Your favorites of these Rush songs - Volume 2
« on: April 15, 2018, 08:30:46 PM »
Songs from 1989-2012, with a catch: I only featured songs that were played by the band at some point in the 21st century.

You can vote for up to 7.

I went with:

Leave That Thing Alone
Headlong Flight
Dreamline
Animate
Clockwork Angels
Ghost of a Chance
The Anarchist

Tried to not overthink it and go on first instinct. Last 1 or 2 that I picked took some minor thought.

Dreamline
Caravan
Headlong Flight
The Pass
Driven
Animate
Secret Touch
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

Leave That Thing Alone
The Pass
Where’s My Thing?
Earthshine
Clockwork Angels
Ghost of a chance

Tougher choices for this poll. Had to leave off Animate, The Anarchist, and The Garden. Lots of good songs on equal levels this time around.

I find it quite funny that I had the exact same experience with this poll that I did on the last one.

Most of the songs there are fantastic, and I thought it was going to be difficult.   So, I figured I would start with the “absolutely MUST be included” stuff, and then see if I couldn’t whittle it down from there.   But as it turned out, my “absolute must” selections came out to exactly 7 songs.

Headlong Flight
Ghost Rider
The Pass
Far Cry
Bravado
The Garden
Driven

EDIT - Just speaking to the strength of the Rush catalog, my two least favorite Rush albums (Vapor Trails and Roll the Bones) still get representation.   Proving that even their weaker albums have songs that are among my all time favorites.

The Pass
Bravado
Leave That Thing Alone
Earthshine
Secret Touch
The Main Monkey Business
Clockwork Angels

Pretty much my favorites from each of the 7 albums available, at least of the played-live songs presented here, except TFE, tho I opted for 2 VT songs because I really love that album. I discovered Rush between 2001-2002, so VT came out as I was falling in love with the band, and then heading those songs live on Rush In Rio really made them come to life for me. I think the one-two-punch of The Pass & Bravado on RIR also cemented their place as favorites for me.

So...this is sort of a "best of the worst" collection, eh?  Much easier than volume 1.

I went with:

Headlong Flight
The Pass
Earthshine (these three are easily the best of the group)

Caravan
Presto
Far Cry
Driven

My Rush timeline is bizarre. I got in to late 70s Rush in the early 90s, then 90s Rush in the late 90s, then 80s Rush in... well, I never got in to 80s Rush. Anyway, at when Presto was released, The Pass was getting some radio play, and I loved it. But for the longest time I never knew who it was. I never would have thought it was the same band who produced the awesomeness that was the 2112-PW era, and was amazed when I finally heard it was indeed Rush. I still don't really think of it as a Rush song, it is so unique, and that special to me.

P/G is the dumbest abbreviation for anything, ever. Not participating in the Rush thread. Wanted to get this off my chest.

LOL it is pretty odd-looking, but it's on the official album artwork. Blame Hugh Syme, maybe?  :lol

I prefer to use GUP personally, especially when typing. It's a lot easier to go for the G U P keys instead of reaching for the forward-slash.

Then again, I also *never* use PW for a Rush abbreviation, even with context, just because of Power Windows and Permanent Waves. I winced at your "2112-PW", despite having the context of knowing it meant Permanent Waves, I'm just used to seeing/using PEW and POW.

Fairly easily.

Actually it's not horrible, just my second least favorite from that list and probably a bottom 20 or 25 Rush song for me.

Actually, I second this.   If I had to pick my least favs from this list...those would be the ones.   Followed closely by another song I know gets a lot of love around here.   Earthshine.  The riff is cool, but I really hate Geddy’s vocals on that song.   And that’s coming from someone who usually really likes Geddy’s voice.  But honestly, if I had to pick one thing that ruined most of Vapor Trails for me (besides the obviously horrible production) it’s Geddy’s vocal delivery.   He really strains horribly and tries to do WAY too much.   Ghost Rider is amazing just because it’s one of the few songs on the album where his vocals are much more subdued.

The Pass is a fantastic song, one of their better slower numbers. It has been a fan favorite, and according to Geddy, one of their favorite songs within the band. So what, if it has some pop sensibilities?

When I think “pop”, I think of the old American Bandstand metric. “It’s got a nice beat, and you can dance to it.” By that rule, even Pour Some Sugar on Me is pop.

I’m not seeing The Pass as a pop song.
