Train vs LordCostFirst impression: This match up seems to be between a reasonably safe submission, and a somewhat risky one. Both are pretty great to be honest. Atter one listen of each, my initial feeling is that the safe bet will have the better staying power, partly because it really taps into my love of a couple of other bands. But then the riskier one was really cool, so anything could happen. Time will tell.
Final opinions:
LordCost: Cardiacs – Guns (1999)This was definitely a risk, but actually I really like it. Your previous “quirky” submissions haven’t done especially well (comparatively), and when you tried to send Sing to God and I explained I’d actually heard it before and didn’t remember being too keen, you sent another Cardiacs anyway. And to be honest, I have to admire you for that because this is great. I actually had another listen to Sing to God as well, to see if it’s a matter of my tastes changing since I last heard it and maybe I liked it after all, but no I honestly just don’t think it’s particularly great. There are some superb songs, but others I actually find actively annoying for some reason, and it’s just too long for something so quirky. Not so on Guns. It’s still pretty wacky, but all of the songs are at least enjoyable and some of them are brilliant (particularly in the second half, almost all of which I love), and the runtime makes it a very entertaining listen. This album has also made me realise that Cardiacs is surely a big influence on Orbs, who I also enjoy. I’m hopefully meeting Dan Briggs in December when BTBAM tour so I might well ask him then if I remember!
Score: 8.0Train: OWEL – OWEL (2013) Considering my love for The Dear Hunter and The River Empires, it’s not surprising that this folky, proggy and occasionally theatrical indie was right up my alley. On my first listen, I did wonder during the first couple of tracks if it might end up feeling a bit middle-of-the-road. As pretty as the opening stuff is, it takes a little while to get going energy-wise. But the second half of Scales has some great build up, and then Death In The Snow is absolutely wonderful and I was hooked from there. On further listens, the whole thing is pretty amazing. It’s not as hauntingly beautiful as some of the River Empires stuff, and it’s not as thrilling as The Dear Hunter’s best albums, but it fills a great niche somewhere between the two and does everything rather excellently. After a slight dip in performance (although I genuinely appreciate you sending some unique and risky stuff) this is a superb return to form and the highlight of the semi finals.
Score: 9.0The verdict: Well then, I enjoyed the Cardiacs a lot more than I would have expected based on what I’d heard of their stuff before, but the OWEL album is just wonderful and gets better and better with each listen. Which I suspected might be the case on my first listen. So although LordCost scores the joint-second-best score in the semi finals (although with three other people, in fairness), there could only be really one winner here.
Winner: Train. Congrats!
LoCo, thanks for sending me such a cool variety of music, some of which was incredible. Arcane Roots in particular was the best album of the roulette (unless it’s beaten in the final of course, which isn’t especially likely), and the Rishloo and Vangough were also fantastic. And good on you for sticking with some of the quirky stuff that you love and which didn’t always work brilliantly for me - I’m glad the slightly lower ratings (and the fact that I wasn’t keen on Sing to God) didn’t put you off sending Guns because it’s definitely changed my view of Cardiacs.
