This is quite the hidden gem! Really cool album. What do you think of the follow-up, No Hope for Humanity (when they changed their name to Maraya)? I actually quite liked that one too...then they pretty much disappeared from the face of the earth (although they recently had a comeback of sorts...?)

yeah they had a great sound.  Brent featured them on his podcast (RIP :'() a while back.  Seems like I've heard a couple songs off the most recent one, but haven't acquired it yet.
Winger would be better!

I've only heard Lifetime In Hell and that was great.

Was reading up on it, and I guess these are recordings from 1991 (plus a couple new songs). So it predates Cycles (which is 1994), even though it was released recently.

You should definitely check out Cycles. There's definitely more than a bit of Queensryche in the guitars, plus some of that cut and dry US power metal, mixed in with a "grungier" (for a lack of better term) mood, especially in certain vocal melodies. Always had a soft spot for that album.

Pharaoh - bad drum sound, mediocre singing, pass.
Timo Tolkki - did he even write these songs? This is so forgettable, even with the good guest vocalist lineup.
Duskmourn - brand new album, awesome melodeath/folky metal surprise, recommended
Hiraes - brand new album and debut record from this band, very good melodeath

DMB: Glad the thread gave me inspiration to go back to these...so, so good.

As for today's releases, Pharaoh and Thy Catafalque, just one listen each, so it's a little early to tell. But...

Pharaoh: agreed on the bad drum sound (unfortunately, that's not unusual for them. But the drumming itself is great!), do not agree on the vocals. Wasn't crazy about Tim Aymar on Control Denied's album, but I really enjoy him in Pharaoh. Liked the album on first listen, looking forward to spinning it again.

Thy Catafalque: this was quite the ride, as usual. I'm a relative newcomer to Tamás Kátai's world, but I've been enjoying the discovery. It's great how he manages to incorporate all of the different sounds and influences and yet sound "catchy" and unpretentious (relatively speaking  ;))

Damn... now that you mention that, I do remember the name and that album.  Was a most excellent listen, and one of the 10 albums from his 2016 podcasts that I saved on Spotify.

I became a fan when Meta came out, and it is still my favourite album. I liked Geometria, but I rarely spin it now. Naiv was better but after one listen Vadak could surpass them all. I'm shocked it hit me as hard as it did, bearing in mind I was really unimpressed by the singles. Can't wait to delve deeper.

Now onto Devy's latest offering. Is it possible for this guy to release anything subpar? I'm 4 songs in and I feel a full run through of his discography coming on  :metal  stellar as always.

For those bumping the new Thy Catafalque record (which includes myself), I want to remind y'all that you can get re-recorded and remixed versions of 7 out of 8 of the songs from their 2004 album Tűnő Idő Tárlat here: https://thycatafalque.bandcamp.com/album/z-por-ep

It's definitely not the project's best album but if you could never get into the original because of the ass production this is definitely a lot better in that department. The versions of Csillagkohó and Neath Waters on here are :metal :metal :metal

Glad to see some love for APOLLO Waterdevils  :metal

And digging the love for new HELLOWEEN, a fine album and that cover art right?

Currently playing;

HELLOWEEN of course...

BLAZE BAYLEY The War Within

Definitely his finest since Silicon Messiah and Tenth Dimension, Witches Night and 18 Flights worth the price alone...

MAGNUM Goodnight LA

Regardless the push for a US market Goodnight retained enough of their pomp and whatnot but tbf this was my introduction to Magnum so bias being what it is of course  ;)

Superb slab of art rock from these guys.  4.5 stars.

The Styx album has been getting most of my attention lately but this new one from Avalon is their best to date.  Big improvement in songwriting here.

First time checking out TesseracT, starting off with One

EDIT: Just finished and I wish I listened to the instrumental version of the album. Good album brought down by lackluster vocals.
