Your favorites of these Pink Floyd songs
« on: July 01, 2018, 09:21:42 PM »
Songs from the Big 4 plus their most beloved pre-Dark Side epic were left off.  More interesting to see how these songs do without the obvious classics dominating the voting.

You can for up to 7.

I went with:

Poles Apart
High Hopes
Sorrow
Keep Talking
Summer '68
One of These Days
When the Tigers Broke Free

When the Tigers Broke Free - Loved this song ever since I first heard in on the film. When I made my own The Wall album, I had to put this at the beginning. I know it doesn't go there, but it kept the rest of the album's track sequence consistent.

High Hopes - Possibly my #1 Floyd song - excluding live releases.

Coming Back to Life - 2nd best song of DB. Followed closely by A Great Day for Freedom.

Wot's... Uh the Deal? - My favorite pre-Echoes song. Even holds up with the rest of their material. Glad David brought it back for some of his solo tours.

Honorable Mentions:
Sorrow
On The Turning Away
These two songs kill on Delicate Sound of Thunder, but they don't sound as powerful on AMLoR so I hesitate to give them votes here.

Arnold Layne. Never thought this song was any good till David's performance with David Bowie. Somehow a guy I don't care sharing vocals on a song I don't like made it awesome.

I would have added "Let There Be More Light" - the first hint of the later, 'classic' Floyd sound - and perhaps something from More, but I went with:

Fearless
Fletcher Memorial Home (I LOVE The Final Cut)
Astronomy Domine
Interstellar Overdrive
The Final Cut (The "...there's a kid who had a big hallucination..." part is one of my favorite melodies in the Floyd catalog)
Atom Heart Mother (perhaps my favorite song on the list, or one of two with Fearless)
Wot's... uh the Deal? (The second song I've ever wanted to listen to just because of the title, and loved it, love it to this day)

Superb choice of songs.

Summer '68, one of my favourite songs by any artist.
Atom Heart Mother
When the Tigers Broke Free
One of These Days
High Hopes
The Final Cut
Learning to Fly

They could arguably crack Pink Floyd Top 20 even outside the poll limitations.

:lol I'm the only one who voted for "Careful With That Axe, Eugene".  Definitely a song of its time, the appeal of which is nearly impossible to explain to someone not of that time, such as I am.  But that's okay.  I love that tune and kids today just don't understand.

"Interstellar Overdrive" is the other longish one from the early days that I really like.

"Free Four" because it's a rare upbeat Floyd song, regardless of the lyrics.

"One of these Days"/"Fearless" has been my favorite opening one-two punch since Meddle.  I know most of you were thinking of the live version (of OOTD) when you voted for it, because I've seen the discussions a few times, but once again, I fell in love with the originals long, long ago.

Nope.

Keep Talking
Heart of the Sun
Careful, Eugene
One of These Days
Fearless (though I forgot to select it in the poll)

Keep Talking is included more on the basis of the liver versions than the studio.

Every song here is great (Floyd are my favourite band), but I've gone with:

1. Atom Heart Mother (a top 10 PF track)
2. The Fletcher Memorial Home
3. The Final Cut
4. High Hopes
5. Sorrow (the Pulse live version is incredible, especially with the light show)
6. Poles Apart
7. One Of These Days

Free Four, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Careful With That Axe, Eugene (For Controls and this one I prefer the Live at Pompeii versions to the studio versions), Learning to Fly, A Saucerful of Secrets, One of These Days (I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces) (again, prefer the Pompeii version, but I don't mind the studio version on this one - the Pompeii version is cool in that you see Nick Mason lose a drumstick but not the beat), Wot's.. Uh, the Deal? (REALLY dig the Obscured By Clouds album)

I almost went with Careful with that Axe. It's definitely a favorite of mine from the early Floyd stuff.
