Parama's Disastrous Roulette v3 (The End (not the band))

Parama’s Roulette v3

Album roulettes and elimination roulettes are the new hip trends and I’ve already done an elimination roulette in the past but I’m also going to do one again but this time with albums, because it’s way easier for me this way.

Roulette Structure:
8 players max, will do an elimination if there is more interest than player slots. Though I have a shortlist of people who 1. I know I have compatible tastes with 2. Did not play in my last roulette and those people have reserved slots if they want to join the roulette. Though I’m not saying who those players are here.

Rules:
1. Send albums via PM. I’d prefer mp3 downloads but youtube links are fine. Spotify links are also allowed but I would prefer you send on a platform with gapless playback (or where I can create gapless playback by downloading mp3s).
2. The banned list is color-coded for your convenience.
Red means bands I have heard enough from to know I dislike them in general.
Orange means bands I don’t actively listen to or own music from, but find generally alright.
Teal means bands I have looked into and plan to get an album from, or have an album but haven’t listened to extensively yet.
Yellow means bands I like and own music from but don’t quite love.
Green means one of my favorites.
3. In the interest of variety, if the same artist is sent multiple times in one round, only the first two submissions of the artist will be accepted. If the same album is sent by multiple people, only the first submission will be accepted.
4. I reserve the right to reject any song or artist not on the banlist, most likely because I either know the specific song or the band probably should be on my banlist (which I will update if so).
5. The maximum album length is 80 minutes flat, the length of a single CD album. Nothing longer is allowed. I would recommend not pushing too far past 60 minutes. The longer an album, the more likely it is to invoke…
6. The Instant Elimination Rule: If I cannot bring myself to finish an album on the first listen, the person who submitted it is instantly eliminated and the rest of the round proceeds as normal. I don’t think it’s fair to other participants to waste their good albums on rounds with a complete dud of an album and as well I value my time too much to sit through a bad album even once much less multiple times. I wouldn’t invoke this kind of rule in a song roulette but it’s entirely reasonable in an album roulette, IMO.

Tastes:
I think I’m going to keep this brief this time as I don’t get the impression many people read this anyways.

I’ve actually recently been testing out a more quantitative rating system for albums that focuses on the aspects of music I enjoy the most, and the best albums tend to score highly in at least two to three of these, if not more.

Intensity: Covers both how literally heavy the music is as well as how emotionally intense it is; for metal these tend to go hand in hand but for other genres that’s obviously not the case; the point though is that I like music that evokes strong feelings from me, whether they be strong feelings of sadness or music that sounds like it wants to eviscerate me. I don’t like angry music much, though.

Memorability: Possibly the most important one here. If a song doesn’t have something to get stuck in my head, it’s gonna be hard to really care about it in the long run. This can be a catchy chorus, an excellent riff, a great bassline, basically anything. I want music that forces itself to play back on repeat in my head all day and makes me want to listen to it more as a result.

Technicality: Obviously this doesn’t apply to all genres of music, but being technically interesting is almost absolutely a requirement for being one of my favorite albums, I want music that I can pick apart and continue to find new and interesting details about even after a dozen listens or more. Pushing this too far though almost always tends to come at the expense of all the other factors here, though.

Groove: If I’m not feeling strong emotions from a song, I at least want to feel some groove, something that makes me bob along to the beat or gives me a reason to really feel the song in some way. This often goes hand-in-hand with memorability but it’s way more driven by the instrumentation than the vocals.

Variety: This covers a lot of things as well; if individual songs don’t do enough to stand out from each other, they’re all going to blend together and fail to be memorable in any way, and even if all the songs are distinct, if each song is very one-note it’s going to bore me quick. I like songs with dynamics, songs with some unique quirk to them that make them feel like they deserve to exist. Again, pushing this too far can come at the cost of song or album cohesion, though.

As far as these apply to my tastes, I can just point to what I’d consider to be my current top 5 albums and how they stack up;

East of the Wall – The Apologist
Pain of Salvation – The Perfect Element I
Oceansize – Frames
Thrice – Beggars
The Hirsch Effekt – Holon : Anamnesis

My opinions on such may change in the future but for now I think this is the best way I can describe my preferences in music.

I’m also going to do an open Q&A before the first round where you all can ask me questions about my musical preferences & I will add that to this post afterwards.

Okay time to open the floodgates then, as well as start that tastes Q&A I mentioned.
Signups will be open until the end of Sunday, I think, and if we need an elimination round it'll start then. Q&A goes until that time too.

I'm potentially interested in terms of overlap of tastes, only concern is that you've heard everything ever already so I'm not sure what I'd send...

you'd probably do better in this roulette if you couldn't see what you were sending me, so that's probably better for both of us

people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

I have a good feeling about this one! Count me in. Let's see how many of you poor souls I'll be able to outlast / rounds it'll take me to win / minutes of my first album will Parama be able to endure.

This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I'd be eliminated in round 1 of this without a doubt, plus unexpected events have made me pull out of wolf's roulette, so I'll have to pass on this unfortunately.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Is this a sarcasm directed at me because I didn't read something? Because I totally didn't read all the stuff Parama posted, so guilty as charged.

@ Elite you might not need to send yet, if we get enough players that I need to do an elimination round
Ev does need to send tho either way
Y'all are really not taking advantage of this Q&A thing either but that's your loss mostly

There's a Q&A thing? I'm going to ask some black/death metal related questions then!

What's the difference between black metal and death metal? Because I don't know shit about this.

What's your opinion on the makeup a lot of black (or death) metal artists wear on stage? Do you think it's necessary? Do you think it adds to their artistic image and representation of the music they play?
A follow up to this previous question: do you prefer to go to the rail at death (or black? I'm clueless about this!) metal shows, or engage in the mosh pit, or just stand at the bar?
A follow up to the follow up question: do you wear glasses? Because those would be bad if you choose the mosh pit answer.

What about the most black/death (I don't know shit about this) metal country? Which one, in your opinion has produced the best bands in the genre?

(here's a really long question) There's this endless debate (judging by what I've seen on YouTube) between trve kvlt black metal fans and the ones that are trying to show that they're trve kvlt fans by listening to some black metal bands which are, in fact, not trve kvlt black metal bands. Can you name some examples of the bands that are trve, and some that are simple parody on the trve ones and only doing the black (death?) metal thing for money (a lot of people accused Myrkur of that one, but I don't really care as long as the music appeals to me)
In addition to the previous question: what's your opinion on Watain? They seem to be accused of that thing I mentioned before.

If you had to pick one death/black metal band (I don't know shit about them) to see live, any band, with setlist of your choice, which one would you pick?

When you take a shower, do you perform some of the growly vocals of your favourite bands? What's your neighbours' opinion about your amazing growl skills?
What's the best thing to drink after you did growls in the shower? Because I've heard from Zach over there at DTF section there's no safe way to do growly vocals without damaging your vocal cords.

I'll get back to you if I think of anything else to ask.

No, I think we literally had the same question at around the same time and I posted without checking the other replies first :lol

The difference is mostly in the kind of timbres used, black metal is generally using more higher timbres than death metal & usually the production isn't that clean
Black metal also rarely focuses on technical aspects and generally more on atmosphere, vocal style is also pretty different compared to death metal
I dunno how else to describe it

I think the makeup stuff is stupid as hell but I think most metal aesthetics suck really
I barely go to concerts but I'm behind the mosh pit area whenever I do
No glasses

Norway is basically the only answer here lol

The whole debate on trve kvlt is stupid I just want the music to be good
Watain is ok I guess I listened to their newest album but didn't find it particularly interesting (they are on the banlist btw)

I mean I've seen some live already but I would love to exist in the same realm as spectral lore sometime but that's a one man project not a band so

I don't sing in the shower at all and I can't do harsh vocals at all anyways :lol

Also the Q&A is supposed to be mostly about my musical tastes but whatever sure
