Well, after yesterday blew me away with Ulver's new album, I decided to make this week Ulver Week. Starting with their first album. Not expecting to enjoy much from these black metal records but I gotta see how they evolve over the years. On this first album - at least the first song - I can hear where Alcest got their inspiration from. I could be wrong but I get strong Souvenirs d'un autre monde vibes here.
If you are going to go through all of Ulver's albums, just a fair warning, you will hate Nattens Madrigal  :corn

I don't expect to enjoy the black metal at all. In fact I got through 2 songs on the first record and decided to move on to the next. I don't imagine I'll find anything to enjoy until they stop playing black metal. I'm just pecking through the early stuff to get a feel for it.

It's only three albums (the second isn't even really black metal to my knowledge as it's all acoustic) so you'll get through them quickly.

Also if you're going through their Spotify there's at least a couple albums that aren't on there (William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Messe I.X-VI.X). You can listen to those on their Bandcamp.

Yeah, I saw it was missing a couple which annoyed me. I do see Ulvsblakk is on this second one and I like that song, and this softer first track. So it's already off to a better start than the first. And yeah it seems to be all acoustic... which is awesome!  :corn

Well I got 40 seconds into Nattens Madrigal before turning it off, so that should tell you everything I think about the first and third records.  :lol Kveldssanger is lovely, though, and I'm on the fourth now. Will do!

finally someone mentioned Eye Of The Beholder (fantastic, I love it, although I'm not a Weckl fan)

I'm on a Heart run right now, so it was

Heart: Heart
Heart: Bad Animals
Heart: Brigade
Heart: Desire Walks On
Haken: The Mountain
Queen: Rock Montreal
Robin Beck: Human Instinct
DT: D/T

Heart: Brigade
Heart: Desire Walks On

What say you about those records?   it's a controversial period for the band, but there are some great songs buried in those records (and they're not identical; Heart and Brigade are sort of of a type, but Bad Animals and Desire Walk On have a little more "experiment" to them.   Bad Animals also has one of my favorite vocal performances by any artist ever.

While researching the UFO Discog Thread, I came across an interview with Ron Nevison where he has some interesting things to say about those 80's albums.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I like them all, I like the songwriting (on some albums more so than on others, but what's good is good innit. Btw, Desire Walks On was made in the same studio as Awake and produced by the same people. Fun fact.) Their vocal melodies (and harmonies) are on point, as ever. These albums are probably less "adventurous" (barring Desire Walks On) than their 70s/ pre-s/t period, but again, I have nothing against them.

It's great metal album Jason. You haven't lost me to the dark side.

For a glimpse of the style but with more of a melodic singer try Control Denied - The Fragile Art of Existence. Playing it now.

How is it?

Easily their best record yet. I have several to go, but this one's my favorite and it's not even close.

EDIT: Now it's Falconer - From A Dying Ember. Awesome.

The Game of Thrones soundtrack for season 2.
Westworld season 2 soundtrack.

Ramin Djawadi is so talented, his soundtrack for GoT and WW are phenomenal. It was great to see the music for GoT played by an orchestra live in concert. Completely worth it.

The piano covers on the WW soundtracks are great renditions.
