JOINT FIFTH PLACE
Parama
Round 5 submission: Hannes Grossmann – The Radial Covenant (2014)First impression: Not your best submission but it's pretty good. Some cracking stuff but some I found a bit meh on first listen.
Final opinion: This was a fairly risky submission (whether you realised it or not), but it's pretty solid. When it comes to heavy music like this I definitely need a decent amount of melody for it to grab me. The death metal bands I love tend to make everything very melodic and/or atmospheric even in the heavy parts, and metalcore bands often throw in some huge choruses. Musically a lot of this sounds more like the latter (plenty of moments remind me of earlyish-BTBAM) but it doesn’t really do the choruses. The album is definitely at its strongest, in my opinion, when it does go melodic. The opening track is absolutely superb, The Voyager is a fun proggy instrumental, and the title track also has some excellent stuff. There’s enough of that for me to like the album quite a bit, but not enough for me to love it. There are whole segments that I just find quite monotonous (like pretty much all of The Sorcerer… meh) and which bring the album down a bit.
Score: 7.5
Total score = 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 40.0--------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOINT FIFTH PLACE
TAC
Round 5 submission: Euphoreon – Ends of the Earth (2018)First impression: This could well turn out to be your best submission of the roulette.
Final opinion: Dunno how you pulled this off, but your submissions just keep getting better and better, like you're finding where our tastes intersect. This is such great stuff, and a little different to all the other melodic death metal I listen to in subtle ways. It sort of does all the things the genre can do, without relying too much of any of them. It's super melodic and really epic, and also atmospheric in places, but still always heavy and riff-driven. It's proggy in places, rhythmically and structurally, but never in a way that's especially complex or hard to follow. Sort of sounds like a fusion of melodeath and prog with elements of power metal included in a really fun way that creates a huge and engaging sound. It's a mix that could have felt cheesy or bland, but for whatever reason they've done it in a way that hit me just in exactly the right places. There are some great atmospheric moments too, Zero Below the Sun is one of the standouts for me. And Mirrors, which you highlighted, is also excellent. But to be honest it's all great. I loved this on first listen and it's only gotten better as I've got to know it more and little details come out more, especially in some of the great guitar work. One of my favourites and best surprises of the whole roulette.
Score: 9.0
Total score = 7.5 + 7.5 + 8.0 + 8.0 + 9.0 = 40.0--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ELIMINATED
Lethean
Round 5 submission: Kingcrow – Phlegethon (2010)First impression: This all sounded fine, but only a couple of tracks really grabbed me on first listen.
Final opinion: This is a very nice prog album with a good range of ideas and influences, but it doesn't really excite me enough to change my opinion of Kingcrow I'm afraid. Like the other album I've heard by them, it does everything pretty well and ticks all the boxes for me to like it, but nothing jumps about enough to really properly grab me. The vocals and melodies are all good, but the hooks aren't especially strong. The production is clear and competent, but lacks impact for me. Performances are all solid, but not especially noteworthy. There are definitely some standout moments, particularly in the title track, but not enough of them to make me love it.
Score: 7.5
Total score = 8.0 + 8.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 39.5It brings me no pleasure at all to have to eliminate you, as you sent me some cracking music and especially after you were doing so well early on (joint 1st after round two!). The last couple of submissions, while still very good, just weren't quite as exciting for my tastes, and you didn't have as much of a buffer as Parama and Train who did the same. But I'm super grateful for those first three submissions especially, with Voyager being the real standout and a definite purchase, but Need was also excellent and you've prompted me to finally explore more of Katatonia's discography.

Semi finals:Luoto vs TAC
Luke vs Parama
Train vs LordCost
Semi finals are a knockout, so you could send my my 5th ranked album of the 6 and still progress if your opponent sends the 6th ranked.
In the unlikely event that two people send the same album, obviously one will need to resend of they are opponents, but if they're in different matches then I'll accept it.
So feel free to send whenever you're ready.
