ok, so I went a little crazy with this . . .

I went ahead and ranked the albums 1 to 30 and handed out points per my usual (30 points for 1st, etc) and came up with this:

Opeth - 175
Dream Theater - 169
Porcupine Tree - 121

I also ranked each group of three albums based on that scoring system and came up with this:

1 - Stupid Dream / Blackwater Park / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (65 pts)
2 - Deadwing / Ghost Reveries / Systematic Chaos (62 pts)
3 - In Absentia / Damnation / Octavarium (58 pts)
4 - Signify / Still Life / Scenes From A Memory (54 pts)
5 - Lightbulb Sun / Deliverance / Train Of Thought (50 pts)
6 - Fear Of A Blank Planet / Watershed / Black Clouds & Silver Linings (47 pts)
7 - On The Sunday Of Life / Orchid / Images And Words (36 pts)
7 - Up The Downstair / Morningrise / Awake (36 pts)
9 - The Incident / Heritage / A Dramatic Turn Of Events (31 pts)
10 - The Sky Moves Sideways / My Arms Your Hearse / Falling Into Infinity (26 pts)
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

Not what I voted for when the thread was made, but here are my votes right now (since I'm more familiar with Porcupine Tree's discography than I was back then)

On The Sunday Of Life / Orchid / Images And Words

The Sky Moves Sideways / My Arms Your Hearse / Falling Into Infinity
Signify / Still Life / Scenes From A Memory
Stupid Dream / Blackwater Park / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Lightbulb Sun / Deliverance / Train Of Thought
In Absentia / Damnation / Octavarium
Deadwing / Ghost Reveries / Systematic Chaos
Fear Of A Blank Planet / Watershed / Black Clouds & Silver Linings
The Incident / Heritage / A Dramatic Turn Of Events

1 - 6 were really simple to pick. Lightbulb is such a knockout. I love Deliverance but it doesn't stand a chance for me when placed next to Lightbulb Sun.
7, 8, and 9 were all tough between PT and Opeth.

The Incident won because the other two are just not good. Heritage is my least favorite Opeth record and DT's is probably tied for my least favorite.

On The Sunday Of Life / Orchid / Images And Words

Haven't listened to the other two yet oops.

Up The Downstair / Morningrise / Awake

Again, victory by default.

The Sky Moves Sideways / My Arms Your Hearse / Falling Into Infinity

I really should listen to Porcupine Tree's first albums.

Signify / Still Life / Scenes From A Memory

Not hard at all, even though Still Life is really good.

Stupid Dream / Blackwater Park / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Okay, now this one was hard. SDoIT and BP are both 5* albums for me. BP wins by a hair I guess. Edit: Except I accidentally voted for SDoIT so nevermind

Lightbulb Sun / Deliverance / Train Of Thought

Train of Thot > Deliverance > Lightbulb Sun

In Absentia / Damnation / Octavarium

Octavarium > In Absentia > Damnation. Wasn't hard at all, Octavarium's just that good.

Deadwing / Ghost Reveries / Systematic Chaos

Picking between Deadwing and Ghost Reveries was hard. Ghost Reveries > Deadwing > Systematic Chaos

Fear Of A Blank Planet / Watershed / Black Clouds & Silver Linings

This one wasn't hard at all. FoaBP > Watershed > BC&SL

The Inicident / Heritage / A Dramatic Turn Of Events

I like all three, but ADToE is so much better than the other two. ADToE > The Incident > Heritage

All DT, Opeth runner up. I can add that I bought all of PT's albums, listened carefully to them and never understood the fuss. They are now dust collectors.

I really hate that deadwing (best PT album) was up against ghost reveries (genuine masterpiece)
It's probably Six Roaming Owls or some other obscure band I've never heard of.

I don't know any Opeth but I picked Stupid Dream and SFAM.  I've always thought that DT was better than PT at heavy and prog songs but PT does ballads, lighter songs and spatial songs much better.  PT tries to be heavy but to me comes up a bit mild.  Except for Futile, which is at a DT level of awesome.

The poll was a cool idea for this forum because a lot of us are fans of all 3 bands. They all happen to be in my top 10 favorite bands of all time and I actually discovered PT through this forum. I then introduced my mom to PT and Steven Wilson, and Steven is now one of her favorite artists of all time. So yeah, I am very grateful for discovering this forum  :lol I also liked the original poster in general, it's a shame he doesn't post here any more.
