralyzed have remained my top 2 though!  :metal

Pale Blue Dot
At Wit's End
Fall Into the Light

I just love the unison playing of MM and JP on Pale and Fall. Don't know what it is but those are highlights for me every time.

I should mention that I trimmed At Wit's End down to 8:20 when I ripped it for my iPod. That's a few seconds after the initial fade out. I didn't realize it went a whole minute more.

I'm still not sure I've given the album a chance to sink in as of yet, but after spending some time with it, my three favourite tracks appears to be:

- Barstool Warrior
- At Wit's End
- S2N

The biggest grower for me is Room 137.  I didn't like it at all after the first 3 or 4 listens, but I'm finding more and more substance in with with every listen.  Still trying to wrap my head around Pale Blue Dot, but I'm just not getting it.  I feel like I should, but it's just not coming together for me.  Viper King is a really fun track.

02: At Wit’s End
03: S2N

EDIT: Might as well rank the whole album.

04: Viper King
05: Barstool Warrior
06: Paralyzed
07: Untethered Angel
08: Fall Into the Light
09: Out of Reach
10: Room 137

3. Barstool Warrior
4. Room 137
5. S2N
6. Out of Reach
7. Viper King
8. Pale Blue Dot

Barstool Warrior
Fall Into The Light
Viper King

These are the most awesome songs to me at the moment, and a step in the right direction for their current writing style. I like all the songs on the new album, but AWE is still growing on me and might sneak into the top 3. Untethered Angel might be the most underrated song on the album besides Out of Reach, it is a well written pop-metal tune. To be honest, I've taken a break from the album so's not to over-listen, been going through the DT catalog since, so I don't have the album fully installed into my brain yet.

After having some more time to digest the album, this is a piece of cake now! Had to re-vote.

S2N, AWE, and PBD.

BW, FITL, and Paralyzed would be my next favorite 3.

Room 137, OOR, and UA are my least favs, though I enjoy UA a good bit more than the other 2.

VP is solid, but James' verses take it down a notch

Barstool Warrior
At Wit's End
S2N

Wish there was a way to rank them on a point system (Example 1st =10 points 2nd =7 points 3rd =5 points)

Right now a vote for 3rd place is the same as a vote for 1st place in the poll

Not at all surprised AWE and BW are #1 and 2. Very surprised S2N is #3, and not by a slim margin.

BW has moved up past PBD and Paralyzed.

So:
AWE

Paralyzed

Yea, BW and PBD are close for me, BW might be a better overall song though, PBG just has that awesome intro that sucks me in.  It's tough between those two for my #3.

The album's only been out a month, and I need to sub out all three of my votes!

I originally went with Untethered, Barstool and At Wit's End. I'm now 100% behind Room 137, S2N and Viper King. What a great album!

I'd say Room 137 is the one better suited to be a grower. It's quite WTF at the beginning but then it wins you over with its crunchy riff and weird atmosphere.

PBD for the instrumental sections and some of the chord progressions in the choruses and OOR for the overall arrangement and above all MM's drumming in both of them. (although IMHO he could have played more notes and have been a lot more technical) The pathos aspect is something I never understood with DT (but not just them, music in general, but that's off-topic. Sorry about that.) If I had been into pathos in music, I would have added Barstool as the third option. Cool piece apart from that.

So far it's still looking like:

1. At Wit's End - not much to say that everyone hasn't already. Pretty good track, has all the great elements of a good DT epic but more concise. Lyrics are pretty compelling and has some cool vocal performances.

2. Barstool Warrior - reminds me of some tracks off of 6DOIT in a good way. Great guitar solos and a beautiful piano section to boot.

3. Fall Into the Light - maybe not the most popular choice, but I really found myself coming back to this one a lot more. Very moving instrumental section, love how it focuses more on emotion and atmosphere than having a wacky keyboard solo
