Extreme Three Sides to Every Story
« Reply #140 on: March 07, 2018, 09:43:07 AM »
Been listening to this the last couple of days. I am really digging it! Cupids Dead's instrumental breakdown is really intricate. I used to own the album when it came out, a few songs clicked but that was it. So, after all these years, I decide to revisit it. Really solid album. Tons of diversity. I used to own it but sadly sold it down the road so I have been listening to the Youtube playlist which includes a very emotional song "Don't Leave me Alone" I went to look at Amazon Music and even the mp3 version omits that song for some reason. Obviously it isn't a space issue like it was on the CD back in the day.

Nuno is very impressive! Surprised to hear he played with Rhianna on tour. That must be some good money! He says he respects her singing and I am sure he enjoys it as well.

Don’t Leave Me Alone was actually on the cassette version. The album flows better without it imo.

As I think I've said in the past, this is a band that were very hit-and-miss for me throughout the years.  But I really, REALLY enjoyed Saudades, and I feel like their live Take Us Alive release is the definitive collection and performance from them.  Even though I don't connect with a lot of their individual songs for whatever reason, they are an extremely talented band full of outstanding musical and writing talent.  That 2009 performance really showcases their talent and how each and every one of the four members has tremendous stage presence that is just off the charts when you put the four of them together.

I was not as big on their last album, although I like a few of the tracks. Saw the tour, which was fun, back in 2008. They really need to get a new record out and tour. But I really love the first four records a lot.

Always liked and not loved Extreme. I am just not a fan of Gary Cherone's singing. He's technically great, but there's just something that rubs me the wrong way with his vocals. Huge fan of Nuno though, he can do no wrong.

They have always been a good, not great band for me. Nothing blew me away until Waiting For The Punchline. I go to that album fairly often. Of course, I seem to be one of the few that does based on most other comments I have ever seen. The hardcore base didn't seem keen on that one.

I never checked out anything that came after that. Probably should at some point.

That's where Tell Me Something I Don't Know comes from, right?  That song was never even on my radar until I saw them live in 2008, and it completely blew me away and remains a favorite to this day.  I finally got the album after that and remember liking it a fair amount.

Waiting For The Punchline is my favorite Extreme record, closely followed by 3 Sides.

I especially like the dry and in your face guitar sound on Punchline. And I saw them live with Mike Mangini.  :metal

Gary Cherone is touring with Joe Perry, who is doing another leg of touring supporting his solo album.   I'd go see that.

Last I heard, they had 3/4 of an album done, and as Stads said, Gary is now touring with Joe Perry. Who knows. Sucks, to be honest. I had high hopes for another Extreme record, and was hoping it would live up to the first four (not a huge fan of the last one, except for a couple of tunes).

Yay!

They just released Saudades 10 years ago and now a new one is almost finished.
One of the last bands I'm looking forward to new material. Perhaps because they have made only 5 albums since 89.

I heard that Joe "needs his rest" and the tour is postponed (though they're giving refunds, so the right word might be "cancelled").

I wasn't very high on Saudades. I saw the tour in 2008, and that was a great pairing with King's X. But honestly, only a couple of songs from Saudades really got me going. So, I love the fact they have come out now and said the new album will be heavier. It is a shame that they haven't released new music regularly since their initial four records, but I get it. They really aren't a full time band these days. But I'm excited for the disc. Hopefully they'll do a full tour on it. I won't hold my breath, but at least there will be a new CD.

After all these years I still haven't made my mind up about Saudades. When I play it every couple of years, sometimes i'm awestruck and sometimes it bores me to tears. Strange.
I needed years to appreciate Waiting for the Punchline. After the bombastic 3 Sides I initially didn't like the raw sound and approach.

Also: I saw a Rhianna live video and was caught offguard how guitar heavy all those songs were performed without recognizing it was Nuno.

My problem with Saudades and Waiting is....   Pornograffiti and Three Sides.   Every time I warm to the first two, I get all giddy and go back and listen to the second two, and I'm all "WOW" all over again.   I love Extreme, I've seen them twice and I'd go again in a heartbeat, but they are a band that dances a fine line.    The last two haven't really done that well enough for me.

Well, I mean, Porno and III Sides are the band's high water mark. For me, its the first three, with III Sides being the conceptual pinnacle. Then they started to slide down. Punchline is a really good record, but I still would rank it behind the debut. I'd probably go:

1a. III Sides
1b. Porno

(really tough to separate)

2. self-titled

3. Punchline

4. SdR

>>>>I am hoping a heavier direction will lead to a more consistent record, and something that appeals more to me. Maybe even surprise and approach the porno/III sides territory. I know they have it in them.

On the topic of Extreme, does anyone else think that K-Figg isn't all that and a bag of chips? I mean, its not like Paul Geary was the drummer of all drummers. And I mean, their best drummer was of course Mangini, who didn't really do much with them, unfortunately. But for all the touting K-Figg gets, he's just "there," ya know?

I'm sort of with you, though I'd add that they don't NEED Mangini.   They're Van Halen in that regard; they have Nuno, they have the sort of "vocal thing" going on, they basically need guitar and bass to not fuck things up and not clutter up the works.

I agree. III Sides > Porno > rest.

Paul Geary may not be the head honcho of drummers, but thinking about his drumming on the closing long track of III Sides, I can't imagine a better fitting drumming. It grooves and kicks relentlessly. You don't only need the technical skill, you also need the feel and intuition what's best for the song. Ask what you can do for the song and not what the song can do for you, but that's a different discussion.

I'd go Porno > III Sides > Waiting For The Punchline > Extreme > the tortured wailing of the damned > Sausages.

If they're going to serve up another one like the last then I'm not even vaguely interested, which pains me to say. To be fair it's not that bad but considering they went from releasing one of my all time favourite albums to an album where the best I can say for it is that "I don't mind" a few of the songs they've not exactly evolved in a way that works for me  :-\

Always liked and not loved Extreme. I am just not a fan of Gary Cherone's singing. He's technically great, but there's just something that rubs me the wrong way with his vocals. Huge fan of Nuno though, he can do no wrong.

He quacks. I believe that's the problem... on record it's not so bad but live he doesn't sing smoothly at all so that quackiness really comes to the fore.

I'm going to get lambasted here, I'm sure, but while I love his vocals - the man can sing anything - he's a weird guy and there's no real way around that.   I've seen him live twice, I have all the Extreme records, the Van Halen record, and one of his Tribe of Judah records, and for the life of me, there's a vibe there that is vaguely uncomfortable for me.  I can't put my finger on it - and I still love the two "core" records, but there are moments on the others - especially the first and the last - that I just have a hard time connecting with.

Porno - III Sides - s/t -
                                   -
                                      -
                                          -
                                              -
                                                  Saudades - Punchline

Yeah, the last two don’t really exist to me. Punchline was one of the biggest disappointments in music, up there with Hear In The NowFrontier and No Prayer For The Dying

Punchline slays, that dry in-your-face guitar sound is just great and the songs are groovy as fuck.

My ranking would look like this:

1. III Sides/Punchline
3. Pornograffitti
4. Self-titled
5. Saudades

Nuno’s guitar tone and playing alone puts Punchline ahead of the pack for me. After that it’s Three Sides and then Porno. Debut is decent and I thought Suadades was fairly disappointing. It sounded like Dramagods leftovers to me. Except for Interface, which is exactly that and ironically one of the better songs. Although I prefer the original.

Which is not a good thing to me.   I didn't really like Nuno's solo album either.
