Excellent stuff.  Much more gritty than their early stuff, though I loved that stuff just as much.  I'm so looking forward to the new album.  According to Billy's tweets, they've been having a great time recording it.

The new album is set for a US release in February 20011, with a world tour in support of the album.

I know.  Unacceptable.

Also, the new album, "What If..." was produced by Kevin Shirley.

Just watching the Undertow video now, what a great song.  Excellent, melodic rock, and Paul Gilbert's solo is amazing.

Agreed on Paul Gilbert. His Mr.Big stuff is amazing. "Addicted To That Stuff" comes to mind. Stay away from the new Mr.Big cd.

Why is this?  I haven't heard the whole CD yet, as it doesn't come out in the States til February, but I did hear Undertow and I thought it was pretty good.  What's the deal?

Great album.  Funny though, it's not even one of his better solo albums.  Alligator Farm and Burning Organ are all kinds of awesome and probably my two favorites.

In other news, YBS didn't care for the new Mr. Big album much.  I listened to the samples available on iTunes and it sounds like it's going to be awesome, IMO.

The album got a fantastic review at melodicrock.com

I have like 7 albums by him, so I will be getting into him throughout the year hopefully.

I think I heard a song off the new album, my guitarist played it for me and it slayed me.

Awesome.  You'll have to keep me updated and what you're liking/not liking, though I suspect there won't be much of it that you'll NOT like.  ;)

New song was likely this one?

Will try to remember that. ;) I'll put on Burning Organ tonight after class.

The song I heard was instrumental, and focused on guitar. There was a bunch of awesome stuff going on in it as well.

Although that song is freaking awesome. :metal

Awesome.  Among other things, if the solo from "Bliss" doesn't leave you needing to pick your face up off the floor, then you didn't listen to it right.  :lol

I just got my hands on a Paul Gilbert instructional DVD.

My mind has officially been blown out of the crack of my ass; this guy is freaking amazing!!!  I've spent half the night learning Metal Dog... lord I wish I had 24 frets :lol

Just stopping in to show some massive love for this man.  <three.

Awesome!!  Terrifying Guitar Trip is actually one of the only ones I DON'T have yet.  I know in the others, you can see what a nutty sense of humor the guy has, just in the way the videos are produced and stuff he adds in.  I always find myself chuckling watching them.  Glad you're liking it.

Oh yeah, definitely one of the more humorous instructional dvds.  I was watching it, focusing on the guitar playing and then all of a sudden the background started moving; he was sitting in front of a green screen and it was playing a video of someone cooking some purpley-looking shit :rollin.  The next exercise the background was a video of someone deep-frying some wontons! :lol  In terms of instructional dvds it certainly made me laugh harder than Yngwie's retarded take on the blues, or Marty Friedman's constant vegetative state.

Same way in the others.  He's sitting there jamming, then stops to explain it, and in the background, it's going down in alleyway in some Mexican-barrio looking kinda place, but it's all sunny and nice and such.  Too damned funny.

Well, I only have 3.  I have Intense Rock 1 and 2 and the companion instructional DVD for Get Out of My Yard, where he basically shows how to play stuff from the songs.  Intense Rock 1 and 2 were pretty good, so worth a look.

Finally managing to give the new Mr. Big a spin, and I must say, this is an excellent album.  Much more of a harder edge than their earlier stuff from what I've heard, which suits me fine.  Seems to have a nice balance of showmanship between Billy and Paul while keeping true a standard rock and roll formats.

Undertow is my immediate highlight.  That is easily one of their best tunes.  Other good ones are; I WOn't Get in My Way, All the Way Up, Still Ain't Enough for Me, Around the World.  But really all the tunes are really good, not much filler here.

Looking forward to listening more.

Awesome.  I particularly liked Around the World.  Billy was on "That Metal Show" this past Saturday night to discuss the new album.  I DVR'd it, will hopefully watch it tonight.  BONUS:  That episode also has Ace Frehley on it.

So I finally got around to listening to Enemies (In Jail) form Vibrato.  Awesome tune and the video for it is fantastic as well.  His sense of humor, music-wise is one of the things I love most about him.

Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big)
« Reply #69 on: January 09, 2014, 09:47:18 AM »
Paul Gilbert is my second favorite guitar player after John Petrucci and he's at a point in his musical evolution where he resonates with my taste more than ever before: his fusion-oriented 2012 album (Vibrato) is among my favorite albums in recent years. That prompted me to go see him live last year, which turned out to be one of the most memorable and fun concert experiences I've ever had (besides PG's outstanding playing and tone, I must also mention the amazing Thomas Lang who is an absolute powerhouse and a blast to watch). I'm not too fond of Mr. Big, but Racer X and especially his solo albums have many-many gems worth discovering. Interesting to note that he's nearly deaf in one ear and suffering some degree of hearing loss in the other. Oh, and his wife is his keyboard player.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.
