Best of the Worst - your fav of these not-so-classic albums
« on: March 06, 2018, 07:35:36 AM »
So, since I suggested it in another thread and a couple of people seemed to like the idea, let's have a "best of the worst" match.

These are all albums by famous bands that, while may not be actually their worst, are fairly controversial and divided a lot the fan base. Out of these "failures", which one do you like the most?

No Dream Theater because I figured DT's least liked album would still win this. And I leave the option to change the vote in case someone suggests other albums that fit the bill, to update the poll - I've chosen very famous albums 'cause I figured there was no point in making a selection of each random, medium sized band's worst album. These are all albums from huge enough bands that caused enough backslash in the day to make the album infamous.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

This is like picking my favorite hemorrhoid. There is no good choice. Gun to head I guess I pick Risk.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

JUDAS PRIEST - Demolition

Love that album. Jugulator was the definitive worst of the Ripper era, in my opinion.

Had to pick Virtual XI, though I really enjoy them all, except for Dedicated to Chaos and St. Anger.  Lately, I've been listening to Forbidden a lot and just listened to Demolition last week.

Easy vote. Demolition. Virtual XI was second, but by quite a bit.

Dedicated to Chaos is worse than St. Anger. And that's saying a LOT.

Not even close:  Forbidden.  I do not get the hate for that album, even among the band.  "Can't Get Close Enough", "I Won't Cry For You", Rusty Angels", and "Kiss of Death" are as good as anything else in the Martin era.  Is it maligned because of the Ice-T duet in "Illusion of Power"?

The title track is awesome.  I love the main riff!

Ice-T should NEVER be the cause of anything being maligned.  Ever.

My vote goes for Virtual XI. None of the other albums have a classic song on them such as Maiden's The Clansman.

Without that, I would have probably picked Demolition. Some good songs here and there on that record. And I agree that Forbidden, the song, is quite good!

I don't disagree one bit; I'm just trying to understand why that album seems to get singled out for crapness.  True, it doesn't have Geezer (and is following an album that did), but still....

That's probably my close second. I love freaking Tony Martin. Now, c'mon Iommi, re-release his era already.

Virtual XI would've won for me but I can never forgive the extra/unnecessary 5+ minutes in Angel and the Gambler. I made my own custom version of the song that is much better than the horrible choice they made.

Risk, easily.  I haven't heard two of the albums in this poll (JP and Sabbath).  But I don't feel like I need to.  I like Risk quite a bit.  In fact, I rank it at #4 in the Megadeth discography, behind Rust, Symphony, and Youthanasia.  So including Risk doesn't really work in terms of a "best of the worst" type of poll for me.  I put it ahead of a lot of really good albums.

Definitely St. Anger. I am one of the very few who actually find that snare sound pretty cool. Plus, at least the album's concept is consequent.

Virtual XI.

This.

The Priest, Maiden, Megadeth and Metallica are good too IMO.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

I think Virtual XI is a good album.

Also Forbidden isnt THAT bad. It's still my least favorite sabbath album but there's some stuff on there that I enjoy.
Do you read Sutter Cane?

Virtual XI. It’s below average, but it has 2 or 3 good songs.

Well, I've never heard Demolition or Forbidden, so they're out.

Dedicated to Chaos I've listened to once in 2011, on that one website that let you play it before it was released (anyone remember it?). It was utter rubbish, had maybe couple decent songs, but most of it was pretty bad.

St. Anger isn't as bad as people make it. It has some glaring faults (production ofc, some songs go on too long, playing is a sometimes a tad sloppy), but it certainly has some real emotion. I don't mind the lack of guitar solos, their not necessary to metal music IMO (and Kirk has been playing the same solo from year 1992 anyway  :lol). I hardly ever listen to it, but right now I'm having Shoot Me Again on the background and it is a pretty good song.

Virtual XI... well... I used to defend it in the past, but now I think it's a bottom three Iron Maiden album. Now looking back to it, it's pretty devoid of memorable songs. Como Estais Amigos is an exception though, one of their best album closers. The Clansman has its moments, but it drags on a bit too long. And I actually like The Angel and the Gambler and Don't Look in the Eyes of the Stranger, maybe because the overt repetition just becomes funny at some point. :lol

Risk I used to like as a teenager, but haven't paid mind to it in recent years. It's a decent alt-rock record. Insomnia is an absolutely terrible song, but there's some hidden gems in there, like Prince of Darkness, I'll Be There and Wanderlust. I agree with Dave Mustaine when he said that if it wasn't released under name other than Megadeth more people would've liked it.

Risk is also solid.

Risk. Excellent album, just not a great Megadeth album.
The rest are bad.
