Your favorites of these Dream Theater songs - Part 3
« on: May 30, 2018, 06:39:08 PM »
The third of a handful of polls I will do like this about Dream Theater songs (no duplicates by other users, please). :)

I made this one a little more difficult. ;)

You can vote for up to 7.

I went with:

Voices
Scarred
Learning to Live
Take the Time
Metropolis
Erotomania

Lots of great songs on this list, although this was the easiest of the 3 polls for me so far, given that many of my favorite tracks are on the list, and several that are pretty low on my list. Here's what I went with:
The Mirror
Blind Faith
Home
The Glass Prison
Disappear
Scarred
Learning to Live

Honorable mention to Voices, Finally Free and The Great Debate.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Some tough picks to leave out of mine but went with:

Take The Time
6:00
Disappear
Surrounded
Solitary Shell
Learning To Live
Under A Glass Moon

Some of DT's best moments are in this list...
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Great selection of songs here, though it was the easiest poll of the 3 for me too. 7 was just the perfect number for my real highest tier of songs - most of the rest are really good too, but just not quite on the same level.

Learning to Live
Metropolis
Take the Time
Under a Glass Moon
Fatal Tragedy
Voices
The Glass Prison

I picked 5 of the first 7, but it got a little easier after that.

Take the Time
Fatal Tragedy
Blind Faith
Metropolis
Home
Scarred
Learning to Live

Four of these songs (Metropolis, Scarred, LtL and Home) would probably make my list of top 10 DT songs.  Almost everything else on this list is very good to great, with the glaring exceptions being The Mirror and The Great Debate (both of which probably would be on a bottom 10 list).

This poll had more of my top 10 or near-top 10, so it was difficult to decide what NOT to pick.  I suspect I am one of the few who left off LTL, but it would have been my next pick if not for the ones I did choose:
-The Mirror
-Metropolis
-Home
-The Glass Prison
-Disappear
-Misunderstood
-Scarred

I notice that a Take the Time got a lot of votes.  For me, that song is near the bottom of this list of options.

Take The Time is an amazing song. There's nothing else like it in DT's catalog at all, and I think it has some of James's best vocal parts. It has such a cool, smooth sound from start to finish. Damn, I'm gonna go listen to it again now  :metal

Seems like my picks are among the favorites. Definitely no bottom-feeders in this list. Any band would be happy to have just these songs and nothing else in their catalog.

Fatal Tragedy
Blind Faith
Finally Free
Disappear
Voices
Misunderstood
Learning to Live

I sometimes lump Take the Time in with Metropolis and Pull Me Under. They are tremendous songs that help make I&W the landmark album it was 25 years ago and still is today. And while the album and its songs have aged well, I don't find myself drawn to listening to individual tracks as I do with other DT albums. It's more of a "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

Yes.  And that is one of the reasons why I&W is a "middle-of-the-pack" album rather than a top 3 or 4 album.
