The albums you wish had existed
« on: June 05, 2018, 07:55:49 AM »
Different idea (maybe) for a discussion, in the guise of a poll to spark it up.

Music history is full of legendary bands and likewise legendary line-ups, but we all know how musical differences, egos and sometimes even tragedy can tear apart a line up that never reforms again, or does so only 20 years later.

So I tried to think of big and historical line-ups cut short too soon, so hence the question: which additional album, that never came to be because the band split up or changed or someone died, you wish had existed? what's your biggest musical regret in the sense of "oh if only this band had stayed together a little while longer"?

Four choices to make it difficult. The poll is anyway an excuse to discuss albums that fate prevented to exist. I hope the inclusion of Dream Theater does not turn this into a keyboardists / drummers feud  :D
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Posh Spice?

Ozzy with Randy is the obvious choice for me.  I put Ozzy with Sabbath, Deep Purple Post TBRO (I LOVE that album, by the way) with Blackmore, and ...  I forget.  EDIT:  Fifth Deep Purple album.

I would add:
- Post-Clutching Marillion album with Fish.
- Post Tormato Yes album with Wakeman.
- Post Slide It In Whitesnake album with, uh, the Slide It In lineup.
- Velvet Revolver album with Myles Kennedy.
- Post 1984 Van Halen album with Roth.
- Post A Different Kind of Truth Van Halen album with Roth.
- Post Dig Out Your Soul Oasis album with Noel and Liam.
- Post Built To Destroy MSG album with Gary Barden.

I could do this all day, just about.

Controversial statement:  DT5 with Sherinian.  Not that I would trade it for what we got.  I wouldn't.  But in an alternate universe, I would love to hear what they would have done had they expanded upon Metropolis II with Derek helping write the tunes.

Queensryche follow-up to HITNF had EMI not gone under.
Also, follow-up to Q2K had Kelly Gray stayed in the band at that point.

Whitesnake follow-up to 1987 had Sykes stayed.

Very much on board with that one .

Would've really liked another Ozzy album with Jake E Lee too.

I would love to say Post Mob Rules Sabbath with Dio, but he followed that up with Holy Diver and Last In Line. I actually wish he and Vivian hadn't had a falling out. Would love to have gotten more out of that original Dio lineup.

I voted for:

Ozzy with Randy
DT with Mike

I'd like to add:

RHCP with Dave Navarro:  I'd love to see what came next for them with Dave. But on the same note Californication was such a massive phenomenon it's hard to want to see that.  Alternate Universe type scenario... really.

Marillion with Fish (already mentioned)
Megadeth with Marty Friedman (before the reunion)
Metallica: if they kept Mustaine
Metallica: If Cliff hadn't died
Sepultura: if Max and Igor hadn't left
GWAR: if Brockie hadn't died
Operation Ivy: If they hadn't broken up

Nothing on that list actually.  I might have picked Iron Maiden but ultimately I think his leaving for a while was probably for the best, and Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding might not have happened otherwise.

RAINBOW - Fourth album with Dio
HEAVEN AND HELL - Second album after The Devil You Know
QUEEN - Full post Innuendo album with Freddie
DREAM THEATER - DT11 with Mike Portnoy

Sadly, two of those are due to untimely deaths. I almost went with Bon which would have made three.

I could have chose other but I could go on for days adding to the list.

I would love to say Post Mob Rules Sabbath with Dio, but he followed that up with Holy Diver and Last In Line. I actually wish he and Vivian hadn't had a falling out. Would love to have gotten more out of that original Dio lineup.

If you think about it, it was almost magical how everything fell into place for Dio.

His band, Elf, opened for Deep Purple just as they were about to experience turmoil, so he hooked up with Blackmore to form Rainbow.

Then he left after three albums - a crying shame because Dio and Blackmore together where gold, actually more than gold, they were golden platinum and sheer brilliance, but he left just at the right time to join with Iommi and do the two Sabbath albums, and right after he quit, he was in a position to do Holy Diver.

So in a way I regret that all these endeavors didn't last, but... one project going on more would have ruled out the other.

Nothing on that list actually.  I might have picked Iron Maiden but ultimately I think his leaving for a while was probably for the best, and Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding might not have happened otherwise.

I agree with Maiden. A post Fear of the Dark album with Bruce would have not been great, and Bruce leaving let us have his solo carrer and then he returned anyway with the proper conditions to kickstart a reunion that lasts to this day.

And I forgot about Helloween. Yeah, another Hansen / Kiske / Weikath album in their glory days would have been awesome.

Interesting topic.  I went with:

Rainbow - fourth album with Dio
Black Sabbath - follow up to Mob Rules ("The Mob Rules" is the song...the album has no "The") with Dio
Judas Priest - post-Painkiller album with Halford
Other:  Rush - post-Signals album with Terry Brown producing

The thing with a lot of these is that you have to consider what you'd be getting.  Additional Beatles, Zeppelin and Sabbath with Ozzy albums probably would have been terrible because of personality comments and drugs/alcohol.

A third Ozzy album with Rhoads would probably be my fifth selection.

Maiden was trending downward when Bruce left (although FotD was a bit better than NPftD, so maybe).

Another DT album with Moore?  Maybe.  Another DT album with MP?  After SC and BC&SL?  No thanks.

Rainbow was never better than with Dio, so more of that would've been great if Dio staying would have tempered Rainbow's detour into a more commercial style somewhat.

Personality conflicts between Dio, Iommi and Butler would have made another Sabbath album with Dio a bit iffy, but I don't think it would have affected the final product.

Priest was on a HUGE upswing after Ram It Down and Painkiller, so more of that would have been great.

The Rush one is a no-brainer for me.  The decision to stop working with Broon was the single worst decision Rush ever made.

I disagree with the Rainbow comment.  I actually like and even sometimes prefer the Joe Lynn Turner years.   "Fire Dance" and "Power" are as good as anything in the catalogue (well, nothing touches Stargazer, but after that...).

Yes and Yes!

And, speaking of Yes...

- Post Tormato Yes album with Wakeman.
- Post Slide It In Whitesnake album with, uh, the Slide It In lineup.

I agree with both of these!

I like the Turner years too, but they can't touch the three Dio albums (although maybe JLT never did anything as silly as "Do You Close Your Eyes").

Also:
I wonder what Genesis would have come up with after Peter left.

Somebody posted Yes - Post Tormato, I actually thought about that too. But that would have meant that Drama wouldn't exist, plus the Paris sessions demos are .. well, .. let's day I'm glad Drama exists :)
But I WOULD have love to hear Keys To Ascension with the production of Fly From Here.

That's an interesting one. I really liked Revenge. They kind of did a follow-up with Carnival of Souls, which I also really like. That was a stylistic change from Revenge, though. More grunge and sludgy.

This was the project he was working on when he passed. I read an incredible fiction novel called Glimpses by Lewis Shiner that went into depth about what the album was supposed to be.

I actually only picked the Heaven And Hell option.

All of the other ones are conclusions of chapters, and most of them were a fine way to put an end to an era. Either that, or they weren't too great, so why follow them up? My pick is the only one where I feel like we really could have used one more record.

Rainbow with Dio

Don't care much about others, but would've liked to check out the next Heaven and Hell album, next DT with Kevin Moore and yeah, Helloween after Keeper pt. 2 with Kai.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.
