THE FAMILY CREST v. The War: Act II (rel 5/20/22)
« on: February 14, 2018, 04:57:50 PM »
For those who don't know this band, and are fans of The Dear Hunter or Chamber/Baroque Pop/Rock/Folk music, they are a very strong suggestion.

They even just opened for The Dear Hunter last Fall, and many TDH fans seem to be going apeshit for them ever since.

So this band from San Francisco released a fantastic album in 2014 titled "Beneath the Brine" which introduced many new fans to them including myself. The opening title track is as good as any song that I've heard this decade. Soaring vocals and string arrangements along with an uplifting crescendo.

After releasing an EP in 2017 titled "Prelude to War" which has many more songs I have enjoyed; the band today released the 1st single and an outrageous video for "Never Gonna Stop"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8aQBTAgzjs

and they include in the notes how the album is titled The War: Act I and will be released on April 6th, 2018.

Loved the last band you recommended under the 'if you like The Dear Hunter then....' guise (Dirt Poor Robins).
So I'm downloading 'Beneath the Brine' now.

soupytwist, that's great to hear!

If you enjoy DPR and The Dear Hunter, The Family Crest makes a lot of sense. The same online friend who suggested  Dirt Poor Robins to me also enjoys The Family Crest.

oh, and another new track is streaming (although I think it may have been awhile ago)

I've only managed to give this a couple of listens and both times other things were happening.  My initial reaction is this isn't as immediately as enjoyable as the Dirt Poor Robins album was (that album demanded my attention, this one I easily got distracted away from) the first track was also a bit of downer for me - not really feeling that one.

That may sound rather negative, but until I get a proper chance to give it my full attention and let it soak in I can't really give a proper reaction.  Also when I get some music time I've got that Dirt Poor Robins album of rotation - I adore that album, probably my fav album of 2017.

I'm really looking forward to this! Beneath The Brine is such a great album  :metal

You guys might like OWEL as well, their last track is definitely their most TDH influenced one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq1maKL374Q

soupy, definitely check out an entire album for both Dirt Poor Robins and TFC.

Beneath the Brine initially was kind of hit and miss, but I gave it another go the other day and remembered why the entire works for me. The 2nd half really has some wonderful tracks "Make Me a Boat" "She Knows My Name" "There's a Thunder" all add a lot to it.

Prelude to War though, I think they are upping the production and some other facets. Maybe being a little more poppy but still not losing the diversity of their sound. A song like "Mirror Love" for example, the sax part in the bridge is something that stands out.

@home will check out that OWEL tune certainly, thanks!

yeah I gave it 1 stream the other night and naturally loved it.

Waiting to check it out at work tomorrow with the preorder download; which is coming at Midnight (or 11PM Central Time in MN I think).

sohhh bloody good! I think it surpasses Beneath the Brine.

Such lush, rich, epic symphonic arrangements.

I keep just thinking, Holy Fuck, Album of the Year?

It's definitely up there with Beneath the Brine. Not sure if it will surpass it or not. I'll need plenty more listens before I can make that call. It's definitely the early front runner for my favorite album of the year, but I haven't heard a ton of new stuff yet.

"A SPECTACULAR RETELLING OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST LOVE STORY.

Shakespeare’s timeless tale is cinematically reimagined using live music performed by The Family Crest.
Hitting the Main Stage of The Den Theatre for a limited three-show engagement, this event is an innovative combination of actors, dancers, and the band. Somewhere between a rock concert and a classic Shakespearean play, the story finds new life through enigmatic staging, engaging choreography, and an emotionally expressive soundtrack. Treated as party guests, the audience is dropped into middle of this sensational epic in an immersive night that feels like a music video come to life.

The evening features favorite hits from The Family Crest, (some of which can be heard heard in their iconic Tiny Desk concert), combined with never-before-heard tracks from their upcoming album, The War Part II, which debuts in 2020. The grandiose, symphonic sounds of these classically trained musicians provides the inspiring soundtrack to the familiar tale and paints the picture like it’s never been seen before.

The Family Crest, The Den Theatre, and the Jacaranda Collective welcome you to an unforgettable experience.

Really enjoyed 'Prelude' and 'War act 1' so hopeful this will be good.   Got to be honest (and going back to my early post in this thread) and say 'Beneath the Brine' never really grew on me much.

The War Act II is out today.

I was impressed with my first listen this morning. First reaction is that I enjoyed it more than Act I. But it'll take more time to let it all sink in.

yeah I'm enjoying it a lot, although unfortunately I may always be stigmatized by listening to it per my cat died on Friday and I may always associate the loss of my cat with this album.

But nearly every track has something great about it. Especially the catchy/thematic ones like "Pride" "Hearts on Fire" "The Garden" "Her Song."

This album almost feels like a blend of their last 3 releases in 1 (Beneath the Brine and the 2 previous "The War" releases).

Also "Baby, You've Got Your Legs" has a very similar motif about 1:44 in to the slow section in The Dear Hunter's "The Lake and the River." I doubt The Family Crest band members realized that though.

Oh man sorry to hear that.

As for the album - spun it twice so far, maybe a tad underwhelmed so far.  It's fine, but seems to be lacking the musical drama of the previous album, it's all a bit easy listening and a lot of the songs blend into one another.
