Well, I imagine you've already tried The Black Halo, but that would be the place to go. I'd put it head and shoulders above all their other albums. One of those albums where a band captures magic in a bottle on one release and never quite gets back there again.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King

Score reading along with it. It's kinda interesting to see how prog has...well, progressed since this album. Like, the use of time signature changes in prog slowly got more complicated (I score read some Yes songs just before this, and they're more metrically complex than King Crimson is and DT...well, you can imagine). A lot of the trends that defined how prog uses meters were established very early on from what I can see, it's just that each generation of prog bands pushed the boundaries a little further. In the Court of the Crimson King, for example, has time-signature changes in the low double digits while every DT album has somewhere between 180 and 600.

But on the other hand, there's a lot less counterpoint and stuff going on. A lot of things that seem to be common place in early 70s prog just seems to be gone now. The harmonies of bands nowadays are a little bit simpler (not bad tho, they just decided to focus on different things) and the ridiculously dense counterpoint of bands like Yes and KC are gone. The free improv stuff and S P I C Y note choices that KC used a lot seems to have been dropped really quickly too (I'm not too sad about that tho). The tempo also seems to have picked up a lot since the early days, because most of the songs here would be considered ballads now. I think it's interesting how much progressive metal shifted the focus from harmony/form/counterpoint to rhythm/form/meter to incorporate the new rhythmic influences.

Anyways that's my musings. There's a lot of good stuff in this album and a lot of things that I wish had caught on in prog in general (and some things that I'm VERY glad did not).

The Beach Boys are maddening to me.   The specific surf stuff is kind of dated, it's hard to listen to without thinking of what a huge d-rocket Mjke Love is, and how sad Brian's story is (though he's not without blame himself), and yet... you listen to their harmonies and it all floats away on a silky pillow of pure artistry.

"God Only Knows" is the song from that album, though it's not my favorite (that's "Sloop John B" or "Wouldn't It Be Nice" on that album, "Good Vibrations" over all).  I'm clearly wrong about that, since Sir Paul has declared that the greatest song ever written, but if you are able to get any of the Pet Sounds or Smile archive releases to hear the vocal-only tracks, they are a revelation.  I rarely if ever listen to the "stem" releases, but I can sit there and listen to the vocal snippets Brian recorded all day long. It's like popping chocolates, it's so sweet.

This is a lot more "post" and artsy than Futility Report, the shortest track is entirely some kind of avantgarde/ambient crap. The original vocalist also left and the new black metal vox aren't doing as much for me.

White Ward is streaming on Invisible Oranges: http://www.invisibleoranges.com/white-ward-love-exchange-failure-premiere/

I have only heard the title track but it's some of the best stuff I've heard all year, gonna listen to the stream today :corn

The title track is pretty good and so is the last one, but I guess a lot of the black metal on this one feels a bit too much on the generic side, personally. One song is also all female vocals with no growls.

Tool- Fear Inoculum... haven't been able to listen to much else in the last week or so.  Just seem to be in the mood for Tool.

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."  Ecclesiastes 12:13

Now with Twitler taking a high end steak of this caliber and insulting the cow that died for it by having it well done just shows zero respect for the product, which falls right in line with the amount of respect he shows for pretty much everything else.- Lonestar

I think I've really fallen in love with this guy's music - amazing minimalist electronic music with some microhouse and art pop elements.
