It would be curious to know how fans of different eras view Queen, based on their tastes. Are Queen a prog rock band that in the later part of their carreer went more mainstream? are Queen a pop rock band that in the early days experimented a bit with weird styles?
What do people who list The Prophet's Song and The March of the Black Queen as their favorite Queen songs think of tracks like Another One Bites the Dust and A Kind of Magic, and the other way around?
That's an awesome question. I first got into them with "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions", and I really got bitten by the "Queen" bug with Live Aid (once I started going to shows in earnest - '84, '85 - they had already curtailed their US touring), so they were always a "rock band" comparable to... Def Leppard is probably the closest I can come, but there was always an angle of "odd" with them. They were heavier than many, but not heavy like Sabbath or Van Halen. They were proggier than many, but not prog like Yes or Genesis. I'm a very big Queen fan, but my favorite album - Queen II - I consider an anomaly in the catalogue (there is literally not one other album even close to it in the ouvre). My second favorite - A Kind Of Magic - is more "typical Queen" (I really like all the post-touring Queen) and the rest sort of fit in around them.
