In your opinion, apart from Sabs and Priest, are there any other bands from the 70's that can be considered heavy metal?
I know that an argument can be made for Motorhead.

Dude, seriously? Just Sabbath, Priest, and Motorhead? GOOGLE. There are tons... maybe not 'metal' by today's stupid heavy standards but there are tons.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Yeah, there are tons.  This is not really a valid question.

As far as metal bands that were particularly influential, a few that I would list would be:

-Maiden, obviously.  Along with Priest, they epitomized the NWOBHM movement.

-Y&T:  Probably not influential on a world-wise basis, but they were hugely influential on the California rock and metal scene.  Most of the bands that came up in the late '70s and '80s in SF and LA (and Sac) opened for them at one point or another and/or cite them as an influence.

I'd rather say Riot than Y&T.

Why does it need to be a "rather than?"  They each occupied an important niche.  But Riot's influence was more on the East Coast bands, from what I understand.

Don't know what your exact parameters for heavy metal are, so you could file them as hard rock, but I'd add:

Scorpions, Accept, Riot, Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore and ... RAINBOW!

Even though Maiden was playing clubs in the late 70s, their debut didn’t come out til 1980.

Saxon at least had their first album in 79.

I’d say Deep Purple deserves a mention.

One of the many great things about 70s music was that bands tended not to be labelled as this or that genre; they explored a variety of styles. So Led Zepellin for example could be said to have written 'heavy metal' songs (Achilles Last Stand). Queen wrote Stone Cold Crazy. Genesis wrote Down And Out. The Beatles had Helter Skelter and Pink Floyd had The Nile Song (both late 60s I know, but they fit my point). My dad saw hundreds of concerts in his life, including out and out 'metal' bands, and he always maintained that he'd never been to a louder, heavier gig than The Who in the early 70s when they played Quadrophenia.

UFO influenced everybody. They might not be widely known to people outside of music circles, but their influence on the genre' is extremely wide reaching. Every "shredder" in rock/metal has a little bit of Michael Schenker in their DNA whether they realize it, or not.

I'd also mention Rush. Anthem, Bastille Day and 2112 are very much metal.

That first Lucifer's Friend album is amazing.

Also The Sweet's Desolation Boulevard, which over half of the tracks have been covered by hard rock bands.

I knew that I would have to be quick if I was going to get a post in before you involving them. You're the ultimate UFO fan in these part as far as I'm concerned.

Hah! Yes, I saw the thread at work today, and I obviously thought UFO, but I'd want to write more and hate doing so on my phone.

I could've just made my point with three letters. :lol

Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash have been widely quoted by Iron Maiden as primary influences, for example.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Oh, I know all about Budge. I have Impeckable on vinyl. Unfortunately, I never really dove into them like I probably should have.
