425’s Second Roulette v. Keep your hands upon the wheel
« on: August 22, 2018, 11:07:31 AM »
Hello, DTF! I am back on the forum, and, in a matter of days, back in the roulette game with my second roulette (though I was also a judge on the most recent Roulette Championship).

As a few of you know, I left the forum for a while about a year and a half ago, for two reasons: 1) My life has been very busy for about the past two years now; and 2) Likely partially as a result of that, my interest in music was waning.

In recent months, however, I’ve had a lot more free time, and I have gotten back into listening to music more often—particularly focusing on my long-time favorites. As a result, I decided to return to DTF, and decided it was time to run another roulette in hopes of discovering some new favorites.

The structure of this roulette is going to be fairly conventional, for the most part, with a small twist that comes out of my primary reason for doing this: I have long known that I am the type of person who goes for depth rather than breadth in my music listening. My pattern has always been to discover a small number of artists that really click with me, and delve deep into their discographies, rather than listening to a lot of different bands. My music library is probably significantly smaller than most DTF users’, and definitely contains fewer unique artists. I don’t think there’s anything inherently right or wrong about my pattern, but I figure the best approach to the roulette is to try to encourage participants to get me to fall in love with an artist.

To that end, as advertised in the initial thread title, I am going for an absolute bare-bones banned list, with only 18 artists banned outright. These 18 artists represent those whose discographies I have explored most deeply. The majority of them are my absolute favorite artists. Most of them I have heard all the studio albums from. They are selected because I know for sure I have heard all I need to hear with these artists—if not because I know all their albums, then either because I plan to get them all in due time, or because I know that I’m not going to like the remaining ones.

In addition to this list of wholly banned artists, of course, I have banned a list of albums and songs. For the artists on this list, you are free to submit anything that is not specifically banned. In fact, you are encouraged to do so, especially if there is an artist on that list that you believe I have not given a sufficient look at—they’re on that list because I have not been convinced to check out any of their music besides what I’ve already heard.

Also, all the submissions from my v1 and the Roulette Championship are, of course, banned. The full list of those is in my second post.

Tastes:
I dunno, figure it out yourselves. :P

In brief: I like a lot of melody, I like the grandiose and the serious. I like this no matter what genre it is in, though my favorite genre is prog metal.

I do not, as a general rule, like music that is crude or humorous. I do not like dissonance (think the end of Misunderstood). I have a hard time liking music that is relentlessly bleak in mood (think Porcupine Tree), though bleak is not the same as sad (bleak conveys a sense that life is perpetually unhappy, whereas sadness can be temporary).

I do not like Bent Knee. It’s not banned but send it at your own peril.

I have mixed feelings about growls. I don’t have a particular aversion to them if they’re used sparingly and appropriately. If a song is all or mostly growling, there’s a solid chance I will think it is excessive and dislike that. But then again I think “Heir Apparent” is a masterpiece. So there is no solid rule here.

How can you find out more about my tastes? Good question! This is the other mildly experimental twist I am trying here. Once per round (defined as between score releases, so either before or after submitting your song—and in the first round any time between now and the score release), each participant will have the opportunity to do three things:
  • Ask me (by posting it in the thread) about an artist that is wholly banned. I will DM you a couple of paragraphs saying what I like/dislike about that artist, along with a list of favorite songs. This might help you figure out what I might like in another artist.
  • Ask me (by posting it in the thread) about an artist that is partially banned. I will DM you a few words saying what my impression has been of that artist, along with favorite songs if applicable. This might help you figure out whether to send another song from that artist.
  • Guess (by posting it in the thread) one of the ten artists that yield bonus points (as described below). As they are guessed, their names will be revealed publicly.

Oh, and here are links to my first roulette and the Roulette Championship. Reading through these might also help.

Rules:
  • There are eight rounds. With the exception of the EP round, each round will be scored out of 10. Each entry will receive a whole-number score—no half-points.
  • I’m going to try to be a meaner scorer than I was the last two times.
  • I prefer submissions to come through DTF PM and in the form of either YouTube or Spotify links. If that is not an option, we can work something else out, but that is a strong preference.
  • I will initially accept as many people as want to join. After the third round, I am going to cut the bottom three scores. I will also cut the bottom three after the fourth, fifth and seventh rounds, which will leave a top six standing for the final EP round.
  • No hard length limit, but try to keep it reasonable. Except in the epic round. Then be unreasonable.
  • There is one and only one option for bonus points, and it comes on an idea I half came up with on my own, half stole from jingle.boy: I have a (secret) list of ten artists that I feel like I should give more attention to. Either I’ve heard 1-3 of their albums and am still unconvinced, or I’ve not listened to them much at all. If you submit one of these artists and score a 9, you receive a bonus point. If you score a perfect 10, you receive two bonus points.
  • Artists submitted during the roulette will be banned if either: 1) A song from them scores an 8 or higher; or 2) They receive scores totaling 14 or higher. I’ll also reserve the right to ban an artist that doesn’t fit either of these conditions at my discretion.

Game on. Count me in. I have zero knowledge of your tastes so perusing the banned list will be fun.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Your tastes look quite interesting although just looking at the banned list I can't exactly tell who you like and who you don't like. Everything from Bruce Hornsby to Blind Guardian to Alt-J, looks like I have loads of wiggle room here. Hard to tell if you're a prog or power metal aficionado, which is good, because I think I'll be able to send from a wide range of artists. Ready to get last place with a Dragonforce song  :metal

So remember that time when I lost by half a point in a first roulette because 425 didn't like All a Man Can Do at the end of my EP and then liked that Beyond the Bridge album enough to add it to his banned list? (by the way, 425, Beyond the Bridge only have one album out, so they should belong to "Wholly Banned Artists" list). Or maybe that time when I lost the Championship roulette to Sacul by what, one point?

Well, even if you guys don't, I do. :lol

I am so in for this one.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Keep in mind that the last two sections on the banned list are things that were sent to me in the previous roulettes! I may or may not actually be a fan of those things. The ones that aren't banned for having been in a roulette (the first two sections) will probably give you a better indication.

So remember that time when I lost by half a point in a first roulette because 425 didn't like All a Man Can Do at the end of my EP and then liked that Beyond the Bridge album enough to add it to his banned list? I wouldn't expect anything less! Although I worry that it'll somehow happen a third time and then you'll never forgive me! :lol

And yeah, putting Beyond the Bridge into the "wholly banned artists" list occurred to me, but I wanted there to be a nice round number so I could put it in the thread title, and since it's only the one album...

these are what they call hard feelings

This is my favorite song on Melodrama.

18 is even and divisible by 3. So it's just more pleasing (to me) than the odd and prime 19.

If anything, I think a prime number looks better than something divisible unless it's something ending with 0 or 5. Oh well, it's your roulette. :lol

Great to have you both!

I've already received one entry, which reminds me: I'm happy to accept Round 1 songs any time people are ready to submit them. It will be an open round.

Had fun last time, although I'm unsure if I can bring anything to the table that hasn't already been broughten. I'll try though!

In!
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

I see SO many opportunities I don't even know what to send - might be sending mine late in the evening :lol Looks like several eliminations are coming so I hope everyone comes out swinging. Game on!

Yep, we're already at 13, so there will be some eliminations after the second round. I'm glad that so many people wanted to join, though!
