What? Every word he says was right. That's how he experiences the album.

Unless you're saying he truly loves the album, then maybe.

Apparently, I'm wrong to agree with mikey that there's a lot of good stuff on the album and that that's a shame, I'm wrong in that I listened to the album and just couldn't get into it, and I'm wrong saying that I'm looking forward to the next album.

Holy shit!!  :omg:  I actually like an album I thought was boring all this time, and I'm not looking forward to the next album because it will probably be more like the Dream Theater I thought I loved (but must have been wrong about that, too)!

For that reason, I really do look forward to this next album and hopefully a return to form, or perhaps even a new and improved Dream Theater.

This part...of course it'll be a return to form. The Astonishing was a fun project. The only logical thing to do really is what exactly they are doing now. All together in one room, JP likely doesn't want to write lyrics this time as much. Letting the others write.

I'm really excited for this album and can't wait for that single to be released.

I think one way to deal with the down time is to make an abridged version. I love the entire thing, but honestly, I could cut out half and enjoy it even more. My 15 song abridged version is as good as anything, IMO. ;D
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Just seen the video, not sure he actually says more than one from JLB, just says James has finished his lyrics doesn’t he? Sounds like JM is only one who hasn’t finished anyway which fits with reports from years ago which indicated his lyrics always took some work to fit into a song based format. It’s worth the effort though if we get another Learning To Live, Breaking All Illusions or Trial Of Tears.

James said way earlier that he was working on lyrics for a couple songs.
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

Yes, see here: https://twitter.com/jameslabrie/status/1012813144140365824

Seeing that tweet again makes me think that they were up to the lyrics after a month in studio already, which is nice!! And it also reminded me of that "Hidden by Design" thing, which may be in the album somehow (the title maybe?). That was something that came up no DT's Facebook page and it's reoccurring on the Treasure Hunt. Maybe it's nothing, but it sounds like a cool concept.

Might be the album title but it's certainly not the master puzzle code. We'll see how it plays out.

My bet is that it could be part of the concept Mangini brought it, that was later developed into the song with his lyrics. Sounds like a title or section of a big epic song, or even the album title.

I thought about that at one point, just putting the songs I really like onto the iPod, so I can play them and enjoy them.  But that would mean I'd have to invest another three or four hours, minimum.  2.5 to listen to it all again, then at least another hour or so playing certain tracks again, deciding which ones to keep, etc.  In the end, I just blew it off, partly because of the time/effort involved, and partly because I knew that even then, I still probably wouldn't listen to it.  When I feel like listening to Dream Theater, I have several albums to choose from that I already know I'll enjoy more.

I think it's a common occurence that threads can take detours and tangents. I observed that lots of times when reading along. It's the DTF way. Back on topic: Did Jordan already record his parts?

Yeah, Yeah, I know, I've been on the forum for 10+ years, but it's a thread about the new album. If people want to tell to what extent they don't like TA, they can go to the dedicated thread. Just my 2 cents.

Back to topic, don't know for the keys, but guitar tracking is done :

My anticipation for the next album is increased by my disappointment in the last one.  I found it interesting that I'd literally forgotten about it and shared a few sentences.  It wasn't meant to be a detour, but these things happen.

Yeah, I managed to see it. Mixed feelings. I get MP's posture on posting a ""friendly"" comment, but it's just nuts the way some people reacted in JP's post.

"Yeah...MP...the band is not the same without you"
"DT lost its soul with you!"

That cannot be healthy in any way to JP or MP, I think. Oh well, I guess he knows his social media.

Harsh and bs..

I mean....I get that can upset some folks but seriously......you have a guy who admittedly does not practice or make any effort to improve himself in his craft.......and you have a guy who continually practices to find new fills/sounds etc etc.

MP is an incredible drummer....there's no disputing it. He's unreal and I love to listen to the dude. But the evidence just doesn't lie....especially recent evidence.

Pretty much. MP is solid but he’s been stagnant and repetitive since Train of Thought. The fact that he just records the first thing that he comes up with shows that he’s just interested in getting the drums done rather than spending the time to create inventive drum parts. It’s nice that DT has a drummer that’s actually dedicated to creating great drum parts.

Evidence?.. I don't need more evidence than having listened to the DT albums you are referring to (from ToT until BC&SL).. It's childish and ridiculous saying that in all of those albums and the ones he has made through all these years until Psychotic Symphony have "six fills".. I mean, except you're really trying to judge a musician's skill watching instagram's videos (and apparently you are)..

Also, I don't know what Mangini has to do with "your" (it's actually very old and repetitive) opinion of MP doing the same fills over and over again.. I'm just happy I did listen to his drumming..

you're really trying to judge a musician's skill watching instagram's videos (and apparently you are)..

Those were examples of very recent studio sessions of both drummers. One stands out as fresh....one stands out as the 'same ol' same ol''

Also, I don't know what Mangini has to do with "your" (it's actually very old and repetitive) opinion of MP doing the same fills over and over again.. I'm just happy I did listen to his drumming..

It's an 'old and repetitive' criticism of MP because it's an accurate one. Even the albums you mentioned do little to argue against that criticism.

Listen....like I said....I love to listen to MP drum. Similitude of a Dream was a freaking masterpiece IMO and MP's drumming was great in it. Neal does a fantastic job of writing and arranging that music to fit and suite MP's playing.

But you cannot have an honest listen to 'The Astonishing' and listen to the insane things Mangini does on that album then listen to SOAD and tell me that one drummer doesn't stand out against the other. It's less of a knock on MP than it is just an outright compliment to Mangini for always improving himself and keeping his 'chops' up to date and honed.
