I tried, but “nice” is not a word I would use. The instrumental album by that Jari dude was ok though.

This is, indeed, excellent. Short (obviously), but sweet. The two actual songs are fantastic, the instrumental has a very cool synth-wave influence and the acoustic reinterpretation of Constellation is a nice bonus. I wonder if this is an appetizer for a full album...

Really enjoyed this one when it came out. Is there anything new cooking in the Watchtower camp?

Not nearly as grandiose as Enshine. It's along those lines but way more chill. This is their current release. They caught my attention with their 2018 album The Light.
It's perfect for a lazy afternoon on the couch.

What did you think of the new ATG? I have posted a couple of quick comments in the new releases thread...

I've never listened to At The Gates before, but it was on a list of new releases that I check out every week. It was okay. Nothing really stood out to me on the first listen, but it wasn't bad either. Serviceable melodeath, but again, nothing grabbed me by the shoulders and hooked me in. I might give it a couple more spins over the weekend, or check out some of their other albums. I enjoyed the Felled album more; blackened folk metally stuff, the production is more raw than the ATG record, but it has more elements that I personally enjoy, along the lines of, say, Agalloch.

I thought the new At the Gates was fine. I wasn't giving it my full attention but nothing particularly stood out. I've been spinning At War with Reality a bit more recently and I think it's probably my second favourite album of theirs. No need to say what my #1 is.

Would that be Slaughter of the Soul? That's mine too, but if you are really old-school you might actually go back to the Red in the Sky/With Fear I Kiss... period  ;D That was almost a different band anyway, as one main songwriter from back then left after the 2nd album...

For me, as much as SotS famously spawned a whole subgenre that got waaay overcrowded, it's hard to deny how much of a blast it still is. It shouldn't be "punished" for what it did  ;) So many good riffs. The first 5-song run is insane. Although I always felt the seeds for that were already in Terminal Spirit Disease. Plus, TSD still had a little more of that melancholy that I really enjoy in my music. For my money, if it was more than an EP + live songs, it could even be better than SotS...

Yea it's totally SotS. I have most of their albums on my ipod, including the early ones. I don't listen to them a great deal but they have their merits.

Just finishing up a second listen to the new album. How did I miss the saxophone on one of the songs? I know it's been a trend to add sax to progressive metal, especially progressive black metal, but I'm not sure it's what i want on an At the Gates album. The album is growing one for sure though.

One of the most underrated albums of the last decade was Odd Dimension's Last Embrace For Humanity from 2013. There's literally been no news from them for 8 years, and they suddenly appeared with a new album a month or so ago. They have a new singer (and drummer). I sampled them, and I just thought the new singer was way too silky smooth, whereas the previous singer..wasn't, but he had tons of character. The sample turned me off.

Anyway, today I had the house basically to myself, so I thought I'd check it out for good.

Damn, this is an excellent album. This singer is great, but I just can't place a comparison. This album should appeal to Styx or even Kansas fans that like the heavier side of those bands.

F&J's debut (featuring Jason Newsted pre Metallica) is 35 years old today! It's not really one of my go to Flotsam albums, but damn, it should be! :metal

Just looking at the titles, it seems like it might be a sort of concept to it. And there's some nice female vocals on it as well. You might like this.

If I can cheat and include the Dukes albums, my top tier would be Apple Venus Part 1, Black Sea, English Settlement, Nonsuch and the two Dukes albums.  As much as I like Skylarking and Oranges & Lemons, the mixes of both prevent me from loving them as much as the ones I have in my top tier.

I think this is the first new physical CD I've purchased since DT's D/T.  Nothing ground-breaking.  But, overall, a very solid and enjoyable release nonetheless.
