been on a spree today
(vis - light lost)
ever wanted an album in the style of "the usual fast-paced post-hardcore cut at the start of every TDH act album"? here it is. granted i don't think these songs are as good as those tend to be but i dig the style on the whole & it's a fun listen, will def be picking this up
(abigail williams - walk beyond the dark)
while it's not necessarily my favorite black metal release of the year stylistically it's still pretty solid stuff. weirdly i think the shorter cuts work better for me than the longer cuts. it's better than a lot of what i've heard this year regardless
(the night watch - an embarrassment of riches)
instrumental "prog" "metal" (it's some of those some of the time) that's also kinda cinematic and vaguely conceptual, and also pretty solid and pretty fun to boot? they have a good grasp of melodic hooks and the songs feel diverse, there's one that's like a sea shanty by way of prog metal, another that's like weird jazzy tribal music, others that are just straight prog metal, all the while driven by violin as the main instrument. it's a bit long but i was surprised how much i got into this one
(Vi som älskade varandra så mycket – Det Onda. Det Goda. Det Vackra. Det Fula.)
hmm. screamo. i dig the music a lot but the vocals in this genre rarely work for me and i don't think this is gonna be an exception. i'd dig an instrumental version of this though probably? dunnoooo.
(husbandry - a port in a storm)
i dunno. i should like this more than i actually do, but it's just not working for me. the vocals don't fit the music, it's very roughly assembled & lacking in any good hooks in general, one or two of the track just sound too discordant compared to the rest. i think like, the first track was cool and the first half in general okay but it totally lost me by the back half
(the number twelve looks like you - wild gods)
oohh wow i like maybe two or three tracks here but a lot of this is emphasizing the wrong parts of mathcore and not doing it for me at all. their previous album which i got earlier in the year also had a much better grasp on hooks than this one feels like it has, i'm just not getting much out of this, i ended up not even finishing it lol
(hypno5e - a distant (dark) source)
train i don't get it. this band is like. the clean stuff is good on its own but not substantial enough to be interesting for a full album. the metal seems to exist purely functionally, to be "heavy" but all of it sounds exactly. the. same. i swear parts of this sound exactly like segments of their last album, which also had segments that reminded me heavily of the one before it. neither this or the last one have had the emotional core or experimentation that made acid mist tomorrow at least solidly compelling either. this is honestly just flat boring.
(messora - the door)
hmm. technically progressive death metal but it's more death than prog, which is to say, fairly meatheaded and riffy in a way that just doesn't quite click for me. i enjoyed it on my first listen or two but i'm already kinda disinterested in it now
i'm gonna listen to a few more tonight i think, trying to get my last 2019 album purchases in before the end of the year
i'm down to about 11 more i need to give another listen to before i decide whether or not i'd wanna buy 'em and i can burn through that in the next day or two i'm sure, so
(fleshworld - the essence has changed, but the details remain)
part of me wants to not like this because of the awful album cover and part of me wants to not like this because it's sludge metal but it's also post-hardcore with touches of black metal too and i like both those things and..... yeah screw me i guess but this is really good, intense and dark and surprisingly diverse on top of that, some fast-banger post-hardcore tracks, some bass-driven grooves, one track that's especially emotive and powerful (the first title track), it's a tight 40ish minutes and i'm surprised at how much i enjoy it
