Pretty sure Sacul is set K

And I don't know why I didn't think to send a Butthole Surfers song.... :censored That has to be Indiscipline, btw

EDIT: No wait, that has to be Stadler. Indiscipline is set H, I think...... :corn

Yep, 3 seemingly unrelated songs (except they are all from 2004), yet I made them in to an EP with a story (admittedly a very cheesy story).

All correct!

This is a good round. Hard to say what I think beyond that right now but may have results by Friday, Saturday at the latest, I promise.

Joe Bouchard lives around me here somewhere and often does little gigs in local bars (I'm talking places that put less than 100 people).   I've never seen him, but I'd go if circumstances allow.  If you go to his gig page, one of the dates is at a bar that was literally a mile from my house (and open late; I'd go there for a nightcap when I got the "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!" message.)

Have to go out right now to get a new keyboard because my dumb ass spilled a sugary drink on it last night and the roads are crap so I hope I don't die but results will be up tonight hell or high water

Also this could fight round 3 for strongest round yet. Let's just say I'm struggling with almost being TOO generous on scores.

So, since most of you took the theme challenges, a reminder: any song that gets over a 9 gets a bonus point. And I have to say I'm blown away by the songs sent this round, which is partially why it took so long for me to get these writeups done, I actually felt I was being too generous with the scores. But this could somehow be stronger than round 3. I *loved* listening to these songs and added a bunch of these to my favorites playlist.

Going to release these in short spurts since I'm still finishing them, in hangman order because I'm too lazy to switch these up. :) I will post the map with updated spots when all results have been posted.

*   *   *

After a week on the road, the party has begun talking to each other less and less. The roads, empty and cold beneath a tumultuous yet silent, black sky, are already taking their toll on the weary travelers' feet. Some have begun contemplating eating their shoes, for the vegetation has begun to rot from an evil miasma spreading throughout the land.

TAC from TACsylvania, Owl Screech the Kenku Assassin, Evrys the Talespinner, and Nekov, the annoying wizard from the South, decide to take off in the middle of the night, feeling uneasy about their current location. They leave their companions behind and begin to move, unaware that the road will fork soon ahead, and unsure if the group will splinter once more.

TAC

1. Sinbreed - Creation of Reality 9.4

This song sounds like the best Deris-era Helloween, complete with a massive chorus. Just the right kind of classic speedy power metal for me. I have no complaints about this song, it's just my kind of metal.

2. Divine Weep - Tears of the Ages 8.6

The band name is bad, but the song is not. It doesn't quite hook me like Sinbreed, but it's a balls-out heavy metal tune which is cool. The vocalist goes a bit too wild sometimes for my taste though.

3. Innerwish - Rain of a Thousand Years 9.0

This is more like it. While I feel like I've heard the verse a thousand times, it's still fun, and the chorus has the kind of melodic phrasing that I enjoy out of power metal. It has a break in the middle that risks halting all the momentum of the song but it doesn't and that's good. Great use of choirs on this one. Big choruses are one of my favorite things about metal. This one is huge.

Current Score: 25.23 [+2 BP]
Round 4 Score: 27.00 [+2 BP]
Average: 9.00
Movement: 9 spaces
NEW CURRENT SCORE: 34.23 [+4 BP]

Puppies_On_Acid

1. Magnitude 9 - Lies Within the Truth 8.6

This gives me a Queensryche vibe, like it's on the border of both rock and metal. It has groove and harmony and all kinds of tasty musical stuff but big guitars and drums and shreddy but musical solos (which I am very big on as opposed to mindless shred). This is a really good jam. Never heard of these guys before but I want to check this album out.

2. Mastodon - Hearts Alive 8.2

I didn't realize this was almost 14 minutes until it ended. Holy cow. First two minutes - brilliant, love the creepy chords they choose to riff on, and the tension that results from them holding on an extra bar or two before repeating or moving on. Next section - nice riffing. Vocals come in - oh no. I don't like this guy much. The only other Mastodon song I know is Sleeping Giants and he does a decent job there, but I can't get into his voice and all the screaming and growling. It says something that I was entertained enough to never check the time on this song because the instrumental side is so strong and I love what I'm hearing, but the vocalist drags it down for me. Special shout out to the drummer who is a blast to listen to during the whole song. This was cool because I had no idea Mastodon had any 'epic' songs.

3. Marillion - Neverland 9.8

I perhaps should have banned Marillion after my first roulette, but they have so much material with various musicians that I can't help but allow more. Steve Hogarth, is it? I really, really like his voice. The singer on early Marillion is good but sometimes gets a bit too theatrical, whereas Hogarth sounds more emotional. Anyway, this is a great song. Lovely chord progressions and restrained instrumentation deliver some measured emotional beauty. And what touching lyrics - I'm guessing this about someone being driven on by the love he's receiving from another, but I'm not sure why the Peter Pan references are here. However Ilove the "But when you're gone, I never land in Neverland" lyric. And once the song begins to echo the vocals with that silky guitar and the synths and bass comes out... Man, I just love everything about this. Extraordinary song that only loses .2 points for the chimes going on too long at the end.

Current Score: 26.53 [+3 BP]
Round 4 Score: 26.60 [+1 BP]
Average: 8.67~
Movement: 9 spaces
NEW CURRENT SCORE: 35.20 [+4 BP]

Nekov

1. Vasudeva - Thought Pool 9.8

I'm so happy you sent this song. It's like the lovechild of a couple different Maybeshewill songs I like, a couple Joy Formidable tunes, and some Kings of Leon guitar style sprinkled on top. Not sure where you found this but this is just an utter delight to listen to, I just wish the ending wasn't so abrupt and clearly connected to another song, otherwise it's flawless. I had this playing when a friend came over the other night and he also loved it.

2. Kiev - Ariah Being 9.6

I am so impressed with how chill the song is as a whole, but how it seamlessly goes through a couple jazzy breaks before coming back home. Very easy to vibe to this song. Great tempo for relaxing without worrying about too much distortion - the little guitar break is jazzy too but not overwhelming and doesn't kill the mood, thankfully. This song really grabs my attention and I hope they have a lot more songs like this.

3. Kiev - Tube Orms 9.1

I don't find this as arresting as Ariah Being, but it's still awesome. The tempo again is perfect and I love the upbeat drums keeping the song moving while the bass is free to lay down meaty grooves. Going to save this album for future listening because I'm impressed. It might not look like I have much to say about these songs, but because they stick to their groove and don't change it up too much, there's not much more to say. These are just groovy, dark tunes with a vibe that I really enjoy.

Arion - Shadows 9.0

Is this considered power metal? I have no damn clue what is going on with that genre anymore, but I bet it is. That singer sells the shit out of the transition as the rest of the band comes in, that's how it's done. The synth solo is so rad it made me smile. This sounds fresh and unique.

Flaming Row - Burning Sky 8.5

I feel like I've heard these singers before. One early on especially sounds like one of the vocalists on Ayreon's 01101001, it's a high raspy and very powerful voice. And I think that voice lends an Ayreon-like quality to the backing choirs. Good tune, nothing I dislike here, but that singer is the main attraction for me.

Lunatic Soul - Gutter 9.6

This is a strong complement to the other two songs here and once again the kind of music I'm so attracted to. Dark, mysterious, kind of cold and funky. The best part is that despite its length is remains interesting. Rhythm section keeps it pushing along and the singer is just right for the music. I really do love this.

Well, good enough I guess, save for the fact I'm still gonna be at 9th place or even at 10th if Sacul scores better than me.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch... plus, next round is only the halfway mark. Plenty of time left. :)

Sir Jethro of Avalon, Alithia the Righteous, Rich the Poor Elite, and Scipline the Indy wake not long after their first group had departed, noticing the absence of their comrades. Rich, still damp from falling into the river earlier that day, caught up just in time to sleep by their fire. Wanting to catch up to their allies, the bards quickly grabbed their belongings and made haste - dousing the fire and forgetfully leaving behind their other three friends.

Stadler

Skunkworks - Space Race 9.0

Stadler, you trickster. It wasn't until I researched the song for this writeup that I realized this probably isn't a different band, but another song from Bruce Dickinson's solo band. I would have probably banned it otherwise, but this is a very fun song, not normally the kind of song I associate with Bruce, but it's just nice to hear him somewhere outside of Maiden.

Deep Purple - Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming 8.5

Certainly not a song I'd expect from Deep Purple. I think I had most fun on the first listen, but on repeats, the quick vocal parts got a little irritating, and I found them conflicting with what seems to be the sad message of the song, about being away from someone you love (I think). Sometimes I think that can work but in this case it's too jaunty for me. Great guitar work though, it's a nice rocker otherwise. To use a phrase you've used before, this is a victim of its competition, because there has been a lot of really strong stuff in this round, and this just falls a little short of those highs.

Butthole Surfers - Pepper 6.0

Unfortunately, my man, this one is a big miss. It sounds exactly like Loser by Beck, which is one of the few songs I just can't stand at all. I kinda like the instrumental side of this, but the vocals, man... Beck 2.0. They're not so bad in the chorus, though. I just feel kinda grimy after playing this.

Soul Secret - Behind the Curtain 9.8

A bullseye on the dart board that is my musical taste. The tones on these instruments are gorgeous. I'm a massive fan of the key they're playing in here, too. Enchanting is the word to describe this. Each instrument is wonderfully complemented by the rest of the band. The solo breaks are a work of art, I am super impressed at how many elements of prog/power metal I love are in this song. In a lot of ways it makes me think of the first time I heard early Dream Theater. I think the singer matches the band perfectly. This song is extraordinarily good.

Lost In Thought - Blood Red Diamond 9.2

High vocals, punchy riffs, a bright piano line and catchy hook. That's what I like. I like the heavier breakdown that doesn't sacrifice the tempo of the song (not always a fan of cutting the tempo in half at these points). Piano is my favorite instrument and I just love what it adds to this track - it's upbeat, it's heavy, but it's light at the same time and has a great atmosphere.

Epysode - Obsessions 8.7

I can't pinpoint who the singer sounds like but he's got just the right amount of rasp in his voice for me. Keyboards keep this really fun part going through the whole song, dig that big time. Does this classify as power metal or prog metal? This song doesn't reach the highs of the other two here, but it rocks nonetheless, I struggled with whether to give this a 9 or not but it just falls the tiniest bit short of that marker.

Elite

Thrice - Words in the Water 9.0

You know when I saw Thrice being submitted for some reason I thought of grungy alt metal and this certainly is not it. The drums are my favorite thing about it, giving some flavor to an otherwise somber song. I like that the guitars are not intrusive and keep things going with that pretty little pattern.

Thrice - The Whaler 9.7

Oh this is beautiful. Wow. Everything is perfectly balanced, there is this smooth texture between the instruments and the vocalist is the cherry on top of it all. This song definitely makes me feel like I'm lost at sea knowing I'm not coming home for a while. It's sad but so pretty. The lyric, "Father, where do you go? It's farther than I can see / When are you coming home to me?" (at least I think those are the words) - resonated with me and choked me up a little on repeat listens.

Thrice - Burn the Fleet 8.4

I think the heaviness of this track compared to the other two is the reason this scored lower, but I do like this song, I just miss the soft feeling the others have. It's a perfectly apt song for the theme, but scores a bit short of netting a third bonus point. I like that the verses back off from the distortion and let things 'breathe' so to speak.

Indiscipline

Joe Hisaishi - Merry-go Round of Life 8.4

An interesting strategy this round, sending themes from a movie, an opera, and a video game. There's nothing like the sound of a real violin and pairing it with a piano is never a bad thing... The drama is palpable, and it's a very pretty piece. It's not the kind of music I often put on, but it's good.

Leo Delibes - Flower Duet 8.7

Beautiful singing, easily the best part to me. I enjoy the pizzicato strings mingling with the bowed strings. I'm not familiar with this opera but, as I write this, I'm looking out at a yard covered deep with snow and man this completes the mood. Gorgeous. Again, not something I'm going to reach for often, but it's powerful.

Michiko Naruke - Into the Wilderness 9.2

I am actually a huge fan of video game music. Good game music, from back in the day when melody really mattered instead of ambience and lots of cinematic orchestrations. I've never played Wild Arms but this is exactly why I think game music is so good. It's dramatic and sounds like an overworld or world map theme, is that correct? Makes me want to go on an adventure. Lovely combination of whistling and guitar here.
