Ok folks, last day to update or submit your list! I've got prelim. results and the top 5 is pretty much solidified, also there's a double tie for #9  :corn . But I'm glad how the top 10 turned out - a healthy balance of youngster and fogey music.

All right, here's my top 10.  I didn't get to listen to Greta Van Fleet or Ghost's new album, but I probably wouldn't put it in the bottom part of my top 10 anyway (though there could have been that surprise factor, but whatevs).

1. Myles Kennedy - Year of the Tiger
2. Tremonti - A Dying Machine (This was actually a closer #2 than the other times a Tremonti album came at #2 on my top albums list in comparison to in 2012 going against Clockwork Angels and in 2015 going against The Book of Souls.)
3. Owl City - Cinematic
4. Breaking Benjamin - Ember
5. Sevendust - All I See is War
6. Northward - Northward
7. Poets of the Fall - Ultraviolet
8. Bad Wolves - Disobey
9. Black Stone Cherry - Family Tree
10. Alice in Chains - Rainer Fog

Also, as a shout-out, the best thing I did listen to this year was Alter Bridge's Live at the Royal Albert Hall DVD featuring the Parallax Orchestra.  I do understand the band sometimes has their struggles of wanting to go deliver the epic performance, but it comes off as merely good which usually equals disappointment, but for those nights, this performance was close to perfection as it can get.  It rivaled their best live DVD (Live From Amsterdam) and I do feel like those two shows at the Royal Albert Hall is the crowning gem of the band's careers.

I guess I will also add a top 10 songs in 2018 as well (should we make a thread of that as well?).

1. Myles Kennedy - Love Can Only Heal
2. Tremonti - Desolation
3. Owl City - Cinematic
4. Breaking Benjamin - Torn in Two
5. Poets of the Fall - Fool's Paradise
6. Beartooth - Disease
7. Panic at the Disco - High Hopes (yeah, this song got a lot of replay value from me.  I can't help it.  Such a positive sounding song.)
8. Bring Me the Horizon - Wonderful Life (another weird one, but I liked that Limp Bizkit/RATM-sorta funk they were trying to bring in the song)
9. Northward - Get What You Give
10. Disturbed - Hold On To Memories

I'm amazed at the diversity of music here, and sometimes wonder how we all made it to DTF - especially with so much music *not* similar to DT.

Ok I'll do an updated list, but this isn't a final list. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't make sense to do that until end-January (I mean it'd still change after that, but that's a reasonable time to finish checking out stuff from the last month or two of the year).

Pretty dominated by various forms of metal and electronica.

1.  Haken - Vector
2.  Amorphis - Queen of Time
3.  Submotion Orchestra - Kites
4.  Frank Turner - Be More Kind
5.  Maribou State - Kingdoms in Colour
6.  Jon Hopkins - Singularity
7.  Between the Buried and Me - Automata
8.  Euphoreon - Ends of the Earth
9.  Nested Shapes - Grain EP
10. Gunship - Dark All Day

Other 4* albums, in alphabetical order:
 - Arcane Roots - Landslide EP
 - Andrew Bayer - In My Last Life
 - Black Peaks - All That Divides
 - The Earth and I - The Candleman and the Curtain
 - Ihsahn - Àmr
 - Infected Mushroom - Head of NASA and the 2 Amish Boys
 - (The Reign of) Kindo - Happy However After
 - Max Cooper - One Hundred Billion Sparks
 - Mesadorm - Heterogaster
 - Muse - Simulation Theory
 - The Ocean - Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic
 - Odd Palace - Things to Place on the Moon
 - Omnium Gatherum - The Burning Cold
 - Parius - The Eldritch Realm
 - Polymath - House of Wisdom | We Are the Devil
 - Roine Stolt's The Flower King - Manifesto of an Alchemist
 - Spock's Beard - Noise Floor
 - TesseracT - Sonder
 - Thrice - Palms
 - Tremonti - A Dying Machine
 - The World Is Quiet Here - Prologue
 - VOLA - Applause of a Distant Crowd

RESULTS
« Reply #263 on: December 31, 2018, 01:42:54 PM »
Ok, results are in! There was a tie on the last spot so I chose to include them both. Scoring followed giving your top entry 10 points, second entry 9 points, and so on. This year there's been 370 entries, comprising 205 different records, and there are 141 albums that have only been featured once - all in all, a pretty varied list. Thanks for participating folks, and I wish you a Happy New Year  :D

1. Haken - Vector
2. Ghost - Prequelle
3. Redemption - Long Night's Journey into Day
4. Between the Buried and Me - Automata II
5. Judas Priest - Firepower
6. Amorphis - Queen Of Time
7. TesseracT - Sonder
8. Michael Romeo - War Of The Worlds // Pt. 1
9. VOLA - Applause Of A Distant Crowd
10. Spock's Beard - Noise Floor
10. Voivod - The Wake

Full results with can be found here. Curious to see how many times each record was mentioned? Here.

Not a very strong year for music.  Seems like most agreed that the Haken album was not up to their usual standard, yet it finished as the number 1 album for the year?

I can't say there was a single album this year that I truly loved, but my favorites were probably those by Ghost and Muse.

haken is #1 because the most people have listened to them
this is because they are like the DT of the 2010's in terms of prog metal popularity lol

Haken got mentioned 19 times according to Sacul’s post. That obviously adds up to quite a lot of point, even when people didn’t think it was up to their usual standards. When you’ve only heard about 10 albums, it’s not weird to include it on your list, even thiugh it’s not exactly your gfavourite thing, I guess. I can’t say that I agree with the top 10 as made, but that’s logical as mine was quite different, but thank you Sacul for taking the time to do this!!

While an interesting experiment, the replies below the list immediately betray the problems inherent in trying to create a consensus list for the forum. People who aren't fans of the band in question will immediately undermine the result. "[Band] is only top because more people listened to them". It proves the diversity of our community and that not many of us can agree on something.

Yeah it's definitely more about what album the most people heard than the album most people loved. I thought Ghost's new album was incredibly lackluster.

yea, seems like just being mentioned a lot is likely going to get on the total top 10 and Haken being similar to DT and we are on a DT forum, it's only natural for it to be ranked so highly.  It's a very good album so I don't think there's anything wrong with it landing where it did.

People who aren't fans of the band in question will immediately undermine the result. "[Band] is only top because more people listened to them". It proves the diversity of our community and that not many of us can agree on something.

But why is that a problem?  The premise isn't to create a consensus.  But to merely tabulate what the most popular new albums from last year are among fans here.  It accomplished that.  I know for me, I look at the posts in this thread and wonder to myself whether most of the "band" and albums listed aren't just made up, since I've never heard of them and have little interest in figuring out whether or not I would like them.  And for the bands I do recognize, for a number of them, I just shake my head in disbelief about seeing them spoken highly of.  But at the end of the day, that's fine.  This isn't about making me like anyone else's choices are.  It's just about seeing what choices come up the most frequently here, and are thought of the most highly.

Anecdotally, I would guess Haken.  Even aside from it landing in the top spot overall, I think it is just obviously loved by a lot of folks here.  For me, it ranked dead last among albums I heard, and I hope I never hear it again.  :lol  But I get why it is #1.

Dead last huh? I mean it didn't make my top 10, but it was actually a pretty good album. Clearly you haven't heard any of my top 10 worst albums of the year, but I dont recommend wasting your time going out and listening to them.  :lol

Yeah, I hated it.  Don't know if you saw my posts in the Haken thread, but I had been given the opportunity to review it before it dropped.  After listening for over 3 weeks, I had to just give up and ask for someone else to do the review.  I just hated almost everything about it and couldn't find anything positive to say, and I didn't want to put something so negative out there for a band's new release.

Oh yeah, I do remember you posting about that now. Do you like any of the previous Haken albums?

Been a good year for music. But my top record came in the last weeks of 2018:

1. Lost Domain - ...In the Waiting Room of Death

TAC suggested this band, and I was blown away how good the record was (and their previous EP). The best way to describe them, at least for me, is to call them a hybrid of Queensryche and Fates Warning, with a commanding female lead vocalist, and a very riff-oriented vibe. It's not as proggy as Dream Theater, but the prog is there. Tons of great drama on the record, without being melodramatic.

2. Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog

Nice comeback album to my ears. Their previous was good (I'd say four or five tracks are great, but the rest filler), but very samey in terms of pacing. Things just got washed out. Rainer Fog gets things sorted with a nicely paced trip, all killer, no filler. My favorite, "Red Giant," is probably my favorite song of theirs in the post-Layne Staley era. And that's saying something, given some of the tunes on Black Gives Way to Blue.

3. Witherfall - A Prelude to Sorrow

Much anticipated second album doesn't disappoint. The two massive long songs are the highlight. Really dark, really progressive, with some incredibly dramatic vocals. If you haven't checked these guys out, I'd say mix the prog side of Floyd and Queen with metal side of Dream Theater and 80s Metallica.

Biggest disappointment:

Sevendust - All I See is War

I've been a hardcore 7D fan since the late 1990s. This record was exactly what I was dreading. They went LIGHT, and while Sevendust can do the acoustic thing really well, and has, they tried to marry a lighter sound with their all electric instrumentation, and it fell way flat for me. No life, no balls. I was pretty crushed. I thought the record before this, KILL THE FLAW was a great album, really heavy, with some proggier moments here and there mixed with their traditional riffy, yet melodic nu-metal guitar sound. But I knew they'd either go really light with this one, or really heavy. Unfortunately, they did the former, and it never clicked for me. Hoping the next one kicks the heaviness into high gear.

No.  I've never felt like I connected with them.  But I figured that if I made more of a conscious effort to dig into this new one, I could find lots to appreciate, even if I ultimately decided it wasn't for me.  Ultimately, it didn't turn out that way.  But that's okay.
