my takeaway from the listens i've given the rivers of nihil album so far is that the first half is a fair bit stronger than the second half but i still like the whole album in general, will get back to you in a few weeks when i've got enough listens in to review it though :V

I mean, for me, it's currently sitting at number 10 for the year, so it's not as bad as I made it sound in my last post (it's actually pretty good). I was just expecting more after hearing The Silent Life.

Been kind of secretly updating my original post, but here's an updated version of my ranking for this year so far:

4.5/5
01. Gleb Kolyadin - Gleb Kolyadin
02. Submotion Orchestra - Kites
03. Primordial - Exile Amongst the Ruins
04. Tesseract - Sonder
05. CHVRCHES - Love is Dead
4/5
06. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs
07. Charlie Puth - Voicenotes
08. Thirty Seconds to Mars - America
09. The Family Crest - The War Act I
10. Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
11. The Weeknd - My Dear Melancholy,
12. Dimmu Borgir - Eonian
13. Arkona - Khram
3.5/5
14. The Earth and I - The Candleman and the Curtain
15. A Perfect Circle - Eat the Elephant
16. Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name
17. Spock's Beard - Noise Floor
18. Breaking Benjamin - Embers
19. Brandi Carlile - By the Way, I Forgive You
3.0/5
20. The Glitch Mob - See Without Eyes
21. Fall Out Boy - Mania
2.5/5
22. Between the Buried and Me - Automata I
2.0/5
23. Ihsan - Amr

Charlie Puth has definitely been the sleeper pop hit of the year so far. How good his new album is really caught me off guard (because his earlier stuff is...not so good oops).

You weren't wrong about Good Tiger luke, first listen is really solid, better than the debut. Also coming around to the new Family Crest

Yea, I like the new Good Tiger. It's likely to drop out of my top 10 but it's still good nonetheless. I tried the three other albums from your list, that I hadn't heard. I gotta say The Dali Thundering Concept was probably my fave with Hibakusha a close second. They will be getting more listens for sure  :corn

Oops, Good Tiger kinda fell off my radar after that listen, will fix it today and see where it roughly stands on my top of the year list.

New Zeal & Ardor has reached the top 4 along with Rivers of Nihil, Rolo Tomassi and Greyhaven but I'm not sure which is the #1 right now. TesseracT and BTBAM are close (but I'm not ranking BTBAM until the full album is out). The Dali Thundering Concept is also really good indeed, it's climbing my rankings and probably right behind the ones I mentioned! Hibakusha is also really solid but doesn't have as much lasting value to me, I can see it dropping more at the end of the year.

ok if you put a gun to my head and told me to rank stuff right now,

1. Monotheist - Scourge
2. Lumnos - Ancient Shadows of Saturn
3. Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology
4. Huntsmen - American Scrap
5. Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It
6. Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name
7. Usurpress - Interregnum
8. Between the Buried and Me - Automata I

nothing else I've got I like quite enough to consider, I think, but these are all p. good. Monotheist is actually bloody brilliant tbh but nobody here will like it

3. Breaking Benjamin's Ember
4. Owl City's Cinematic
5. Sevendust's All I See Is War

I think I only have three this year.  Generally don't look for new bands at this point.

Therion - Beloved Antichrist is my favorite.  Their version of The Astonishing?  3 CDs, lighter, more melodic and fantastic.

Arena - Double Vision.  Not the glory days but much better than their recent CDs and the 22 minute closer is rock solid.

Dukes of the Orient - S/T.  John Payne from Asia.  It sounds a lot like that era of Asia, nothing great but a very nice CD if you like Payne (I do although like most I liked the Wetton era(s) more).

Florence + The Machine's new album is growing on me after initially leaving me cold and is definitely going to be a top 10 for the year.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Beloved Antichrist ended up being fairly middle of the road for me. I think it's currently sitting at #66 on my 2018 album ranking list.
I still need to listen to the new Arena. Haven't gotten to it yet.

This is another album that is on my list to listen to still. I'm pretty far behind in my 2018 album listening since my roulette.

There has been another change in my top ten. That Alkaloid album could end up on the top of my list by the end of the year. It is so good! :hefdaddy

1. Messa - Feast for Water (Bluesy Jazzy Doom Metal)
2. Alkaloid - Liquid Anatomy (If Yes & Rush Merged to make Technical Death Metal)
3. Ostura - The Room (Symphonic Progressive Metal)
4. Oceans of Slumber - The Banished Heart (Progressive Metal)

Took you long enough to get into Poly-Math ::)

Automata probably reaching the top 3 for me now that both parts are out, along with Rolo Tomassi and TesseracT (Rivers of Nihil and Greyhaven probably finishing up the top 5). Still feel Liquid Anatomy is very weak compared to Malkuth Grimoire.

I've given the new Poly-Math a listen, as they're playing ArcTangent, and I'm definitely going to catch them live (I'm checking out all the bands on the line up and they're one of the best, along with Myrkur).

Automata I & II have crept into my top 5 now, I'm really digging the second part.

I agree that Liquid Anatomy is not quite as good as Malkuth Grimoire but there's not much in it to be fair. I've not listened to it enough for it to have moved from my top 20 into top 10, yet. The album I rate highest, that is not being mentioned anywhere, is the new Boss Keloid album. I freaking love it!

Interesting side note (well, at least I thought it was interesting). I only have 6 albums that I consider a 9/10 so far this year. Last year I had 23 (no 10/10's for either year). In 2016 I had 4 10/10's and 20 9/10's. I don't know if I'm just getting pickier or if the past 2 years were just that much better for new releases.

I remember playing Ekerot by Poly-Math a couple times and you didn't like it :/

I prefer Melencolia and Reptiles because they're shorter and at least as good as the new album, I think I prefer my instrumental math-rock in smaller doses

My top 10 has changed quite a lot, but there's too many top 10 contenders to update the list right now, need to revisit a lot of albums first.
