I love Tigran, but StandArt isn't quite doing it for me. It's nice and the playing is superb of course, just not a style I find hugely exciting.

I'd have to hear it again, but I think it probably has fewer prog influences than his earlier albums, so that might explain it.

It's not the prog so much as the jazz-fusion and influences of his Armenian background that make his usual stuff so rich. Whereas the latest is his take on American jazz standards which is fine, but less my thing.

So I've got the following for today  :corn

Mikael Åkerfeldt - Clark (Soundtrack from the Netflix Series), this actually came out yesterday and a lot of it could fit straight on an Opeth album.

Ibaraki - Rashomon (Black metal side project of Trivium's Matt Heafy, featuring Ihsahn and Gerrard Way)

Kikagaku Moyo - Kumoyo Island

Ufomammut - Fenice

Anything else of note today?

Pure Reason Revolution - Above Cirrus
One listen and it's brilliant. Doesn't rehash The Dark Third but definitely closest in style and quality to that album out of anything else they've done, some amazing stuff on here.

Halestorm - Back From the Dead
A lot of fun. Very simplistic - every song is 3-4 minutes and identical in structure (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge/solo, quiet bit, final chorus). But it's rocking and has a ton of great hooks.

Cool.  Will check out both.  Halestorm usually doesn't do much for me, but if there's a lot of catchy hooks, I'll listen with an open mind.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Cage Fight - Side project from one of Tesseract's guitarist (James). Heavy AF with some growls/screamo vocals. The guitar tone and riffs are insane. A bit turned off by the vocal though.

What we got today? I'll be checking out the following:

Astronoid - Radiant Bloom
Kreator - Hate Über Alles (although it's not on Spotify, even though it should be released today)
GWAR - The New Dark Ages

Anything else?

Yea it's definitely hitting the spot more than the last. Not sure if it'll top Air for me though, that album is something else.

I've been too busy with some other listening projects to get to much of anything new in the last few weeks, but I'm definitely curious about Frou Frou, Angel Olsen, and Astronoid.  There's also Red Handed Denial, Origin, Tedeschi Trucks, Battlelore, Andrew Bird, Artificial Brain, Purity Ring, Tremonti, I Built the Sky, The Algorithm, and Temple of Void, so it's one of the bigger weeks so far this year.

Edit:  the new Red Handed Denial is pretty awesome.  They really oughta be huge.  They're not too far from Periphery in their overall sound, but less wanky, catchier, and much more palatable vocally, at least for me.  Lauren's harsh vocals seem to have even gone up a level on this one.  Here's a sample.

Might need to spin Air again because both of the last albums have been nothing sort of masterpieces. I just couldn't get  into Air.

The new album by The Tangent, titled Songs From The Hard Shoulder, has released today! I haven't listened to it yet, but I've also avoided all pre-release singles and material, so I'm going in fresh!

Some releases that I'll be checking out:

Deathwhite - Grey Everlasting (excited about this one, given how much I enjoyed their previous records. So far, it sounds ok, but it's not grabbing me as much as I'd like. Might be a grower)

Kardashev - Liminal Rite
Billy Howerdel - What Normal Was
Kreator - Hate Uber Alles
Seventh Wonder - The Testament

Haven't checked out Deathwhite, but I was never overly impressed with their other albums.

Just finished up listening to new Kardashev. I know I've checked out this band before but this was heavier than what I was expecting. It was really good on first impressions. Onto Kreator now...it's fucking KREATOR!
