Lethean

So wait.... you cut Solefald from your roulette, and then sent me a band and told me they sound like Solefald?   Hmm.....

Crow

it's more like solefald reminds me of thy catafalque but not as good

but also like i said in my solefald writeup, i don't even listen to most other thy catafalque records anymore, just sgurr

Lethean

I (obviously) haven't heard enough Thy Catafalque to comment about which is better.  I will say that Solefald is all over the map for me; some of it I love (especially Norrøn livskunst) and some I don't.  Almost all of it is a hard listen but sometimes it pays off.

here it is

#1: Oh man, this is literally right up my alley in terms of stuff I've been into recently, I'm almost willing to just save this & call it the round winner outright. Back half wasn't as strong as the front half but it was still pretty good the whole way through.

#2: Opposite of the last one, the first half didn't really grab me much but there was a lot of great stuff in the back half & overall ended up liking this more than I expected.

#3: This one's... gonna be tough, I think, but it's interesting for sure. I don't have a ton else to say about it other than that I did enjoy it, I feel like this one is going to only get better on relistens too.

#4: Not that there was anything wrong with this one, but compared to the others this round, this didn't really grab me. It's pleasant enough, absolutely, but with competition this strong simply being "pleasant enough" likely isn't going to cut it, we'll see if it grows on me though.

I actually sent the band that you really like according to your roulette's banlist. Curious if the album I picked is your least favourite too. :)

Uh oh, Evermind sent The Faceless - Autotheism. I'm not sure how that will go over with Parama. It's definitely one of their best albums, perhaps just slightly behind Planetary Duality.

I wanted a lot of cleans to go with aggressive growls and Autotheism is pretty good at this, lots of clean Keene vocals.

You know, I actually was surprised to do that well in your roulette, but looking at my list for Parama and your banned list, there's a lot of overlap there. Falls of Rauros, The Faceless, Ultar etc.

Yeah, despite being cut in the first round, Parama and I seem to have fairly similar tastes in music.

interestingly, almost everyone left has won a round, except Evermind who aaaaalmost won round 1. c'mon dude it's your turn to shine this round  :metal

Well. Yeah. In this round this album just stands head and shoulders above the rest. For some reason I used to think this band was some lame deathcore band? I think I listened to their album from last year but not sure on that one, but I didn't follow up on it if I did, obviously. But yeah, this is... right up the alley of the kind of stuff I've been digging lately, more death-metal-infused prog metal than the other way around. In general stuff I like is that there's a decent melodic focus here rather than chuggy heavy riffing, and the chords they use a lot are more flavorful, punchy chords that I also tend to like. The opener is a huge epic thing split into three parts in a way that makes me think of Slice the Cake, too, they're all distinct but flow together pretty well, that third part also ups the weirdness ante but never feels overbearing about it. I said on first listen I didn't like the back half as much as the front half but really I think my only complaint is the two short tracks right before the closer are both completely pointless and kind of kill the momentum of the album a little? But no, everything else here I like or love, most likely one to follow up on for sure.

Evermind with The Faceless – Autotheism, you can never escape mwahaha

Well crap. I could have sent The Faceless as well, but didn't because I don't really like the album I own from them myself.

The title track is amazing, but I think In Becoming a Ghost is their best proggy album and Planetary Duality is their timeless classic. They did play Autotheism's title track this year when I saw them so I'm a happy man, and Michael Keene didn't even go off stage before the end of the set so it was like a perfect show for The Faceless' standards.

King Puppies and the Acid Guppies

Well definitely check out Planetary Duality then. I think it's their best album. Autotheism is a very close second though. In Becoming a Ghost was.....not exactly horrible, but not nearly as good as their other albums. Akeldama is also good, but it had a rotating list of musicians and they were trying to find their sound, so it isn't as consistent.
