DIRT POOR ROBINS - v. Firebird (2/29/2024)
« on: February 06, 2018, 10:00:59 PM »
As a huge fan of The Dear Hunter, I hear a lot of artists/bands who are compared or compare to them, but only a small percentage of them i ever get into.

But I can honestly say this band has highly impressed me, and having only heard their new album which came out back in August 2017.

I am so blown away by it/them, just in hearing their new record, i wonder if I may have found a new favorite band.

"The Raven Locks Act 3."

The vocal arrangements, string and other chamber/baroque parts. Dynamics, the concept without being cheesy or melodramatic (songs that tell a story, vs dialogue that becomes way too theatrical).

I wonder if anyone knows them around here, per they are not a new band. Their latest record is their 5th album, lol, and their debut album was released in 2007, the same year as TDH's Act II, lol.

https://dirtpoorrobins.bandcamp.com/album/the-raven-locks-act-3

If you enjoy TDH or a band like The Family Crest (or Hotel of the Laughing Tree among other prog bands using Chamber and Orchestral instruments), this band could right up your alley.

This sounds right up my street.  I'm going to download Act 3 now, was toying with starting with Act 1 - but as Act 3 was released in 2017 if it's really good I can pick a song for Bolsters roulette

Anyway about to start playing it now, will report back later  :metal

Oh God the second song was awesome, got a Beatles vibe from it.
If the quality continues (and the 3rd song is sounding great as I type this) it could be my fav album of 2017....
OK no more posting till I've finished it all up..

Yeah, those couple songs I just checked out from their latest album were amazing. Gonna be all over this after my roulette! Thanks Soundscape, you never fail to deliver great music that no one has heard of

It doesn't quite......But it's still a very enjoyable album - It's more theatrical/showtune in style the The Dear Hunter.  It actually reminds me of 'April Smith and the Great Picture Show' album 'Songs from a Sinking Ship' from 2010 who sadly haven't released anything since.   I also got a hints of The Decemberists and The Beatles in places.

Will happily check out their back catalogue.   Thanks for this great find.

yeah they aren't a The Dear Hunter clone, but the appeal to fans makes a huge amount of sense.

I'm checking Act 1 out right now, omg..I am in fucking love!

Where has this band been all my life?! Listened to the first couple of tunes from the latest album this morning and just listened to Raven Locks Act 1. So damn good, thank you Soundscape!

same here, you're welcome

I am pretty baffled as to how this band fell under the cracks for all these years??? And apparently never broke up or anything.

I want to hear the Pre-Acts albums now having digested all 3 Acts today pretty well.

But man, there are so many great tunes on each album. I guess there are a few humor or odd tunes and the only other thing I suppose is the fact thee 1st 2 Acts are somewhat short being 30-40 mins, but Act 3 is at least a bit longer in around 50 some odd minutes.

Listen to Act 3 a few times. Liking it, but not loving it yet. The Dear Hunter references are pretty obvious at times, but overall it's not too similar,.

I am finding that every record has highlights, but Act 3 seems to be the most polished.

But I'm loving this band still per I just posted a long thing about their whole catalog in my blog

Release date coming soon for our new record Dead Horse.

The first release is ready and waiting for you!

We are using a new distributor and it’s been a little tricky getting all of the in a row for a release date.

Good news though...

Our first installment will be 4 songs instead of 2 and out in around a a month’s time. We decided to do 3 EPs instead of 2 songs a month. It felt weird only giving out two songs at a time and we figured you would want a little more to sink your into.

Stay tuned !!!!

The EP is amazing (Skywriter - wow).  They really found themselves on Ravens Act 3 and this is a continuation.

So is this an taster for a future album then?

Thanks again to SoundscapeMN to introducing to this band and The Family Crest - any other bands in this ilk you'd recommend?

the deal with this is, 2 more EPs are being released soon in the Dead Horse, Alaska series.

Also a Graphic Novel may come eventually for The Raven Locks.

After that, Neil and Kate have more stuff they have mentioned, but I'm not sure when that may come, but likely not til 2020. There may be a full length within the Dead Horse story at some point.

As for other bands? maybe my best suggestion would be checkout this epic blog entry I wrote last year that is a long list of bands recommended if you like The Dear Hunter

Thanks that's a great list.  Some bands I already love are on list (Mew are one of my very fav acts).   Couple of others I've tried but weren't my thing.  But loads of other stuff I've never heard of so plenty to check out.

If I could return the favour.  Couple of bands that fit more in the chamber pop sound I guess and sadly both are no longer with us.

First 'The Miserable Rich'.   A UK band who have a couple of album and zero success!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SQLVWGJFcI

Next Katzenjammer.  4 Girls from Norway who just play fun pop music playing 30 odd instruments between them (genuinely one of the greatest live acts I've seen).   Their first two albums are great fun, sadly their third was a bit of a dud and they split.

oh nice, I'm digging that The Miserable Rich tune! .. a little like Revere with more chamber and piano.

I'll have to spend some time with both of those bands and follow-up. Thanks again!

And I know all too well about bands who were great but broke up. The music is still available to hear (if found).

From Facebook:

In case you missed it...

I’ve been doing the original music for a True Crime podcast called “Culpable”. It’s been a blast mainly because the content is so riveting. I recommend checking it out sometime soon if you haven’t already.

In the meanwhile...

I just uploaded the theme song to our YouTube channel. Take a gander

I’m not sure I have ever approached recording with as much discipline and emotion as I have this year. I can’t wait to share this with you next month.

Another 4 track EP I presume?

If they can match (or even better) the quality of the first EP this will be outstanding.

yeah from what Neil said a few months back, instead of releasing 1-song per month, release 3 4-song EP's, so yeah 4 tracks.

btw, I can say I like Katzenjammer more than The Miserable Rich (although I like that song from them). But I'm still checking both of them out.

Yeah GOLD I think I may like even more than RED, lol.

The climax in The Saints I is breathtaking. A little like Solemn Dream I suppose.

they did another live stream Q&A last week on Facebook and among the information given, Dead Horse, Alaska is going to be released as-a-whole next year in physical form.

Listening to their pre-Acts album 'Leviathan' and it is really really good. Definitely a big step up from their debut.
