What do Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death have to do with this roulette?  Not much really, I just had trouble coming up with a catchy subject.

Some key points from my previous OP’s that - after 6 years - still haven’t changed.
I'm not doing this to explore new genre's of music, so don't expect to get much love from pop, electronica (just ask Bolsters) or any genre requiring the words ”post" or "core" or “math” or “alt” or “death” or “thrash” to describe it.  In fact, that kind of music might put you on the fast track to getting the boots.

My intention is for rounds to be a week at most - 2 days for you to decide what to send, 4-5 days for me to listen and writeup. I'm not going to chase people to submit, so if you're running late, your song just might not get many listens.  As one of my old bosses used to say, this is the FIFO method - Fit In, or Fuck Off.

Now... the guidelines.

First and foremost, MAKE IT FUN.  Roulette's aren't just about sharing good music you think the organizer will like, it's about having fun. I can get excellent music recommendations from Spotify, last.fm, Amazon, YouTube, BandCamp fishing expeditions, and/or Progstreaming. I host a roulette to have fun WHILE discovering new music.

The banned list.  Even if I've listened to an artist lots of times, if there are songs/albums I don't know, I just might allow it. Great example, Zydar sent me Aerosmith in my first roulette. I have their box set, and a few albums, but I didn't know what he gave me.  I'll allow that kinda stuff.  There are lots of artists I like, but I don't know everything by them - as an example, The Moody Blues, Magnum, and and Rod Stewart from the banned list. I’ve listened to a bunch of their stuff, but there’s lots I don’t know.  Send what you will, but I have the right to reject if I know an artist too well.  Here’s a link that includes a copy/paste of my iTunes Library for the ultra-keeners.  It also has the bands that I received in my 1st three roulettes.  Below is the list of artists that I have over 50 or more listens to in my iTunes library - Like I said, those with fewer plays may not be formally banned, but you'll might be hard pressed to sneak one of these by me.  Not impossible, but most of these would be off limits.  Lastly check my last.fm. Searching is a pain, but you can look for a specific artist by using this format (note the "+" that needs to be in place of any band name with multiple words) https://www.last.fm/user/jingle-boy/library/music/Led+Zeppelin

Participants.  Come one come all.  Some may not make it to the end however … see the Twists.

Format.  8 Rounds.. maybe 10 depending on whether I move quickly or not

Submitting.  Spotify, or email me the .mp3 (chadrbelcher... I use gmail).  If not available on either, just tell me the band/song ... I have ways.  I prefer to avoid YT, as sometimes the quality is shyte.

My tastes.  For those that don't know, figure it out yourself :lol.  The banned list, last.fm, and 8 years of posting history ought to be enough.

Scoring.Stack Rank - rankings will be from 1-10 … 1 being the best song, 10 being the least best.  If there’s more than 10 people in this, there will be ties.

Twists - these are clear in my mind, and hopefully they don’t seem too convoluted.  Just something to add a little bit of fun each round.

Twist #1a.  Three strikes and you’re out.  I'm not really interested in repeatedly subjecting my self to mediocre music.  If you finish in the bottom 1/3 three times, you’re getting sent home. If a lot of people sign up, I might (aggressively) modify this rule, as I don't think I can digest 17 songs over 8-10 rounds.
Twist #1b.  If I hate it, it won't get much replay effort, and I may instantly give you a 10 - you’ll also get 2 strikes.  Don't send me crap music that doesn't align with my tastes.

Twist #2a. Handicaps.  Each round, whoever finishes last will be given the opportunity to handicap someone that finished in the Top 3.  More on the handicaps later.  They won’t be anything too disastrous, just give a little extra challenge for the leaders to stay the leaders.
Twist #2b.  Someone in the Top 3 each round will be randomly awarded an “I’m rubber, you’re glue” award, and be able to reverse the handicap if they happen to be the one chosen by the bottom-dweller.

Possible Handicaps:
1) Instrumental or ballad
2) Epic (15+ minutes) or shorty (under 3:30)
3) Letter or colour - the song, band or album must start with that letter, or have a colour in it the title/name
4) Opening or closing track
5) Seven Deadly Sins - something to do with any of Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Wrath, or Greed
6) Aggressive or Mellow
7) Song from the childhood years of the handicapped player

:burns:

Twist #3.  How the hell did I miss them!?!?  I have a list of 20 bands that while I kinda know and am mostly ambivalent about, I’m willing to be convinced - 9 bands are modern-era Prog or Metal; 11 bands are 80s era Metal (though some are still making music these days).  These are all Tier-1 / very well known and well discussed bands around the DTFs.  If you want to take a shot at submitting these bands, then I’ll grant you a reward of your choice - either a 2 place ranking improvement, or a 1 place penalty to any other player of your choice.  In previous roulettes, there are an equal number of cases where this kind of submission would’ve gone horribly wrong (Iced Earth and Manowar come to mind), as those that were a smashing success - I’m eternally grateful to wolfking for giving me W.A.S.P., and lonestar for giving me IQ.  Take your chances if you dare.  I will ask this, don’t simply try and land on these bands just for the sake of the ‘reward’.  If you send a shit song (for my tastes) that gets a poor score, a 2 point improvement isn’t going to help you that much in the end.  Everyone’s focus should be on sending great music.  I’m just trying to give an incentive to take a chance.

Protip #1… Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, and Haken are NOT on this list.  I’ve tried with all of those far too many times to give them any more chances.
Protip #2… none of them are what my boy Evermind would classify as Zantera / Sacul-music

Lastly, put on your big-boy underoos and take any criticism or elimination like a man.  lonestar is single-handedly responsible for the most recommendations in my library from any DTF'r, yet he didn't make it past the qualifying round in my last roulette.  Shit happens.  Don't take things personally.

people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

I see Randy Newman is free to send? :neverusethis:

Considering I rely on this forum to show me prog music I doubt I'll have much in that realm to introduce so this will be a nice challenge... just hope I don't get eliminated early  :|

There was that Sons of Seasons outfit that you sent Lethean I think - he hated it, but I thought it was excellent.

Of all the music ever, there are surely songs/bands in everyone's repertoire that might fit the bill here.

well I've been involved in all of your roulettes; so if this is the last one, I might as well complete the saga lol

As long as you are ok with meat and potatoes/would have been my thing 20 years ago/not really my cup of tea/solid/type older songs, I can join.  If you want modern songs, I'm probably the worst on the forum to join lol

But count me in.

Sounds a bit complicated for my tiny mind but sign me up. If just to put off the inevitable “when are you going to run a roulette?” retorts.

Dude... I almost called the third twist the "jj twist".  That one should be right up your alley.

May I apply with campy stuff or the roster's already pretty full?

J Boy, all rounds Open?

Yes.

I should also mention that I have two other potential twists - nothing major ... just something increase the 'equity' in the rankings in an attempt to give everyone a shot at winning - that may come up during the competition.

Chadster, will you post those twist 3 80's bands?

I haven't decided yet.

This should be called the mario kart roulette, because mario kart is the king of rubberbanding (you know, the act of rewarding badly performing players like myself to either bring down frontrunners or get closer to the front)

Anyway I think I'll send pretty soong!
