Currently in soundtrack mode esp scores of TV shows and been listening to the entire Mr. Robot's score on repeat. Great stuff which is very inspired by Trent Reznor- Atticus Ross and even some M83 plus I'm sure there's a few I'm missing.
On Volume 3.

Tonight, I will be listening to four albums back-to-back. I've never heard any of these before, and two of the bands are ones I've never listened to before in my life.

Transatlantic's Bridge Across Forever is a masterpiece, so I know I've gotta get to their other albums. So I'll start with SMPT:e, which apparently has what a lot of people consider to be their best song
I was originally going to do Porcupine Tree's The Incident, but decided to go with Lightbulb Sun since I'm listening to four albums in a row and this is the shorter album of the two.
I'm interested in Leprous mainly because people have compared them to Haken, so I picked Coal as that seems to be the fan-favorite.
And as for TesseracT... I mainly just decided to go with them now because I think the album art for Polaris looks cool.

Transatlantic - SMPT:e - Pretty good album, as I expected, though I'd say Bridge Across Forever is significantly better. I'm not sure I'm a fan of We All Need Some Light, but everything else was great. The lyrics aren't the best, though...
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun - Out of the four albums I listened to today, I think I enjoyed this one the most. I like the atmosphere of Porcupine Tree's later albums better, but this one's still really good. I think my favorites off the album are Hatesong and Feel So Low.
Leprous - Coal - Honestly, I didn't care much for this album. It felt way too repetitive at times and I do not like the harsh vocals. I did like a couple songs on this album (The Valley and Salt), but aside from those two, I don't think I'd want to return to this album. Furthermore, I'm unsure if I'd want to listen to anything else by Leprous, provided it's anything similar to this album. That being said, I don't think this is a bad album or anything, it's just not something I really enjoyed.
TesseracT - Polaris - I'm a bit confused here. It feels like I shouldn't like this album -- it reminds me of a lot of bands that I find annoying -- but yet I do like this album. It's nothing fantastic, but I like it enough that I'd listen to it again. My only complaint is that it felt like all the songs kind of sounded the same, but at least it sounded good. Going in, I was expecting the album to be heavy and aggressive, but I'm surprised at how melodic it tended to be. I've heard their previous album, Altered State, was really good, so I might check that out in the near future.

Best Leprous album.

One of the best Porcupine Tree albums, but pretty inconsistent (the three that came afterwards are better)

(Debatably) worst Tesseract album. Listen to Altered State or Sonder instead.

No opinion on Transatlantic. :P

On today's agenda, playing a bit of catch-up with a band I haven't paid attention to for 10 years:

From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Leprous is a completely different band right now. You might want to try Pitfalls.

Polaris is indeed considerd TesseracT's weakest album. If you like it you will probably like Altered State and Sonder. Their debut One is also great but contains some harsh vocals which might put you off.

Marillion- Marbles, Seasons End

Ruch - Test For Echo - I was challenged by a colleague as he loves it and I don’t. It was better than I remember but still not great.

It's been a while since I've listened to this album, but wow, this has got to be the absolute worst Maiden album ever. The music feels lazy and the the songwriting is terrible. How did they go from Seventh Son to this?

It's been a while since I've listened to this album, but wow, this has got to be the absolute worst Maiden album ever. The music feels lazy and the the songwriting is terrible. How did they go from Seventh Son to this?

I get why Adrian Smith jumped ship based on the direction they took. Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son (especially) were more ambitious & epic albums that went for a bigger scope and tried to do big things and to go from that to the simple 'lets do some gritty street sound rockers' just seemed so reductive in retrospect.

As someone who used to listen to loads of Maiden and Bruce in my teen years and have now come back around to re-discover the discographies ~10 years later, Maiden's 90s is just really weak. I have a mild soft spot for X Factor but generally I would say even if you took the best ~3 songs from each of the 4 Maiden albums in the 90s, you'd still get an album that wasn't among their best overall. I don't know if it's controversial or not but Bruce definitely had a stronger output in that decade than Maiden did. (though Sign of the Cross and the Clansman are both among my favorite Maiden tunes)

This is fairly nice, mild progressive rock I guess? Will definitely get more spins from me.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

the curious case of an album that's one kinda bog-standard slower black metal track surrounded by two excellent blackened drone tracks that make up almost three-quarters of the total runtime

i don't know what to make of that

I could listen to the first six Van Halen albums over and over and over and never get tired of them.  The quintessential hard rock.
