Silly game: what if an actor is the same character everywhere?
« on: January 09, 2018, 02:33:54 AM »
Let's see if I had a stupid idea, or if this could turn into a somehow fun game. The idea came to me watching Mr. Robot; the guy that previously portrayed the president of the United States in House of Cards stars as the CEO of a security company. He's got a beard, unlike his clean look as a president, and I thought it was belieavable that an ex president of the USA would reinvent himself as CEO of a small company, and become more casual in his look and appeareance.

There is also the fan theory that the Stan Lee cameos in the Marvel movies are all about the same character (I'm sure there's a site somewhere going into detail about this), and there are many memes about the funny premise that an actor's character is being used in another context - for example I always loved the Theoden meme "Where was Gondor when the Titanic sank", since the guy playing Theoden in Lord of the Rings played the captain of the Titanic.

Based on this wacky idea that an actor is really the same person in every movie he/she stars in, can you come up with funny examples of this? Mine about "Former president of the US is now CEO of a security company" served as an example but isn't funny, can you do way better?

Yeah, this reminds me of another meme, that showed Boromir dying full of arrows, him thinking "This is what I get to try to steal the ring from Frodo, in my next life I will be a fair and just man" and then the next image is Ned Stark about to be behaded going "Well, damn"  ;D

Something like that, it would be funny to trace a semi-coherent history for an actor, pretending he's the same person in every movie, of course if the character doesn't die makes things easier...

That is why Paul Reiser is CLEARLY trying to harness the mind flayer and potentially weaponize it for Weyland-Yutani, while trying to ingratiate himself with Hopper and Joyce so they will not see the truth.

Pretty sure this guy plays the exact same character in every role he's ever been in. Also, I can think of at least 4 roles where his name was Hector.

Can someone do this with Eddie Murphy? Just make him Prof. Klump in everything.

Side comment: Years ago in a non-sober state my then-girlfriend and I thought of a remake of Titanic in which Eddie Murphy played every single person on the ship. Still want to see that.

I'm just picturing Eddie Murphy being naked on a couch, being drawn by himself.  :lol

Well, he sort of did that in Coming To America, where he played about a dozen characters.  And that became somewhat of a trademark that he would do in lots of subsequent films as well, but I think that was the first time he had done it.

In Little Miss Sunshine, we see Hank Schrader during his days as a patrol cop, stopping  cars on the road, before he would move on to the DEA in Albuquerque, while his brother in law Walter White, before resorting to teaching, was a businessman who was helping people getting into the editorial world.

Okay, I think I get the premise now. I tried this with Seth Rogen.

Dale Denton is a lovable, carefree, pot smoking 20-something guy (Pineapple Express). While on the run from the cops in that film, Dale, in a marijuana-fueled dream, imagines himself as Frank, your average packaged hot dog wiener at the local grocery store (Sausage Party). After waking up and narrowly escaping death at the hands of Ted Jones, his crew, and the Asians, Dale eventually moves to a new city where he forges a new identity for himself but struggles to pay the bills, and under his new alias attempts to make a porno to sell to pay the bills (Zack and Miri Make A Porno).

A few years go by and Dale Denton (now Zack Michaels) is once again single, and moves out to California, where he has cleaned up his life and become a police officer - or so it seems. He takes a high school kid out on the town (Superbad), and when his superiors find out, he is fired. Zack, unable to bear the shame, once again changes his name to Mac Radner.

Mac finally settles down and marries a nice woman and has a kid out in California (Neighbors). However, Mac (Zack (Dale)) gets comfortable and eventually relapses into a destructive pot smoking habit. After a few years he is divorced, changes his name a fourth time to Seth Rogen (thus complicating his life even further, but due to constantly being high, he simply does not give a $&*#) and becomes single. With all of the film revenue he has somehow been making, he once again lives alone, smokes a lot of pot, and eventually dies in the apocalypse and gets to heaven to dance with N*Sync (This Is The End).

This is awesome! and yes, it was precisely what I was suggesting.

Will sleep over Johnny Depp's arc  :lol but isn't he since 10 years or so a quirky and goofy bumbling (but occasionally clever) oddball anyway?

Ted Neodore Logan.

Loveably teenage goofball decides to create a band with his mate, ends up on time travelling adventures and visits heaven and hell.  This causes him to straigten up his act, and he joins the Police force - two early cases involve infiltrating a surfer gang who rob banks, and stopping a bus from exploding.  These two cases take to much out of him so he finds his old time machine and goes back in time - to stop Dracula, however he fails to settle due to struggling with the accent....So he goes in the future instead, only to find mankind enslaved in a computer program, also while here he goes to a really shit rave and learns Kong Fu.    All these experience make him one tough dude, not to be messed with - but he just wants to settle down..........................then someone kills his dog.

You should pretend that an actor is not portraying different characters, but he / she is really the same person in every show or movie he's in, and therefore try to make sense of the change of style and story.  For example look at the medley picture of Johnny Depp characters - you should not think about Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka etc, but you should pretend it's really the same, specific person everywhere and try to make sense (example) of how a pirate ended up running a chocolate factory.

Tom Hanks: It took many years, but he eventually overcame his slow speech problems and educated himself enough to become, in fact, a 'smart man' - Forrest Gump makes it! He ends up becoming a pilot for FedEx, but goes on another adventure being stuck on an island (Castaway). After making it back home, he pursues his newfound love for the sea and becomes a ship captain, only to be overthrown by a new captain (Captain Philips) during a short crisis. Years later he once again returns to his love of flying, landing a plane in the Hudson River (Sully). He also has recurring dreams throughout his life, stemming from his childhood obsession with cowboys. Every time he sees the same people, but it's a new adventure each time (Toy Story 1, 2, 3, 4).

This is so silly and fun.  :lol

After having seen Darkest Hour, I've come up with another one: Dracula survives his late 1800 adventure in London, goes into hiding, and works his way in the political scene of England, managing to be appointed Prime Minister in 1940 and refusing to sue for peace in threat of imminent defeat. That sneaky vampire.

Wooow this is a great thread, and something I've come up with (not as a thread, but to facilitate my love for Hugh Laurie).

Spoilers for the end of House, M.D. ahead:

So, at the end of House, Greg goes off to live a life of fulfillment with his best friend Wilson as he's dying of cancer. Before that, he faked his death, cast aside his entire life of being a known M.D. and the rest of his former life. Fast forward a few years in real life (which works for what I'm about to propose) and Hugh Laurie does a fantastic new show called Chance. He's older, has almost the exact same mannerisms, propensity for self destruction, is interested in humanity but seems to disdain much of it, and to top it all off, he is still doing a (great) American accent and is also a doctor of a different kind (a specialized psychiatrist that refers patients to other specific doctors get full-time care after they've been referred to him because of lack of a standard of care). He's changed his name, he's older and more hardened in certain ways but more open in others (it'd make sense that after having Wilson die, House, now Eldon Chance, become softer having felt that loss). Literally the only thing that doesn't fit is his limp and bad leg, but I can write that off given how perfect everything else works out. I can suppose my own little theory that the medical field found a way to fix his leg so that he can have the full use of it again.  :P

It's so fucking perfect, I don't think there's any other situation that I've seen with an actor and a series lining up with another so well that it literally could be an actual story line.  :lol I've rewatched the end of House and started over Chance a few times just because of it and it's a fantastic little game that in this case, has almost no holes in the "theory". I'd be very surprised if Laurie himself didn't read the script and went, "Wow, this character is House after House, M.D. ends".  :lol

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.
