Lethean's Laid Back Roulette (Final round results!!!)
« on: July 01, 2018, 12:27:07 PM »
Hi everyone. This is my first roulette, so we'll see how it goes.  I called it laid back not because I won't hound you for submissions if you are late :), but because of the lack of themes or eliminations, and also my comments on the submissions will probably be more laid back than a lot of what I've read.  Usually something resonates with me or it doesn't and I don't have a list of reasons that question the band's artistic choices to explain why.  I will try to give the best feedback I can, and liking/disliking the vocals will be part of it because that's an easy one.  :)  I'm not a musician and I usually don't care about "production," "the mix," "loudness wars," or things like that.  It'll be, do I like the vocals, do I like the melodies, is there a cool little part here that makes me want to hear it again, am I moved by it, do I find it a chore and can't wait until it is over, does the constant double bass drumming make me want to throw myself from a cliff, etc.

In the roulette thread, I joked that I was going to call it Lethean's Sad Music Roulette, but you don't have to send sad music.  Some of my favorites (especially Katatonia, Leprous, Riverside) have been described as on the sad, dark, depressing side, but listening to them makes me happy, whereas often, music that is described as "happy" makes me irritated.  I love Angra though, and they are on the happier side, so it all depends.

My tastes:

Mostly in the metal arena but I like other music as well.  You're welcome to send whatever you want, but I would really prefer you to avoid country, rap, and hip hop.  I used to exchange music with dorm mates and heard enough to know that at best - it just doesn't move me, and it worst, it grates on me.  Also - the way Kattelox described some of the music in his roulette made me want to throw up. :)  Sugary, flowery, sweet, etc.  I'm not sure if I'd actually dislike the music because it might not sound that way to me, so there's that. :)  For example, I love Anathema, so if he would describe Anathema that way, it might be fine.  (I definitely wouldn't, however).  They're on the lighter side of what I listen to but there's an intensity to them that I like.

Prog metal is my most listened to genre, I like some prog rock but find a lot of it uninteresting to me, I like a fair amount of power metal but also dislike a lot of it, I like Iron Maiden and Dio but a lot of bands that are compared to them miss the mark for me.  It's hard to say why I like one band but not another.  I really dislike harsh vocals - Kattelox might be surprised since I sent him an album with harsh vocals during his roulette (Solefald), but it's a very rare exception rather than the rule.  I really hate the more guttural death metal vocals and even Opeth, who everyone else who doesn't like harsh vocals likes, falls into that category.  I am more likely to tolerate vocals like those in Solefald or Borknagar (and those bands also have clean vocals too).  I've also been told that I don't like music that is too blues based in case that helps anyone.

Rules:
8 rounds, no themes, no eliminations.  If everyone sends me 20 minute songs in the first round I might impose a time limit, but for now I'll leave it open.  Once an artist is sent, that artist is banned for the rest of the roulette.  I'll take duplicate submissions in the same round.  I'm stealing an idea from Elite by scoring the songs in each round against each other.  So 1 will be my favorite song of the round, 2 is the 2nd favorite, etc.  I reserve the right to have ties if I can't decide between 2 songs. Whoever ends up with the lowest score at the end of round 8 wins.
Also, to discourage people from sending me music that I'm likely to hate (Stadler), here's an incentive for the top 3 scores:

3rd place - choose an album for me to listen to; the album has to contain a song you sent me that I liked
2nd place - choose 2 albums for me to listen to - one has to contain a song you sent me that I liked, and the other has to contain a song you sent me, whether I liked it or not
1st place - choose 3 albums for me to listen to; same rules as 2nd place for 2 of the albums, and for the 3rd album it doesn't have to be from the roulette.  Rap and country are banned from this, however, unless you sent me something in the roulette that I actually liked.

Now - I won't listen to these albums right away (will want some time to focus on ProgPower USA bands), but I will listen to them and will post my thoughts before the next DT album is released at the latest. :)

Edit:
How to submit - youtube would be great, send me a link to a file if your song isn't on youtube.  I don't use Spotify or other such services.  (Sorry for any inconvenience).

Participants:

There will be 8-10 participants, and I'd everyone to submit the first round by Friday (07-06) - if can send on Thursday, great.  I'm going to try to do round 1 somewhat quickly and have the results by Tuesday, then get on a normal Monday submission schedule after that.

There are reserved spots for those who said they would like to participate in the roulette thread - please confirm your participation or let me know if you'd rather sit this one out:

1. Kattelox

3. Puppies on Acid
4. Parama
5. Sacul
6. Jingle Boy

Banned List:

Bands in green are my most played.  Anything with an x means I only have 1 album by that band.  Anything with a d is something that I have heard and either deleted the mp3s ordecided I didn't like it after playing on youtube.  So if you want, you can try to send me something from a band with an x or d and if I haven't heard it already, I'll give it a listen.  If I have heard it, I'll let you know you have to pick something else.  I'd probably recommend staying away from the deleted bands because usually I delete them for a reason, like "hated the vocals" or "meh" etc, but sometimes I just gave them a very cursory listen and moved on to save time, so it's up to you if you want to try.

Also - the way Kattelox described some of the music in his roulette made me want to throw up.

Get ready to vom, because I am going to drown you in power metal  :lol

Really looking forward to this and I have some great ideas to send and if anyone steals them, I will find you. :censored  :lol

I don't think it was actually power metal you were talking about, but I didn't listen to the other stuff in case people wanted to reuse submissions.

Stadler - I'm definitely expecting you to send me some older prog. I love Rush, but when I've heard from Yes and others never made me want to keep going, but I also know that there is a lot that I haven't heard.

To be honest, the more I see power metal fans talk, the more I realize I hate power metal, so you're probably not actually going to get a lot. Maybe 2-3 artists I'm super passionate about.  I'm plotting my half-assed map through this roulette now.

In like Flynn.

Gonna have to go scrounging around for the right stuff.

I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Wow I didn't even catch this until you quoted it, Chad - shame as I was debating several Jorn solo tracks to send. I LOVE Jorn's body of work so that's sad to hear Lethean isn't a fan.

Also, what do artists with a "b" (Avantasia) mean?

Also, I don't think I've ever seen Prototype or Superior mentioned at DTF.   :tup

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Hang on, let me roll up on the sidewalk and take a look!     Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban... check!  I'm in!

Haha, seriously, I'm in.   I'll probably send tomorrow, I want to think about it a bit.

I'm not a big fan of Prototype but was just listening to Superior's Ultima Ratio this week.   Underrated band

Sorry - Avantasia is just plain banned; I removed the "b."  Superior - love Behind and Ultima Ratio.  Prototype - according to my notes, I didn't like the vocals, but I really don't remember anything about them.

Anything with Jorn Lande - Jorn Lande is to Lethean as Chris Cornell is to Kattelox

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
Definitely a bad thing.  Jorn is just one of those singers that sure, I recognize he's good, but I don't like him.

Rhapsody d

Nice try... they're still coming.  :lol

You know I didn't even realize that was there.  When I get back home I'll see which album it is.

I removed Rhapsody; it was Triumph or Agony but I never listened to it; I just had it on my hard drive and it got removed during a purge after I'd seen them live (Fabio version) and wasn't into it.  So, whatever they played when Voyager opened for them I wasn't really into, if that helps at all.  Also, I didn't like the Luca Turilli version either when I saw them at ProgPower, but I did comment on how good the singer was.  There was nothing objectionable about either show, and it's certainly possible that I wasn't in the right frame of mind not being familiar with their music at all.

I'll be sending mine shortly.  Oooh, I'm so pumped.    And no, I'm not going to make a mockery of this and just try to get Lethean to poke his ears out with a fork.   But I might try to go with some of the "x"'s and "d"'s to share deeper tracks that he might not have heard, or that might be a step apart from the stuff already likely heard.     All in good faith, of course, and all in good fun.  Thankfully, my 401(k) is not tied to my performance in these roulettes, but I love playing in them and know if I go too far off the reservation, I'm not going to be invited back.  That's the driver for me.

I'll probably be joining you for a few rounds in sending older stuff. The more I think about this the more I'm entertaining the idea of sending mostly non-metal songs :)

Nekov and Orcus haven't confirmed yet - if they don't, TAC is in first and then you.
