God I'm becoming such a Sacul when it comes to music taste lately...

The Black Queen - Fever Daydream
The Black Queen - Infinite Games

I really don't mind this change of musical direction from Greg Puciato. He has put out plenty of heavy music, this is incredibly refreshing, has kind of a Depeche Mode/Tears For Fears vibe

I'd say it was worth the wait, but not really.  Not because it isn't awesome - on 1 listen, I'd say it's already top3 AOTY material... just that none of us should've been forced to wait this long!

Getting around to another batch of new albums that have just been released. Thoughts will be updated as I make my way through them.

Chthonic - Battlefields of Asura:

This was enjoyable and I'll likely download it. It's kind of what I was expecting but the guitar solos are superior to anything they've done on previous albums for me. I listened to the English version and I'll probably give the Taiwanese version a go as well as I think they sound better singing in their native tongue (who cares if I can't understand it). It was suitably brutal but I didn't notice as much of the traditional instruments as on previous albums, shame.

Set and Setting - Tabula Rasa:

Parama, I kind of get where you were coming from with this but I don't think it's THAT boring. They go from dreamy soundscapes to black metal but I think they'd benefit from vocals, more than most instrumental bands. I'll give it more listens because, as Train had mentioned, I can see it being a grower.

VOLA - Applause of a Distant Crowd:

Quite a bit to digest here but I loved the contrast in styles going on. It's djent-y, but different enough to stand apart from djent cliches and I liked the vocals. I can't remember exactly how their debut sounded compared to this? Another strong album that I'll be revisiting.

Larry and his Flask - This Remedy:

Damn, these guys still have it (I was worried they were on a downward spiral). I can't imagine I'd find many fans of a band like this on here. Larry and his Flask are like bluegrass/folk/punk and they are still one of my top 5 live experiences of all time. This time around they have added extra horns to some of the songs so they even go a bit ska punk! I absolutely love the lead vocalist and could just listen to him sing about whiskey, the road and his passion for his music all day. Not for everyone but check them out, especially if they ever play a show near you, they are an energetic powerhouse live  :metal

Atreyu - In Our Wake:

I guess I gave this a listen out of some sort of feeling of owing it to the band. I used to quite like these guys and some of their albums have been quite important to me and my musical journey. It's fine but I won't be revisiting, just too much other good stuff to listen to.

Seventh Wonder - Tiara:

The only SW album I really know is Mercy Falls and I like it quite a bit. This new one seems to have everything I like about Mercy Falls without the terrible voice acting so yea I'll give this a few more listens soon. Might end up in my top 20 of the year

Agreed, it’s excellent. I reckon the wait was because of all the shite Frontiers already had scheduled for release, same with the Whitesnake 😡😡😡

@Luke I thoight the new VOLA album was amazing on first listen. On Reddit it's getting a lot of hate, the first album was very heavy with its instrumentation, and this one focuses more on atmosphere. Truthfully, this one seems like it's gonna be better, I especially loved the title track, Whaler and Smartfriend. Only track I don't like at all is Ghosts.

Set and Setting is a bit strange, I think I love it but it's a very mood dependent record for me, I actually like it more when I'm doing other stuff and occasionally catch a groove cause that and the big soundscapes is what mostly appeals to me.

I tried the new Coheed album, but I wasn't in the mood and the album is very long so only got through a couple tracks. It does seem like an album by them that I would like so I'm going to try again soon.

The new Crippled Black Phoenix album grew on me big time and it's now comfortably in my top 10 albums OTY, loove it!

oh yeah the new vola was not djenty djent djentys and i thought it was okay, might revisit
new seventh wonder i didn't finish but i kinda expected that. it's like the most emotionally flat flavor of prog metal that i never get anything out of, i hate their guitar tone and the dude's an alright singer technically speaking but he doesn't have any passion in his voice, i can't remember a single moment from what i did listen to of the album. whatever though :V

I'm going to listen to the first VOLA album again after I've finished Seventh Wonder's new one. I know I liked both so will see how they stand up when they're fresh in my mind.

I liked Set and Setting's last album quite a bit but to be honest that's just likely because it was like a new discovery. I'll give the new one a few more listens.

I'm sad to say the new Coheed album isn't doing a great deal for me after 4 listens. I mean, I'm not too worried as my favourite C&C albums are the ones that take longest to grow on me so I'll probably be obsessing over it at some time in the future. For the moment, a lot of it is just not too memorable.

New CBP didn't really do anything after the first two listens so I've not revisited yet. I'm still crushing so hard on I, Vigilante that everything else by them just seems to miss the mark for me. I do love them though so I'll download so I can listen more anyway.

Edit: Just checked my last.fm and turns out I never actually listened to the first VOLA album  :lol I just checked out one song and added it to a playlist to listen to (and I just haven't got to it yet). Well I'm listening now and I'm digging it  :metal

Steven Wilson: The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) (2013)

Frost*: Milliontown (2006)

Dream Theater: Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory (1999)

Also, I forgot the new Seventh Wonder was released...whenever it was released.

Love how they brought back the songs to just piano and that beautiful voice. A few songs do lose their power but others just sound so intimate

Vermilia: Enjoyable one woman folky black metal, especially the second half of the album.
Always too soon, always too late, always in between.
