But I'm not having a Tank Round.

Looks like Ostura is gonna save my ass. :metal

When you first started pimping Ostura, I checked them out, but I couldn't get into it. That said, I listened to the song you sent and it was fantastic. I may have to give that album another look.

Duality is aptly named. The first half in amazing... the second half loses me. But in total... a great song. I do prefer Erosion.

There are a few songs I like more than Duality on the album, Let There Be and Surge specifically, I just felt Duality was a better fit for this round.

I must say, criticizing Benoit David's vocal talents would have been the absolute last thing I would have expected out of this submission.  I mean, he was good enough to tour for Yes, so ... yeah.

But the vocals in Yes blow.

Oh, and Patton; when he sings, he is SO good; "Ashes To Ashes", most of "Angel Dust".   Can I send "Everything's Ruined" in this roullette?   :) :) :)

Can I send "Detroit Rock City" in yours?  ;)

Avantasia and Ayreon are also below 8... I'm playing in the wrong roulette.

Well, there must be some reason if some acts failed to pierce my filters during the last 20 years. It's not like I've been in jail  :D

I must say, criticizing Benoit David's vocal talents would have been the absolute last thing I would have expected out of this submission.  I mean, he was good enough to tour for Yes, so ... yeah.

TASTES!!!

Still, I'll take the 8, even if it is (barely) middle of the pack.

I like the dude's voice and delivery in his comfort zone. I believe I've criticised his buddies for writing him in a corner  :P

I'll give you plenty in your roulette, my friend.  :corn

But I'm not having a Tank Round.

I'm at work without my gifs, otherwise I would have TedLanged you  ;D

Round Four Results, 4 of 5:

Aefenwelg - The Uhhhh.. Wildcats:

mewithoutYou – The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate:

Bus Impression: “A magical Cohenesque/Croceish parable. Who focking cares if it turns preachy”

Strange intriguing unique piece of song, this one. It starts like a revisited medieval ballad a la John Barleycorn, but the brilliantly timed comments from fiddle, harp, bassoon and french horn make you realise you're in for a tale with a pretty larger (not only musical) scope. I should be annoyed by the singer's delivery, but (as demonstration of the importance of context and the impossibility to like/dislike anything in a vacuum) that modest yet passionate soryteller's tone is a perfect fit. The absolute best part is the climatic interludio eventually seared by the electric guitar. Sadly that energy went someway lost during the finale (dunno, maybe shifting vocals one octave up? More guitars?) resulting in a payoff a wee less satisfying than its setup. Whether I agree or not with the lyrical message is irrelevant, since the way it's brought across is genuine, efficient, and touchingly powerful. That's what I love about art: every “what” and “why” is praiseworthy as long as the “how” is competent.

Vote: 8.5 – Wet dream #4782: Ian Anderson singing this tale.

kingshmegland - King Kongshmegland:

Enchant – Sinking Sand:

Bus Impression: “That bassist's name and cell phone on my desk, posthaste”

Risin' up, back on the streets, did my time, took my chances ... Sorry, couldn't help it. Kidding aside, I am struggling to find a single note out of place here. The arrangement and song structure are simply perfect and I can't find a frequency conflict after 10 listens (and I still have my 14k range). Haunting original guitar riffing (and tasty solo work, and I mean DeGarmo tasty), the ability to prog things up with just a piano and few seconds of synth, dynamics-conscious drums. Let me please single the bassman out: not mentioning the impressively elegant solo, the man pumps out beautiful melodies all tune long and still manages to be organic and at song's service. Next time you have dinner with the bloke, beers are on me. I'm focking getting predictable, but the only thing standing between this track and a 9.5 is the slightly under stress singing: please copy&paste my vocals comment from Chad's submission.

Vote: 8.5 – You haven't sent me something not sounding stunningly beautiful yet.

:metardica: Puppies_On_Acid - West Coast Lost Marbles:

Sieges Even – Unbreakable:

Bus Impression: “Is it good or bad when your favourite instrument is the mixing board?”

I will first write the first thing I thought at first listen: this song sounds absolutely fantastic. Glacial yet lively, like a flame incapsulated inside a diamond. In many aspects, production is very similar to FII, and it may be not accidental it features a veeeery Trial of Tears groove and a couple of moments veeery reminiscent of New Millennium. What impressed me the most is the handling of spots of complete silence. If musical elegance can be defined as “ruining silence only when strictly necessary and in the best possible way”, well, this song is pretty elegant. What ruined possible perfection (here's the difference from FII's production) is the mildly tedious overcompression. Anyway, great backing vocals work, moments of quality Rush, brave and excellent choice to exclude keyboards, sense of theatre, Whitewalkers' icy blades guitar slashes.

Vote: 8.5 – See? I don't mind the vocals! They're right for this!

Sacul - Hangmanen Addicts:

Anathema – Untouchable pt1:

Bus Impression: “A third base date mix-tape in an era that forgot mix-tapes”

Too simple to get a 10, so perfectly executed to exceed its 8 ceiling and scrap a half bonus point. This is what rock aficionados around the world should have forced U2 to do at gunpoint during the last 20 years in order to honour their first 20 years of career. I'll tell you more, put this baby in IWBY's place inside Octavarium and I may be marginally willing to get on board with that awful genre-spanning style excercise/project instead of treating it like an EP featuring only the title track and TALW. But I digress. The acoustic intro is honey to hungry ears, guitars barge on the scene with the perfect amazing violence, vocal harmonies are top focking notch and the whole final section has the right amount of Muse magic powder on it. It's very difficult to base a whole tune on one single idea and a crescendo, this one succeeds.

Vote: 8.5 – Yours must be the widest range of submissions so far.

I got a live version of Untouchable in my first roulette and it was incredible, and I didn't want to say it earlier, but it had an energy that this studio version lacked.

I found the Enchant incredibly boring. ;D

Another solid score.  Sweet.  Also, here is the wife and I with Doug Ott (guitarist) on the left and Ed Platt (bassist) on the right at Progstock this year.

the song's first half is it's written for vocals way more powerful and extended than the guy is actually gifted with, and it often shows.

Too many ex-aequos and very clear levels of liking this time. Next round we'll switch back to the fine points, with new parameters:

10: Lost for words, big horror
9: Butt-ugly, but I can manage to make it alive through the end
8: Amidst the feces there's at least one thing I'm saving
7: It sucks with moderation
6: Flawed song with several good things going
5: Ehm, I kinda like it
4: Good song, why do you think I wouldn't enjoy this?
3: This is great, you should have sent this the round before.
2: This is an all time classic, I'm feeling insulted
1: Deep Purple
0: Dream Theater

Good day, bedlam. I thank you all for your patience, but I was secretly procrastinating in fear of next round's listening sessions.

Round Four Results, 5 of 5:

Parama - Six Roaming Owls:

The Hirsch Effect – Agitation:

Bus Impression: “My ears are arguing with my guts over this”

The guts won. This is a visceral intense sense-raping experience flowing like a chaotic stream of consciousness, yet painstakingly crafted with subtle musical touches. Only after the feelings stop pounding you can start to attempt a kind of cold analysis, but the real magic is to really lay down your body to the song, on its conditions. The best way to describe its intensity is late King Crimson + The Wall + solo John Lennon + Tool and still wouldn't give a faithful description. From the very start the brilliant synth work tells you this is not Smashing Pumpkins weak ass angst, while the nervous animal riffing tells you're not in for some nu metal crap. By the time the glorious “Aahh ahhh ahhh” arrives, I've lost my marbles, and only because I forced myself to take notes I can remember (and not just being destroyed by) the Mermaid segment, the electric Stravinskij instrumental section, and the monstrous gravestone finale. What a focking journey.

Vote: 9 – For someone who signed up to make me regret running a roulette, you sent pretty awesome shit.

romdrums - Seedy Rom and The Hard Drives:

Blue Food – Joker Face:

Bus Impression: “Alex, stop focking groove dancing like a madman in the bus' aisle. We want to sleep!”

I'm incapable of foul mood and I've sometimes risked literal jailtime not resisting the urge to slip a joke at the worst time, but I must admit this tune makes me even happier than me old folks focking made me. The perfect mix of electric sexy grimy funk and a horny horn section blending with rock as anybody this side of Chicago before they lost their mind. An inebriating feeling of dirty sweaty mess held together by Jamiroquaish organisation. A lot of my teen favourite acts – Extreme, Living Colour, … - could have taken this train but someway missed it. Conversely, at first listen I thought: it's a shame they lack a guitar alpha dog like Nuno, Vernon Reid or Terry Kath, then I realised how foolish the thought was. That's exactly this act's strenght. They are a panoramic happy orgy scene without a single close-up, and no one is fluffing. And, before I forget, THOSE handclaps!

Vote: 9 – Potentially my favourite newfound act with Snarky Puppy

Bus Impression: “This is how DT would sound if Kevin never left and Mike fulfilled his Russell Allen fantasy in 2002”

This should be called Trinity, for it's threefold (symphonic metal assault – prayer – heroic crescendo sunset ride) and divine. We throw the “epic” monicker too easily around, but in this case it scarcely is enough to do the tune justice. Before I single out individual terrific moments, let me state that FINALLY a song is planned for an orchestra integrating metal gear, and not the other (lame) way around. It begins like a Hans Zimmer track for desert action movies, then the classical instruments lay down the law before a chorus sporting my favourite kind of hook: the apparently unsatisfying but secretly titillating elusive harmonic resolution. Moments of Illumination Theory riffing, of course, and I believe someone else has already copyrighted that soloing tradeoff. The central prayer (very touching) is the perfect way to cleanse the palate and allow the finale to take all the time it needs to expand in its glory. Great muscular singer, amazingly capable of shifting gears and adapt his energy to quieter moods.

Vote: 9 – First The Cave, then this. State-of-the-art prog metal is in the middle east, people.

I'm not updating the standings. I'm not even looking at them before round five is over, for my soft heart needs to determine eliminations in the dark. Plus, next round will be quasi-lightning (like I want to sit through shit for a whole week) and won't feature Hangman. I want you people comment on the turds right from the start, so full disclosure as soon as the roster's full. As compensation, I'm giving you my impressions live, right after first complete listen (I've already sampled submissions in order to check the links) for each song.

Anyone who sends growls this round is taking an easy way out.

Agreed.   I legit love the song I sent - it's well documented here - and it's perhaps the polar opposite of what many send frequently.   Growls aren't a stretch for this.   Remember, the scuttlebutt was about questioning whether the sender REALLY liked the music being sent.  It's not even  a question for some of you  whether you really like "growls" or not.
