NorthTale - Welcome to Paradise
Lord - Fallen Idols
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

The latter was awesome.

Both records sound like they're walking down well-traveled roads already. The Lord album sounds like almost every other generic heavy metal band out there but the sound just works for them (you can have the chops and riffs all you want but if the band doesn't have a unified sound then I'm going to tune out instantly), so they have that going for them, they're playing to their strengths. The NorthTale record I think is also playing comfortably within very familiar territory for most power metal fans but I think it's a solid debut and Bill Hudson didn't oversell it with his comparisons to late 90s/early 2000s power metal. Hoping for some more adventurous material on their next record since Christian is capable of a lot more than he shows on this album. Still has some belters on it though (Bring Down The Mountain, now that's how you start a tune!).

However NorthTale does have a song about hashtags, vegan Happy Meals, and "do you even lift" which I initially cringed at but knowing who Bill/Christian are and the type of vibe they're after with that song, I get it. Still corny, but I get it.

Perhaps the difference in our ears vis-a-vis Northtale is your awareness of the players and history. I have no idea who these guys are you're referencing, so no context by which I'm listening to the album. To me, the album in and of itself was very generic / run-of-he-mill power/speed metal.

Oh, and of course, TASTES!!!

Yeah, a TL,DR of my last post would be that it's definitely run of the mill power metal. If I'm being frank, if this didn't have Bill Hudson - the guitarist, with black hair - involved I probably wouldn't pay much attention to it. Been a fan of his for a long time and I know how long he's wanted to put out something that's 100% his own, so I think that does factor into why I enjoy it more than I would otherwise. But it's not breaking new ground at all, that's for sure. It doesn't help that there's a cock rocker with some horrible lyrics ("eating vegan Happy Meals," "do you even lift?").

I hear ya... sometimes we all give a 'pass' to bands/artists we love historically, but then they put out ordinary music and we listen to it with at least a little bit of bias

Oh god, my dad used to play Brooks and Dunn all the time when I was growing up. My mom and I both hated it.

Thanks for bringing back horrible memories!

Hath, what's the album on the upper right?  That LOOKS like Patrick Swayze a little bit, but...

And even if you don't like the genre, Brooks and Dunn are the real deal.  I watched the Country Music Association "CMA Fest" a couple nights ago, and most of it was quasi-boy band drivel (Can someone teach these kids how to "front" a band?   Every one of them does the same move:  standing at the edge of the stage with their legs together holding the mic like they're Run or DMC, tapping their chest and pointing; they look ridiculous) but Brooks and Dunn came out (with the Brothers Osbourne) and slayed (the only other acts that were close were Luke Combs, and the Luke Combs/Tim McGraw duet).

(No chest tap, but this is the pose I'm talking about; I could post 100 Boys II Men or N'Sync pictures with the same pose.  This is Brett Young, by the way, but at the CMA Fest virtually every act - Thomas Rhett, Chris Jansen, Kane Brown, Rascal Flatts, all did the same move)

Stadler, you have a good eye my friend.  That is indeed the Swayzdog.

It is a tribute album a buddy of mine from California did after Swayze died (he was/is a big Swayze fan).  My buddy goes by the handle "Broiler" and his music is primarily hip hop/rap on the lighter side with funny/tongue-in-cheek lyrics (his latest album is a bit of a mix of acoustic/country/hip hop/rap - sounds weird but it works).

It's a very good one.   I'm  big fan of her singing and playing.  Some of the lyrical content is lost on me, except in the most obvious of ways, but I'm a fan (she was AMAZING live, too).
