If a Kiss song comes on, by all means, please DDT me and knock me out so I don't have to listen to it.

I honestly don't think I could answer this, my favorites have ebbed in and out of each other over the last 40+ years.

In 1976 my older brothers introduced me to Yes, followed by The Who, The Kinks, Rush and Triumph, and up through high school they all took turns at the top spot. After high school Marillion, IQ and DT joined the mix, with The Kinks, Rush and Triumph falling out of the rankings. There was a good ten year run with DT at the top, but for now I'd say IQ holds the spot.

Pinpointing 1 favourite band for me is impossible. I know at some point in time, these bands have been ones I have called favourites:

Metallica
Iron Maiden
Avenged Sevenfold
Alter Bridge
Dream Theater
The Mars Volta
Between the Buried and Me
The Dear Hunter
Hypno5e
God Is An Astronaut
Leprous

But the second half of the list was already at a point where I stopped having #1 favourite bands so they pretty much alternate from time to time depending on my mood.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Before I started playing guitar I liked stuff like The Offspring, Green Day, Tool, Pantera etc. and then when I started playing guitar at around 11, it was Metallica. But then I turned I think 13 in 1997 and it was Iron Maiden, hasn't changed since.  Hearing them for the first time changed my life forever.  Metallica was a massive introduction to metal, but hearing Maiden took everything to a whole new level.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Early nineties: Guns 'n Roses, Pearl Jam

Late nineties: Dream Theater, Manic Street Preachers, Oasis

After that I became pretty lazy which had changed over the last few years

Right now I my list would be something like:
DT
Haken
Fates Warning
Redemption
Leprous
Ne Obliviscaris
Animals as Leaders

My first favorite band, was actually Krokus.  I collected all of the albums (in the orange Arista cassette cases) until Change of Address.  But I was a voracious consumer of music staring in in the mid-80's and a lot of bands were probably briefly my favorites.  A couple years later, it was Queensryche, with Metallica a close second.  Bands tend to fall off my "favorites" list when they stop making new music (or stop making good music).  Dream Theater was on my radar, but didn't take over the top slot until Awake.  Shortly thereafter, Savatage slid up to the no 2 slot.  And that's basically where things stand today, although the TLT QR albums have brought them back onto the list.  (Bands tend to fall off my "favorites" list when they stop making new music--or stop making good music).

Honorable mention goes to Bon Jovi.  They've been somewhere in the top 5 since at least since Slippery When Wet.

1994-2000: Too young to remember
2000-2004: Mostly stuff on Now That's What I Called Music CDs. Basically 90s pop
2004-2005: Sublime, 311
2005-2009: Incubus, Seether, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Video Game Music (mostly Nintendo stuff)
2009-2012: Dream Theater, Incubus, Seether, Nightwish
2012-2014: Dream Theater, Symphony X, Incubus, Muse Ayreon, Epica, Theocracy
2014-2015: Dream Theater, Haken, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Dvorak, Beethoven, Liszt, Saint-Saens, Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Snarky Puppy, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Weather Report,  Art Blakeley, Epica, Mastodon, Opeth, Steven Wilson, Neal Morse, Adele
2015-2018: Dream Theater, Diablo Swing Orchestra, iamthemorning, Ne Obliviscaris, Haken, Opeth, Neal Morse, Pink Floyd, Yes, Steven Wilson, ABBA, Neal Morse, Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, Lorde, Muse, Incubus, Rachmaninov, Mahler, Bach, Beethoven, Dvorak, Chopin, Saint-Saens, Gershwin, Liszt, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Snarky Puppy, Dir en Grey, Agalloch, Arkona, Ayreon, Dir en Grey, CHVRCHES, Epica, Juno Reactor, Justice, jazz played live, etc.

There are three big moments that radically changed what music I listen to:

1) Discovering Dream Theater back in 09, which led to me getting into prog metal and symphonic metal
2) Going to music school and being exposed to all sorts of music, which got me into classical, jazz, and musicals
3) and making a conscious decision to listen to more music and more kinds of music. It led to an explosion in my tastes and now I have a lot more favorite bands to give my attention to.

But overall favorite probably 311 -> Seether/Incubus -> Dream Theater.

89-96: too young, whatever was playing.

96-98: Journey mainly because my father used to play their music.

98-02: Heroes Del Silencio - Band from Spain.

02-06: Disturbed

06-18: Dream theater

Other bands from 06-18: Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Intervals.
Vmadera has evolved into Lonk

I've had a band per decade now.

80s - Rush
90s - Dream Theater
00s - Porcupine Tree
10s - Haken

Can't wait to see who the 20s gives us.   Whoever it is is probably just getting together in their garage right about now.

I really haven't had a favourite band since the mid 90's I don't think - I have morphed from someone who listened the hell outta my favourites to someone who listens to different stuff constantly .   As the music industry has changed with digital and so many more releases my completist/perfectionist streak has taken over and I waste so much time searching for needles in the haystack  ::)

Anyway........in terms of my devotion to a band/being a collector etc......nothing comes close to my attachment to Van Halen.  So although I hardly listen to them any more they will always be "my favourite."

In terms of my listening habits over time , something like this:

1980- 1984 : KISS (and some of my dad' s music - Chicago/Doobie Bros/Dire Straits)
1985-1986: Van Halen/Ozzy/Yngwie
1987 - 1989:  Van Halen/Ozzy/Bon Jovi/Europe/Whitesnake/WASP/Queensryche
1990-1991:  Dokken/WASP/Savatage/Talisman/Queensryche
1992-1994:  Dream Theater/Savatage/Talisman

CCR
It all began with CCR. Major influence from my dad.
As far as my memory goes back, this is the first music known to my mind.

Dire Straits
Discovered them from my parents record collection. Was hooked when I heard the Alchemy album.
I quess I was 7 years old or something.

Queen
Around the age of 9 my uncle showed me the VHS of Live in Budapest.
From that moment Queen was my number 1.

Metallica
While watching TV, they aired a Woodstock '99 special.
Metallica came up and played Creeping Death.
My jaw dropped and I knew this was a lifetime favorite.

Dream Theater
Around 2004 I heard about this drummer who had a monster drumkit. He played in a band called Dream Theater. The first track I ever heard somewhere online was Lie. I bought Awake soon afterwards. Loved it.
My brother good hooked too, and he bought Train Of Thought.
I remember I was listening to the first three tracks. Couldn't believe how awesome this music was.

Trivium/A7X
Metallica and Dream Theater became my 2 lifetime favorites.
Along the way bands like Trivum and A7X came up.
I think A7X's City Of Evil is a masterpiece.
So is Trivium's Crusade.
These 2 albums never bore me. Love them.
Although I kind of lost both of these bands nowadays...

One thing I didn't mention is that my mom and dad are HUGE country fans.  Old school country, like George Jones, Big John Cash, Hank Jr., Waylon, Kris Kristofferson.    One of my real evolutions was coming around to what it was that they liked about that.   There's something about Kris Kristofferson - who can't sing his way out of a jaywalking ticket - and a guitar that is still magical.   I've come to really appreciate that now, in any genre.   A guy (or guys) that can sit with a couple acoustics and make you forget about your life.  Myles Kennedy just did that for me a couple weeks ago in NY.

And I'm seeing 311 in 3 weeks!  I didn't realize there were more Incubus/311 fans on this board.  Might end up going to this jersey shore festival in September to see Incubus too.  That would be my 5th time seeing Incubus and in 3 weeks will be my... oh geeze maybe 17th time seeing 311.

Pre-1994
"Weird Al" Yankovic

1994-1996
Green Day

1996-2003
Metallica

2003-Present Day
Dream Theater

Now, all 4 of those bands are still "favorites." On top of those are 311 (which needs to be shouted out since there's so much love in this thread already... they've been in my top 5 since 1995) and all things Neal Morse (solo, Band, TA, FC, SB, acoustic, prog, kazoo, whatever), which since 2013 has been rising up my top bands list and is realistically #1 at this point. But I just can't bring myself to de-throne DT.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
