Are there any bands you pretty much completely trust now?
« on: October 27, 2018, 12:35:31 PM »
Are there any bands or artists who, when they announce they're releasing a new album, you trust that you're very likely to enjoy it? They haven't let you down so far, so you're certain they know what they're doing.

This is not a thread to trample on that idea. It's fantastically positive thinking and you can just focus on your own hype and excitement for the album.

For me, it's Dream Theater, Steven Wilson, Haken and Frost*.

Haken (my trust in them was just reinforced with Vector), Avantasia and Ayreon/most of Arjen's projects. Maybe also Seventh Wonder, but their releases are pretty rare.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. I can always count on having fun with new Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica is still there but they're on the fence because their last album was the first time I've ever been disappointed with the band - but it did have a couple songs I love, so it's not a total wash, and I'll continue buying everything they put out, so yeah, those two big time.

Not to shit on your pick, Katt, but here goes: Sonata Arctica used to be on my list. I've bought Live in Finland, SGHN, PC, Ecliptica Revisited and TNH blindly. Next one is definitely going to be a 'try before you buy' kind of thing for me.

I feel like I can post this because I used to be one of the biggest fans of this band here.

Not shitting at all, 'cause I totally get it. I have my own complaints about the band. The Ecliptica rerecording is unnecessary and completely forgettable (and not even that good). The Ninth Hour sounds like a band/artist (read: Tony Kakko) stuck in the doldrums. But they've had such a fun career doing all kinds of really good experimentations that I consider it more a misstep than anything else, so for now they're still on my radar. I know I've definitely held out longer than most other people who still want Wolf & Raven clones for the twentieth time. The Days of Grays was their last super high point imo.

Haken
Opeth
Blackstone Cherry - Not many on this site know this band.  The band lives about 75 miles from me in Kentucky, but I had never heard of them until they showed up on someones top 50 albums on this site. A bit like Skynyrd, but with a harder rock sound.

Yeah, I hate when I visit the local circus and all they fucking play is Haken.

Wow, that was my list that included Black Stone Cherry's Folklore and Superstition album.  Glad you enjoyed them.

All right, for me, bands that I can completely trust to give me a very great album.

Alter Bridge (this band has helped me get through some pretty hard times in the 11 years I've followed this band. I'm certain they will inadvertently do it again in their next album)
Tremonti
Myles Kennedy (solo, not the stuff he does with Slash)
Breaking Benjamin
Owl City
Dream Theater
Sixx: A.M. (don't know if they will ever release another album since Nikki Sixx claims to be retired from touring and doing some studio stuff with Motley Crue, but if Sixx: A.M. does another album, I'm bound to enjoy it)

I'd say I'd now lump Haken in there, I love all their albums. Main ones for me would be:

Coheed and Cambria
The Dear Hunter
Devin Townsend
Mastodon
Leprous
Opeth

There are loads of bands, over the years, that would have made this list but either my love for them waned or they released the odd dud album.

There's a few newer bands I love who have a flawless release record but it's just to early for me to put 100% trust in them.

Dream Theater, Haken and Tesseract are the ones that immediately spring to mind. Vanden Plas and Symphony X too.

Before their most recent releases, I also would have had Anathema and Deftones, but the last albums by both of them were a bit of a let down.

The big ones are IQ, Haken, Marillion and Tesseract. DT lost some trust with the Astonishing as well as their recent live performance. I'll keep going to them out of respect for all they've done for me, but they do have some work to do.

Dream Theater is the first band to spring to mind. They've never done anything I haven't either liked (WDADU and FII) or loved (everything else). There's so much talent in the band that whenever they get together, great ideas are going to come out.

Next is Steven Wilson. He's very consistent and always puts out music that I at least find interesting, and almost always end up loving.

It's too early in their career for me to say Ghost, but so far they've put out 4 albums I love and if 'they' (Tobias) keep it up for the next few then I'll consider them a bankable pre-order.

Godspeed You Black Emperor have never let me down over the 20-odd years they've been kicking against the pricks. They with Dream Theater and the guy I'm about to mention are the only band I automatically buy whatever they put out without needing to hear a note.

Finally, my musical idol Mark Knopfler. He's got a new one coming out next month and I've already pre-ordered the bells and whistles box set.

Steven Wilson (solo)
Neal Morse/Neal Morse Band
Dream Theater
Devin Townsend
Muse
Radiohead

That's it, that's the list.

Bands I would say are still auto-buys, but not sure I would say I completely trust them, include:

Death Cab for Cutie
Haken
Opeth
U2
Spock's Beard

Kind of a weird question. WildRangerish…

Playing along, I'd go Dream Theater and Iron Maiden.

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Hmm, actually a tough question. Even my favorite bands, I'll have to check it out before I buy it. THey've all burned me to some degree.

Maybe Ayreon? I wasn't huge into The Theory of Everything, but I liked it plenty and haven't had any releases from him that I have disliked.

I have quite a few auto buy bands, but not so many that I 100% trust to put out a quality product.

The list would be:

Devin Townsend
Rush (even though they have all but admitted they are retired)
Moonsorrow
Enslaved
The Dear Hunter
Tool (I hesitate a little with these guys though, the new album is probably going to end up turning in to the Duke Nukem Forever of the music world (if there really even is a new album (it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they are just yanking everyone's chains)))
Between the Buried and Me (although the first half of Automata almost makes me rethink this)
Shadow Gallery (if they ever decide to release a new album)
Ahab (this one is pushing it a bit)

Diablo Swing Orchestra (although they only have 3 albums)
They have 4 actually.
aka Puppies_On_Acid
I peed next to Ian Mosley and Mark Kelly
Derek Sherinian probably stands 10 feet away from the urinal, shoots from downtown, and announces loudly that he's making history.

Devin Townsend
Periphery

Childish Gambino
Gorillaz
Between The Buried And Me

And definitely Tool. For sure. Total trust there.

IQ and Haken...completely.

At this point, they could pull a Lulu, and I would still give them a shot. In fact, they are currently the only 2 bands I’m aware of with perfect catalogs (at this time, I don’t count the 2 IQ albums without Nicholls)

I'm really not sure about Tool.

Sure, all their albums are awesome, but they haven't released anything in 12 years. Maybe their music evolved from a specific situation or emotionally difficult moments in their lives that made those albums so damn authentic. And maybe they are not in this situation anymore.

Of the 12 years without a new release I have been waiting 10 years (really got to know the band around 2008 or so) and I really can't wait for something new by Tool. But I am also a little scared it might not have that ultra-cool, sinister, mellow vibe of the other albums.
