Nightmare - Aeternam

Awfully fucking generic for having such a potentially awesome new singer. Oh well

This ended up being my playlist (in order) for my road trip last week.  I made a rule, full albums and no repeating artists:

They've got MUCH better albums, FYI ^

Right now I'm listening to the new Judas Priest album Firepower.  This is their best release since Screaming for Vengeance

I've heard the first three so far. I remember trying God's Equation back in the day when I saw them live but I only remember the title track. The first album is good but uneven, the second album was boring, Enigmatic Calling is easily the best of them so far imo

So whereas Lun was like a 50/50 combination of pop and metal, this is like, 80% pop and barely even a metal album. While that's a bit disappointing, I'm still really liking this so far. Some songs are real earworms, but the good kind.

the second album was boring

dafuq.

Yup. Typical prog metal shenanigans, boring. Had its moments but the first album had far more exciting songs (not in the first half, but the back half was loaded with tasty, interesting stuff). The second one sounded like there was too much midtempo fooling around which is usually boring. I may not have listened to it in the best context because I kept having to pause it throughout the record, but I just didn't enjoy it much. The third album has significantly more interesting (and, importantly, speedy) moments, and LOADS of tasty keyboard playing which appeals to me far more than any of the guitar work.

All that to say that when I saw them live in 2009, without knowing a note of their music, they put on an excellent and super entertaining live show, especially because the singer was so good.

NP: Ramsey Lewis Trio - Time Flies OMG this is so good. Soulful, tasty blues-jazz, piano driven stuff. LOVE this

I'm supposed to be listening to UFO, so don't tell TAC. I'm listening to this:

Madie is no Maggy Luyten, but she is holding her own and I love the music. A great follow-up to Dead Sun. Just wish Maggy would have stuck with'em.

EDIT: And I see above that Walrus didn't like it. I don't have much Power Metal type stuff in my collection, but I find these last 2 Nightmare albums to be excellent. I only bought the last one because I am a Maggy fanboy. It ended up being my #2 album that year.

beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

I love the new singer, she's great, but all the mid tempo breakdowns and riffs make it sound generic as heck to me. The really fast moments are where they're brilliant, but I don't think there are enough of them here, and the vocal melodies aren't compelling to me. I think with better songwriting they'd be on fire, but that's just my two cents. If they could bust out more songs like Serpentine I'd be over the moon.

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third
Enslaved - Utgard

Our debut album "Eläimys" is a trip I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone into Pain of Salvation, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Magma etc.

Jónsi - Shiver

The last Jónsi solo album I heard - the only other one - was Go. That album was all over the place and had a very eccentric energy to it. I liked some of it but it was mostly just weird to me. This seems more along the lines of Sigur Ros, but a little less ambient, but still atmospheric and enjoyable. It's pleasant, basically. In my 2020 experiment of listening to as much new music as I can, this is album #204 that I will have listened to in full. Kind of wild to think about that, I've never been this diligent about listening to anything and everything over a long period of time. It's fun. Most of them have been forgettable or stinkers, but there's a whole lot of amazing music in the bunch and I can't wait to sort everything out between the good, the bad, and the meh at year's end/start of 2021
