Gojira - Magma

My first exposure to Gojira.   Saw these guys a couple of years ago with Opeth and they really rocked.  Would love to see them again.

Duuude I saw them on the Magma tour on a whim. Received free tickets... I had never really listened to them before (except the singles from Magma before deciding to commit to going)... and they BLEW ME AWAY.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

While listening to this in the car this morning, I realized I could sing Jimmy Eats World's The Sweetness over almost all of these songs and the vocal lines would fit perfectly.

Interesting neo-prog.  Good keyboard textures, but the vocalist's range is super limited and it's obvious the drums are electronic.  Mix is thin and sterile.

Alright, I guess it only took like 5 years for this album to grow on me. There are still some tracks that underwhelm me but I can really appreciate the evolution in the band's sound here, and how they experimented with sound textures and atmosphere this time around.
