No.  Even aside from the fact that it is obvious from the video that he is recording an actual part of a song, the caption reads:
QuoteHere's Mike in the studio recording a short proggy bit from the new album. Yes, that will be the album take and his reward will be some delicious BBQ chicken courtesy of chef JP!

Woops, I hadn't checked the new video yet when I posted this. I was talking about the first video. My bad xD

It sounds very cool! What surprised me is how melodic/proggy it is, since they've said they're working on a heavy album. Looks like it'll be a very balanced album between prog and heavy elements :hefdaddy

Yes, all that just from a single snippet :P

RoeDent

Dream Theater fans...able to make a judgment on an album based entirely on 20 seconds or so of music. Still...cool little segment. I would also like chicken thighs please.

Indeed! of course to make assumptions about this clip is like thinking Black Clouds was ballad heavy by hearing the "Could this be the end" snippet in the little snippet that was released before the album, but it sounds like they concentrated on melody as you said and didn't for a chugga chugga wankfest. Sounds cool!

TheLordOfTheStrings

I really really hope there's a version of the album with a little making of DT14 docu.

Ninjabait

Tbh that little proggy excerpt really sounds more like something I'd expect from a JR solo album or LTE. Has me kind of intrigued for the new album

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I love JR's solo albums and LTE so that's a good sign.

Cool Chris

Ugh, please not anything like LTE. Can't comment of any of Jordan's solo work.

Schurftkut

check out his album Rhythm of Time! standout tracks for me are Insectsamongus and Ra

Orbert

RaiseTheKnife

The clip does remind me of Rhythm of Time, and then leads into a variation of The Simpsons theme.

What I enjoyed about the clip...

It sounds amazing, it has that Inside Out record label feel to it. Meaning Inside Out lets their artists have full control and feel of their sound.

I felt, Since DT signed to RoadRunner they were appealing to that crowd. I feel DT belongs on Inside Out label now.

DoctorAction

After listening to it a couple more times it reminds me of Spock's Beard.   :)

Madman Shepherd

To be honest it sounds like the style of Dream Theater that I'm not into as much. I was hoping for something more raw and heavy but at the same time almost every Dream Theater song has moments that I'm not into but I like the overall product. Either way it actually makes me more excited than I was just because it's great to hear something.

Peter Mc

Just sounds to me like a typical crazy instrumental passage that DT have always done.

GandL

I really liked what I heard in that snippet  :metal

100% Agree!

bill1971

Seeing the new clip has left me with a ton of new intriguing questions such as, what dd he season the chicken with and what sides will be served?

Chino

Has anyone played the clip backwards to see if they're hiding anything?

YtseJamittaja

Yeah, it sayed "eat my wings and steaks" in morse code

Stewie

That clip sounds awesome. Can't wait to hear more.

RMGadelha

I wonder if we're gonna get updates from the studio at a fixed rate (like one per week) or if it's gonna be random. I already can't wait for the next one  :metal

Drum tracking has finished.  Plus another cool heavy snippet from the album. Mega!  :metal

Thanks for link! Loved that heavy riff and MM's tone!

utopiarun

Let's pray the snare "cracks" like that once it's all produced.

Madman Shepherd

ok, now that sounds badass.  Definitely can deal with the non preferable stuff like the first proggy bit they shared if I can get more stuff like this

RMGadelha

I love how Dream Theater posts new videos after I ask innocent questions. I better start doing it more often.  :lol
With that said, what comes next typically? Bass?

How does JP find the time to be so great at so many things:  Guitar/Musician.  Master Chef.  Dad.  Gym.  Laundry.

What a great role model.

Don't forget beard master and grizzly bear.

erwinrafael

who was playing the drums while Mangini and JP was talking? Or was that an audio of recorded drums?

Cyclopssss

Probably playback yeah. Also, that's a LOT of cracken.

It's what he's already recorded. It's better to listen to that to count you in, instead of just a metronome count, especially if you're tracking a part that's like right in the middle of a musical section.
