Two songs vs two songs in a playoff? This shit just writes itself:
[insert coin]
“BOOM-SHAKALAKA!”
“HE'S ON FIRE!”
[insert coin]Ehm, right.
Younguns first, 'cause they were easier:
Parama - Six Roaming Owls: The Dear Hunter:Son and Father Mustard GasMustard Gas: What if Roger Waters and Brian May songwrote for Muse at the end of the millenium? A masterclass in tension-release management sporting a rock opera worthy chorus and some beautiful dark cabaret music. Bonus points for a couple of guilty pleasures of mine: diminished sixth fetish and original chord progressions disguised as accessible epic hooks
Son and Father: What if Paul McCartney joined the above mentioned all-star songwriting team to show everybody how to make 367 melodic clichès huge by sheer power of orchestration? We have lost our way as music users nowadays, because this song would have created a world spread cult in the late seventies, while I had to wait to be 40 and focking around on the internet in order to discover it.
vs
Evermind - Cockroach Sympathizers: Thrice:Daedalus FirebreatherFirebreather: Opens with a stunning pure impact Morello riff, then slips into pretty safe young man metal territory. I hear some Tool (an act I despise) as well as some Soundgarden (an act I adore). Banality is redeemed by a rather infectious (and poppish at its core) epic outro. They sound tight, but the guitar sound is just grating.
Daedalus: The guitar tone suddenly turns into brilliant and extremely pleasing sound, conveying 90% of the song's passion. They go ¾ (always a winner to the moron writing) and in a moment of really inspired songwriting (perfect progressions, beautiful and touching vocal lines) they create something very original and moving. Love the bass ostinato section. The second best song about the Icarus myth, being the best just unreachable.
Match Summary: One all-star and one star starter beat one star starter and one bench warmer.
Winner: Parama
Honour of the arms to the always gracious Evermind, who sent me some unforgettable melodies all roulette long and made concocting bizarro hangmans a real pleasure and challenge. You were unlucky with the POS song (and my idiosincracies) and with this matchup, 'cause you would have easily won versus the other two youngsters this round. I'm sorry to see you go, but I'm glad to free you from regret: your TDH songs would have lost anyway, even though by a lesser margin (only The Bitter Suite is on par with Parama's songs). I was forgetting, I will be forever grateful for The King of Swords. I left footprints on the ceiling.
Puppies_On_Acid - West Coast Lost Marbles: Devin Townsend:Deadhead Heart BabyDeadhead: It opens with the winner of the “Impersonate Van Halen's tone” award, then it launches itself in a desperate quest to occupy every frequency in my ear, basically metalling up Wish You Were Here's theme ad nauseam. This Chinese Wall of Sound is focking impressive, but it leaves me without wiggle room to appreciate musical objects. Very positive note: I can definitely spot the Patton's Mad Vocals Scientist Gene in this crazy dude.
Heart Baby: We go full Enya and suddenly everything I was missing sound-wise in the previous offering is here for the joyful taking. Great ambient piece, airy yet incredibly dense, creating beautiful atmospheres without any trace of easy delicacy, but with cocky sonic thrusts. I love the strong licks in strong opposition to the (simple) main harmony, really interesting. A grower.
vs
Sacul - Hangmanen Addicts: Boris:Jackson Head PinkPink: The grimy stepchild to the dirty violent late sixties Detroit Garage Sound. I can appreciate the attitude and the vintage aggression, as I will acknowledge this would be great if the vocals were part of the evil assault. Sadly, they're rather wimpy and monotone. The result is a sort of orgasm denial to my ears. All in all, a wasted opportunity for a memorable monster destructor track.
Jackson Head: Man, you've won the tank round, but you would have fared even better (or worse, it depends on the point of view) with this … thing. Let's just say that there's music enhancing drugs and there's music enhanced by drugs. This one needs drugs to be tolerated. I realise I may sound harsh, but I owe you honesty.
Match Summary: One rotation guy and one role player beat one bench warmer and one summer camp cut.
Winner: Puppies
Sacul, your submissions were always exciting, surprising and run a pretty wide spectrum. They were always a thrilling anticipation. This was a very risky pick, since I've never manifested love for these peculiar sounds, but you made it so far bravely, and it's only fitting you bravely fell. If there's an eliminated contestant I would love to keep receiving kinky songs from, that's you. Salute.
