King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard

I'm surprised this band doesn't have a thread on here so I figured I'd make one. If you don't know who these guys are, they're one of the most interesting rock bands to get (at least kinda) popular in the past decade. They've been around since 2010 but to my knowledge they only really "caught on" in the past few years. They're also extremely prolific - they have thirteen studio albums so far and five of those were released just last year.

Their sound could be described as a mix of psychedelic, progressive, and garage rock. If any of that sounds up your alley I'd definitely recommend checking them out. Start with their 2016 album Nonagon Infinity, which is an album of nine tracks that seamlessly flow into each other (with the last one flowing into the first) that can be played on loop infinitely.

Here's my favorite track off of that album, Robot Stop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p_Si21ig7c

They're pretty damn awesome, very energetic and eclectic. I stumbled upon their live show at a festival two years ago and had my mind thoroughly blown! I then went and bought all the albums they had for sale afterwards. Easily one of the most refreshing bands I've discovered in recent years. Polygondwanaland is probably my favourite release by them, but every album has loads of good stuff to them. This here is 'Crumbling Castle', the epic opening track from said album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo8yyri9lpE
Human by Nature (prog-infused psychedelic metal): https://linktr.ee/hbnearth
Our debut album "Eläimys" is a trip I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone into Pain of Salvation, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Magma etc.

Awesome band. Got into them in late 2017 and I did one of those "start with first album and work through discography" journeys and definitely worth it. Can't wait to see where they go next but they keep delivering really solid albums. Their worst I would say is Eyes Like the Sky mostly cause I'm not 100% into the "western audio book" thing, but even that album i'd give a 6.5 or so because the music is fun. Nonagon Infinity is their best IMO, that album is just so well crafted and every song is really good. Then I would probably add I'm In Your Mind Fuzz and Float Along - Fill Your Lungs to round out my top 3. Polygondwanaland was also really good.

quantity over quality?

Polygondwanaland is pretty sweet though. It has a cool Crimson vibe to it.

also "Rattlesnake" is catchy as hell.

also they did a "What's in My Bag?" at Amoeba a few years ago which was cool. Some Yes in there

It can seem like it on the surface but I wouldn't say so. 5 albums in a year may seem excessive but I think in the end all of them were good or great. Someone might argue what if they focused their writing into one album - maybe it would have been 10/10, but out of those 5 albums I would still argue that Polygondwanaland was a really good album and the other 4 were pretty good too.

There's plenty of bands who put out 1 album ever 3 or 4 years and those albums aren't necessarily better than what King Gizz put out.

Ah. Two of my major haunts of the Internet come together on this thread: DTF and Canadian comedians/streamers LoadingReadyRun, through whom I was first made aware of King Gizz and his Liz Wiz. I've heard bits of King Giz through them, but not really enough to make me explore further.

that is true about the time gap, there are other instances where there is a long time gap and eventually the result comes out likely a lot better had they not.

The band who I would compare in some ways to King Gizzard, at least initially was Pepe Deluxe who are notably perfectionists and their last album which they spent 5 years+ on, Queen of the Wave is a stone cold classic record. The amount of time they spent waiting to borrow/access the vintage instruments I think made all the difference. And that was in 2012, so they have spent even more time on their newest record (again waiting to access the vintage instruments), and I expect it to be all the better because of the wait.

But I do agree Polygondwanaland is really great. Crumbling Castles is EPIC.
The other records I have heard from them are hit and miss. Although part of that might be just myself warming up to their sound and the vocal style.

But I also wonder if due to their varied styles, the style of Polygondwanaland may only come up once every few records.

Their new album came out today and it's full-on thrash metal. Can't fault these guys for lack of variety!

Wouldn’t say that it’s full on thrash, but it’s definitely one of the themes on the album. I played it today, really good, though maybe not as great as Fishies. Superbug is a fucking killer song, stoner/ almost doom metal!

Yeah, what I should have said is that they GO full-on thrash metal for a lot of the album. Superbug and Mars For The Rich were definitely less thrash-y.

I haven't listened to much of their earliest stuff; the first album of theirs I particularly like is I'm In Your Mind Fuzz. If you want to go chronologically you might want to start there, or with Nonagon Infinity.

What songs have you heard by them so far?

Just a couple of the new ones. Catching smoke and Interior People. Obviously, it was very different without being very rock, but the fact that they have a reputation of exploring different genres and seeing that they can write a quality song has me interested enough to explore more.

This is true! If you want to experience their variety, here's some albums for different styles... bolded ones are my favorites.

Heavy Psych / Garage Rock: Nonagon Infinity, I'm In Your Mind Fuzz, Murder Of The Universe
Prog: Polygondwanaland
Thrash Metal: Infest The Rats' Nest
Microtonal Rock: Microtonal Flying Banana, K.G., L.W.
More laid-back, atmospheric Psychedelic Rock: Butterfly 3000, Quarters!
Boogie-Woogie Rock: Fishing For Fishies
Acoustic / Folk: Paper Mache Dream Balloon

Their "Live In San Fransisco '16" album is also fantastic if you like live albums.

For a band that's put out so much music, in such a short period of time, their hit rate is pretty great. My favourites are:

Nonagon Infinity
Flying Microtonal Banana
I'm in Your Mind Fuzz
Infest the Rats Nest
Polygondwanaland
Oddments
Quarters

This is in order but it's quite interchangeable. I'd say I really love the middle era of their career. Some of the early albums are fine, but I can't say I'm overly in love with anything from their last three albums. Definitely a band worth delving into though.

Nonagon Infinity is their best IMO. Might appeal to your prog tastes too since its designed to be spun in 1 go with songs going into each other. :)

I went to the CD shop today. They had multiple copies of KG and LW, but I’ve heard other bands experiment with microtonal, and I’m not sure that’s where I wanted to start. The only other studio album they had was Fishing for Fishies, and I was tempted…but then I saw Live in San Francisco and decided to grab that.

Give me a few days to spin it and I will get back to this thread after I’ve processed it

Infest The Rats' Nest is my favorite; I'm not even that big into thrash but that's just a killer metal album from start to finish.

Nonagon Infinity and I'm In Your Mind Fuzz are my other two favorites. I would enjoy Nonagon Infinity more if the production weren't so muddy, though.

I'm cautiously excited to check out the new one. They put out a lot of good stuff but they haven't put out a great one since Polygondwanaland IMO. Across the last 4-5 releases you could pick maybe the best 2 songs from each and make a great album, but overall I'd say there's just a decent amount of filler there. They're more a quantity over quality band though so that's just the nature of the beast imo.

I really wish I liked Polygondwanaland more. Crumbling Castle is one of their best songs ever (and easily their best 10+ minute song IMO), but the rest is just so sleepy and boring. :-\

That's kinda how I feel about most of their post Polygondwanaland stuff tbh.  :lol

Gumboot Soup was okay - some alright songs but it sounded like a collection of b-sides which was what it was. Fishing for Fishes was also fun/enjoyable but ultimately not very memorable. Infest the Rats Nest I find to be massively overhyped - I'd say it's a bottom half album of theirs, it's not a bad album but as a thrash metal album it's so much weaker than so many other albums out there. KG and LW both felt fairly underwhelming imo (maybe if you took the best of both and made one album it would have been more memorable). Butterfly 3000 was alright and the most previous Made in Timeland was maybe their weakest release so far of their career.

These releases aren't even that bad but they're kinda pumping out these 7/10 albums (which is fine) which kinda lowers your expectations/hopes because it feels like if they were a bit more selective and polished these off a bit more they might be better. Their '5 albums in 2017' experiment is maybe the ultimate proof of that IMO, you could almost erase Murder of the Universe, Sketches of Brunswick East and Gumboot Soup from existence and you wouldn't really miss out on much IMO.

I've been getting more and more into the band since Nanogon Infinity. "Crumbling Castle" was the first track I heard that REALLY made me pay more attention to them and I have to agree with a previous poster here that the rest of that album just doesn't compare.

K.G. and L.W. are my favorites though, I thought they were amazing on those albums. Checked out Omnium Gatherum but so far I'm kind of lost on it. Needs more listens.

I'm liking this newest record of theirs, but I can't help but get frustrated with their love of garage-style production. It's always seemed intentional, but i often think how much better sonically the music they make could sound if the production sounded more profesional.

I think their production has been fine post-Nonagon Infinity. That album and some of their earliest ones are the only ones that actually feel poorly-mixed rather than just having a raw aesthetic.

I love how Infest The Rats' Nest sounds. The nastiness of the guitar and bass tones really adds a lot.

The lo-fi aesthetic is something that I had to get used to, but it fits the music really well. Nanogon Infinity still sounded quite lo-fi and flat, but their albums since then have varying degrees of hi-fi elements. Especially 'Fishing For Fishies' sounds really full and crisp for a King Gizzard album.

I can't stop listening to this new record. I really love The Dripping Tap now, and even though the record feels a little long at times I still keep spinning the whole damn thing.

This is the first album of theirs that's really hit me this way. Watching videos like this only get me more into it...

It is really great to hear them back to form after a couple of disappointing albums. I really hope The Dripping Tap is a stepping stone to more of that jam style because it's their strongest song in quite some time for me. While I do like most of their albums I've always felt a sense of them having the potential to be something better than they are, when you get these songs like The Dripping Tap or Head On/Pill it actually feels like them ascending to a higher plane.
