Finding stock image is ridiculously easy because there exists search engines that literally specialises in that sort of thing, like TinEye. Put in an image in there, and you'll find other places it's been used. So people know DT uses stock images, and they put it in the search engine and finds other results  containing the pieces :P It's been happening since Octavarium :P

Why not work with someone else?

Now everybody has to search out if it was something similar.
Sure but they've kind of brought it on themselves. It doesn't stop me thinking the artwork (both for the album and the single) looks great, but I do find it funny how quickly and easily people can find the stock images Syme uses. And it's still all irrelevant to the question of whether the music is good.

It's a shame if it ruins the joy of a new release for you, but for me it makes no difference and if anything I find it fairly entertaining.

I honestly could care less.  Get me the music.

Got to say, you are all ruining the joy

First day on the Internet, sir?

Humanity is killing me. :lol

Got to say, you are all ruining the joy of a new release.  I saw the picture and though is was so cool.  Now everybody has to search out if it was something similar.

I could give a rat's ass about that.  It looks great.

Stuff like singles and album release day is like Christmas.  People should not ruin Christmas for Little Timmy.

Absolutely.

Because they don't want to, and they like Syme's work.

this is a guess on my part.  John loves Rush, he's modeled the live show like Rush would with the visuals so they need a more structured setlist and he likes Syme's work.

I don't really get the complaining.  I mean, I get that some people don't like that art form (using combination and manipulation of stock images to create a final work).  But I don't understand the voicing of the same criticism over and over as if this is a new thing.  It's like someone acting surprised because this album features guitars and vocals, and complaining that DT once again used the tired trope of having guitars and vocals on an album.  It's what they do.  And they like working with Syme, which is why they have for almost every album since Octavarium.  It's what they do.

I guess, for me, it's like, if Dream Theater were to release an album of mashups, I'd be disappointed. Same thing with the artwork. There's so much talent out there for DT to tap into.

For me it's kind of fun to look for the stock images and see how it all came together.  I save all the stock images in the same folder with the rest of the artwork.

I'm with kingshmegland here.. They are a band, and make music, let's not get confused..

Can we discuss about the artwork?.. Sure.. And have different opinions about it?.. Absolutely.. But it seems very silly to complain this much about the cover of a SINGLE..

Don't understand complaints about the concept of using stock images. Is the artwork good? That is really what matters and I don't see why it has to be original set pieces to be good.

 Of course my first comment was how much I liked the artwork.   :lol

Same here.
For the people saying they don't understand the complaints; I honestly can't comprehend how this is okay or justifiable, isn't the art work an integral part of the overall statement and vibe of the album? and further on the album's legacy? Shouldn't it be solely identifiable solely to that album?
That guy is an artist as much as a DJ is an artist, I can't believe he's getting paid to do this.. How many people here CAN'T do this?
I suspect DT themselves are not aware at all of this, cause I really doubt they know and just don't care like that. A shit ton of their fans could have done an original job, hell they could have commissioned fuckin blob and he would came up with something original and more attached to the music of the album.
That's all I'm gonna say about that, I haven't spoken out about it before but my fuse just burnt out with this one.
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

I guess this is another case where I do like the album art, but am a little let down by the fact it's just another reworked image from the internet and not an original piece of art all around.  I do like all the art I've seen, but just knowing how easy it was and how common it is used is kind of a let down.  I would love for the music which is so artistic and original to have the images associated with it also be artistic and original.  There's just so much missed potential especially because I really dig the ideas behind these artworks.

The DJ comparison is apt. Is a DJ making a beat for a rapper not an artist? Artists like Daft Punk or Prodigy use a lot of samples of famous tracks in their stuff and create cool songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZYLp5uX9Yw

It's a tool in a toolbox, and a very valid one at that. Using stock image is no worse than using samples in songs - heck. "HOLD IT NOW; WAIT A MINUTE; COME ON!"
There will be a reckoning.

Very true and good point, but I also when hearing samples in other music kind of find it a bit unoriginal even if used in an original way.

Completely agree with this. It's the artwork for a single, really no one will even remember it after a couple weeks. We're here for the music.
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

And I have no idea why you would think that band don't know that Syme uses stock images.

Cause I'd like to believe they care about being original.
Is originality not a factor here at all? Is it no longer part of the package of what makes something great? I'm truly asking cause I don't understand y'all's argument for this, to me the argument is "Ah who gives a fuck where it came from, it looks good and that's all that matters", am I understanding this right?
I haven't said a word about the unicyclist or the robot with the skull, somehow this pushed me over the top.

Again, they work with him because they like his work.  It's that simple.  If you don't like it, you're entitled to that, but I don't know what more can be said.

First thing I said about this was I like it, until I found out it's another reworked stock image. But if I understand your point correctly, that is it doesn't matter, then you're 100% right about there being nothing else to be said.
Maybe I just need to get with the times, that's how things work now.
