I love The Children of the Night too. Haven't really explored their death metal beginnings yet - The Formulas of Death is supposed to be an excellent album too.

Although Tubular Bells (aka The Exorcist theme) is his most well-known piece, I feel Ommadawn is his magnum opus. It's so gorgeous and full of emotion.

Continuing my Rush discog listen through and I'm at Roll The Bones and the album is really bad. It's funny, I really didn't care for the 80's output but on this listen through I grew to like it more than I remember whereas Roll The Bones is really off-putting.

The MSG is in the Top 10. I've been contemplating a post on it recently because it spent a week and a half in my car.

Whether or not you like the singers on it compared to the two Schenker Fest albums, the Immortal songs are better on the whole.

Where the Gloom Becomes Sound is indeed very good. Time will tell how it'll do against Down Below. For those in the mood for some darker metal, I'd recommend In Solitude's Sister (if you don't know it already). Great record - the previous ones are too. Shame they disbanded, it would have been interesting to see where they were going next. In that vein, I also gave a listen to their guitar player's solo album, from last year (Henrik Palm - Poverty Metal). Interesting mix of sounds (he played on Ghost's Meliora too)

Just dropped the needle on it on Spotify. Musically, it sounds like a Tribulation demo. I guess I wasn't expecting clean vocals. Those are interesting. Kind of gothic, almost alternative.

Yes, their last album is definitely that way - especially a song like Pallid Hands (love that one). The previous efforts - the self-titled debut and The World The Flesh The Devil - have a much stronger HM influence. You can hear PLENTY of Mercyful Fate (esp. the vocals, minus the falsetto) mixed in with early Maiden (the guitars!). If you are curious, listen to the opener (and title track) off The World The Flesh The Devil. Good stuff.

Yeah, I be way more of a Mercyful Fate fan without the falsetto. Kills it.
