PEPE DELUXE! v. Comix Sonix (June 21, 2024)
« on: July 08, 2018, 12:20:58 PM »
As pointed out there and other places, Pepe Deluxe now joins the likes of Marillion, U2, REM, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, In Flames, Nick Cave among many others to have recorded in Berlin's famed Hansa Studios.

2012's Queen of the Wave is all-time favorite of mine, so this only adds more anticipation for their next record which it sounds like it could be coming out finally in the near future (2019?).

Greetings from Berlin!

The legendary Meistersaal aka "The Big Hall by the Wall" of the Hansa Studio. First came Bowie, the came some other artists. Like Iggy Pop, Tangerine Dream, Marillion, Depeche Mode, U2, Nick Cave etc.

The main studio has moved upstairs and some of the rough magic was lost when the Wall came down. Meistersaal's windows aren't covered anymore (see the arrows) and there are no isolation booths, acoustics panels etc. The hall is mainly used for other events but it can still be quickly converted into a recording room and signals routed to the upstairs control room. Last week Hollywood Vampires recorded some stuff there.

I was not a client - just enjoying a studio tour. But I did get a permission to capture the reverb of the room (impulse responses). It is indeed a very nice sounding room! While I'm not a huge fan of commercial studios, it's always fun to collect stories, little ideas, some magic etc. And I got a fun little photo at the end of this visit - posting it tomorrow.

also neat 90 minute documentary shows a lot about Hansa here

The Surrealist Woman is coming out on March 15th, 7" Vinyl all uniquely HAND CUT, and includes a 200 page Graphic Novel

Quote
"Here's the outside & inside cover art of The Surrealist Woman gatefold 7". The barmy "more is more" design of Monsieur Vilunki 3000 meets Manuela Pertega's over 200 pages of "Giraffes on Horseback Salad" graphic novel art. Vilunki kept adding details - even after the artwork had officially been accepted.

The long awaited 5th studio album by Pepe Deluxé.

Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1 is inspired by the golden age of records, and it features the most insane collection of instruments on any album – or anywhere – ever! From the largest to the loudest musical instrument in the world, from Alexander Bell’s human ear recorder to a Tibetan human skull drum, from the oldest synthesizer in the world to a synthesizer designed for group sex, from da Vinci’s drum machine to God’s Trumpet, captured with an occult Soviet machine … This peculiar assemblage contains sounds from dozens of incredible and extraordinary instruments, recorded at various museums, universities, and private collections around the world.

Pepe Deluxé is a Finnish-Swedish intercontinental orchestra, captained by Paul Malmström in New York and James Spectrum in Helsinki. Pepe was founded in 1996 and over the years they have recorded the first ever composition for The Great Stalacpipe Organ, the largest musical instrument in the world, written a UK top 20 hit, remixed artists including Eminem and Tom Jones, composed the music of Angry Birds Go!, been sampled by The Prodigy (twice), won a Cannes Gold Lion for a Levis’ ad tune, composed the Official Theme Song for a Graphic Novel adaptation of the Salvador Dalí and The Marx Brothers film “Giraffes On Horseback Salad”… among other things! Their music has been used on film, games, several TV ad campaigns and also in several charity projects. They are also specialized in working with rare and unusual instruments, and their recent collaborators include Victoria & Albert Museum, the University of Toronto and Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

1st single/video "Big Fat Woodpecker"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a45cQJSrZNY

crazy video which seems to be as much about the recording process as giving the song a visual. There's like 100 things to try and catch and I'm gonna have to spend more time watching this to get even a fraction of them.

New album in 2024?

Considering The Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1 took 9 years to finally get released, this may be premature, but if they are looking to master it soon, the wait may be much less than the last album wait.

certainly possible.

I wonder if the material for this next album was written and recorded during the last album's sessions, per "Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1"..could it be Vol. 2?

Is there a shortcut to hearing something from the teaser?  Last night it wouldn't even load properly, and all I heard were some random ambient noises and pitch-shifted talking, and today now the art gallery seems to work, but it's the same sounds again.

well if you enter, there's the image/painting that says "Earth Boys Are Easy" and the little button next to it on the right "Tap to Interact" and it plays what is like a repeated 15 second clip with some trumpet and chanting.

You can click around that site and see other stuff, but I don't think there's any new music besides that.
