Haken Survivor Main Thread

With the Visions survivor finished, we continue with the album that saw a change in Haken's sound, merging their modern progressive metal sound with the more classic progressive rock. It's also the album that greatly boosted Haken's popularity and is the album that I most often see topping people's favourite Haken albums lists. I remember being at the very first show where songs like Atlas Stone, Cockroach King and Pareidolia were played (if setlist.fm is to be believe) and I remember there only being about 30 people in the audience that night. How different that was from today, when Cockroach King is their most played live song, a fan favourite even, that people sing along to word for word. Although The Mountain doesn't contain an 'epic', you could say it's their most well-rounded album, containing the heavy stuff, the technical stuff, some experimental stuff, the melodic stuff and some beautiful ballads as well.

With the both the Aquarius & Visions survivors yielding some unexpected results this year, let's see what happens to The Mountain this time around.

I think I always get hate for this one, but Somebody never did anything for me. All the short tracks on this album are also amazing so Somebody really is the only thing I don't like about this otherwise near-perfect album.

The Cockroach King divide should be fun.

I went with The Path. It's a great song, but nothing I would listen to on its own.

I think I always get hate for this one, but Somebody never did anything for me. All the short tracks on this album are also amazing so Somebody really is the only thing I don't like about this otherwise near-perfect album.

you won't get any hate from me. In fact, it's probably the easiest decision of ranking this album. Everything is very even and then Somebody comes and almost ruins it as the final song. It's one of the few songs in Haken's discography that I really don't like.

Progressive rock giants EHCHANT announce their new studio album, THE COCKROACH KING DIVIDE, to be released in 2019.

What the hell with the Somebody hate though, it's a fantastic song.

As for this album, Because It's There. Easy first choice.

Probably my least favorite Haken album, most likely due to the lack of any GOD-TIER tracks (every other album has at least one imo) but still a lot of very good tracks on this album, and great flow overall.

I feel the same way.   The Path will probably be next, but it starts the album so brilliantly and the repeat on Because It's There really takes it to the next level.   

Somebody and As Death Embraces are a couple of 8s in a sea of 10s.    So I might even go with ADE before The Path....but we'll see how I feel.    But for now, Somebody is the clear first vote for me.
